CS:GO continues to smash records as its final Major draws near

An astronomical concurrent player peak as well as average players peak has been set with just two days to go before the BLAST.tv Paris Major begins.

Throughout 2023, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has kept making headlines as it continues to surpass player records time and time again.

Before this year, the previous peak of concurrent players was set just after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in April 2020, when just over 1.3 million players were in the game at the same time. In February 2023, a new record was set of over 1.35 million concurrent players, and that number has continued to rise.

The concurrent players peak is now at over 1.8 million (Picture courtesy of Steamcharts.com)

In March, CS:GO reached the 1.5 million mark for the first time, and in April it also broke the average players record from three years ago, surpassing the 900,000 threshold.

On May 6, as the final Major in Global Offensive draws near in Paris and we grow ever closer to summer's release of Counter-Strike 2, a new astronomical high has been set. That now sits at 1,802,853 peak concurrent players according to Steamcharts — up nearly a whopping 300,000 from the previous March record. A new average players record has also been set at 934,359 over the past 30 days.

Despite the game continuing to break records this year, the 2 million mark of concurrent players seemed too far out of reach — until today. Could the nearly 11-year-old game get there before its successor comes?

I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in these numbers. Bots, traders, scammers etc. Numbers literally controlled by Valve that we believe to be true. CS definitely not “dead game” though.

But they haven't have they? The player count in Dota is declining for some time. Just to claim that these are all bots is a lazy argument. Anyway, I don't care about these numbers that much especially since CS2 is on the horizon. But it probably does bode well for the CS2 release.

That's super stupid, if you don't want to stay focused and try hard, there are plenty of other things to do in cs other than mm. You can also play other games to chill as well, competitive modes in games exist as a place where people try their best, I thought it's obvious

Asia is a small market in CSGO... Majority of it's playerbase would be Europe (EU/CIS). Valorant either just released or is releasing in China: valo2asia.com/tencent-to-launch-valorant.. CSGO isnt a casual game so, judging by it's competitive scene is just a logical approach. And I believe China is getting it's own franchise league so.

Asia, excluding China is not a small market at all lol its the same size at the entire America's continent in terms of player base with china its not far behind Europe. Also CSGO in China has an insane Casual playerbase I don't think you understand how big the casual scene is there. Stats for CSGO servers: web.archive.org/web/20211117201724/https..

NA market dead though and the website stopped showcasing information back in 2021. We have no idea what’s going on just have to look at the scene. CSGO is simply not a casual game and we don’t know how much damage Riot/Tencent has done in terms of gaining market share in China. Valorant we see a very very healthy Asian scene. CSGO not at all… They’re basically tier 3 in comparison to major teams. But look, if you think Asia is a healthy scene that’s fine lol. From my observations CSGO is pretty much Europe. Majors proved that for me.

Record after record after record with Valolrant, the "csgo killer/competitor" is out, isnt funny ? lol!! You cant beat the original you fakes. Love it , lets go CS. And all that before even CS2 is out. Just imagine the first major on CS2 !!!

Well, actually valorant destroys CS in terms of viewership, if you take all streaming into account (not only tournaments). Besides, Valorant has a large, global and younger player base. Regarding professional play, all regions compete whereas only Europe (including CIS) are really present on CS. The number of orgs on VLR also grows, because there's more viewership and it costs less to enter for now. None of the games is disappearing anytime soon. But while CS will likely still grow, valorant sure is a safer bet for investors.
