Future of CSPPA unknown after website goes offline; board members depart

Silence from the association and the departure of multiple high-profile members leaves its future uncertain.

The status of the Counter-Strike Professional Players' Association is up in the air after a period of prolonged silence from the organization, with Zvonimir "Professeur" Burazin recently pointing out that the CSPPA website is offline and that their URL now fails to resolve. The website outage, combined with a handful of high-profile departures that were confirmed by Dust2.us and HLTV, leads to many questions surrounding the association's future and its impact going into CS2.

HLTV and Dust2.us contacted a number of current and former CSPPA members, with many of those we reached out to uncertain on the status of the association as a whole. We also learned several key members have departed the CSPPA, with many leaving in silence despite being part of the board.

We confirmed that Johnny "JT" Theodosiou, Maikil "Golden" Selim, and Martin "STYKO" Styk are no longer a part of the board and left at varying timelines, with the first pair only confirming their departures while STYKO shared that he chose to leave due a combination of a busy schedule and feeling like little was being accomplished by the CSPPA.

"I felt like not much was being done," the Slovakian rifler explained to Dust2.us. "People in charge were barely communicating with us, meetings became irregular... I felt like I was not contributing via CSPPA to the well-being of the scene and therefore I felt like I don't want to associate myself with the project, for now."

STYKO was a particularly active member of the CSPPA board, at times helping to rally the association at crucial moments (for example, when Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov's smoke bug caught teams off guard at PGL Major Antwerp). His departure, alongside that of two other members of the board, leaves the CSPPA with a rump board consisting of inactive pro Chris "chrisJ" de Jong, Max "MiGHTYMAX" Heath, and Dan "apEX" Madesclaire. However, when contacted by HLTV, apEX stated that he had "no clue" about the CSPPA's current activities and would also depart the board soon.

MiGHTYMAX confirmed he remained a part of the board and indicated that there were conversations earlier in the year about "re-launching" the CSPPA after its previous COO, Michael Døi, stepped down. Dust2.us confirmed that Døi departed the CSPPA sometime early in 2023, aligning with the association's most recent tweet in September 2022 which was a job posting for the role of COO. MiGHTYMAX also stated that chrisJ took over as an interim manager during the search and that they "found a guy from Canada" to replace Døi, but that his addition was never announced. HLTV learned the identity of this individual but they did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Mads Øland, the previous CEO of the CSPPA, transitioned to an advisory role in 2021. However, HLTV and Dust2.us were unable to verify whether he remains active in that role or in any capacity for the CSPPA.

Right now all the power in the pro scene is wielded by brainless bankrupt orgs and greedy + negligent tournament organizers that do not care about fairness or quality of play. Everything is set up to benefit these groups almost exclusively. The players could negotiate right now for 500000% more favorable conditions, especially with Valve pushing for changes and a new game coming out

I unironically just hope valve takes complete control of the pro scene with an iron fist They expressed interest in everything anyone who likes eSports wants: a just and fair system, with as much money flowing as possible, with more than it's fair share to pros, they want an open calendar with actual deserving teams competing in it, a deep and thriving scene with high quality prestigious tier1 tournaments. They've done all of that in dota2 already, just do it in CS. Their hands off approach led to the disastrous state of the scene in recent years, with literally only scum taking the reigns. Time to burn it down.

Does valve big dick the dota scene? I don’t know much about it but seems like a corp as big as them could make CS much better in terms of tournament schedule and player care.

Dota2 has 3 or 5 majors ( I can't remember, haven't watched in ages ), bunch of minors (I think they changed that to regional leagues couple years back) and the international every year They upfront the prize money for the international instead of hiding it in sticker cuts to the teams, and sell skins instead of shit stickers. So huge prize pools which creates all the hype You can run the gauntlet from the dirt and qualify all the way to win the international, kinda like you would in a csgo major, but the cycle takes longer and it's not as easy Basically they would make the circuit way cooler and only the Saudis would be losing. They are anti riot games as it gets (they run a shit circuit imo, franchised which even makes it worse)

Damn that’s crazy, I knew CS was the Wild West in terms of valve involvement up until the gambling scandals and thereafter but it’s really disappointing to see them pump dota real hard while doing virtually nothing for CS.

I disagree about Dota, honestly, I think it is one of the worst systems there is for eSports. And is because of amount of money in the International. If you don't get so needed points in the first season of regional league of the year it could lead to changes or even disband. Same even if you were 1 step away from qualifying to it. And if there are any other tournaments - they just don't matter to anyone, nobody really cares, be it players or orgs. It's like if there was a big online RMR with one team playing only one match in a week and also no Cologne, for example. There can't be any breakout teams, because there's no open qualifiers, you have to go through division 2, which gives no point, and if you make it to division 1, you have to almost win and do very good at the major to have a chance that year and not next.

Shit wasn't like this back when I watched, it was feasible to qualify and everyone still cared about majors a lot (at least I got that impression) Sad to hear and concerning for csgo

But majors are part of International circuit and give points, so they are important, but only because they give points to qualify you to the International. But if you decide to make a tourney and invite even top teams they at best will consider it a practice that they will get paid for in prize money.
