G2 triumph over ENCE to take IEM Cologne trophy

Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov and Nikola "NiKo" Kovač combined to carry G2 to a historic victory.

G2 outclassed ENCE individually throughout the series

G2 have secured what might be the final big trophy of CS:GO history, besting ENCE 3-1 to take the IEM Cologne title. The European squad secured victories on Nuke (16-4), Mirage (16-10) and Ancient (16-9), losing the third map of Anubis (13-16).

G2 were comfortably the better side throughout the series, only really suffering in the early stages of Anubis. ENCE showed their prowess at points, even often making G2 sweat with half or force-buys, but ultimately they seemed unable to handle the pressure.

NiKo secured the IEM Cologne trophy for the first time in his career, and he commented in a post-match interview that it helped to soften the blow of never winning a CS:GO Major. He also spoke about the importance of m0NESY in helping G2 to victory, especially in the final map, and stated that the young AWPer was "just getting started."

The consensus prior to the match seemed to be that ENCE had the advantage in the veto, but they squandered that by losing Nuke badly. It was a map that ENCE had previously been on a 10-game winning streak on before losing it in the semis, but they were easily battered by G2 and were immediately on the back foot in the series.

It was a closer contest on Mirage, with ENCE narrowly squeaking an 8-7 half victory on their CT side, but in large part that was due to a pistol victory that allowed them to start 4-0. When the sides swapped m0NESY came alive and ensured that G2 would take a 2-0 lead in the series.

ENCE seemed to recover when Anubis came around, with the Marco "Snappi" Pfeiffer-led squad far more assertive and aggressive as they started on the T side. Snappi himself was carrying in the fragging department too, particularly in the first half. G2 were also, to some extent, the architects of their own downfall, constantly losing man-up scenarios and squandering advantages.

When G2 got on the T side they started to work their way back into things, with Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač providing an amazing clutch, but the deficit was too much and they slipped to defeat.

G2 retook control of the series on Ancient, running out to a stonking 8-2 lead with a blistering T side display. ENCE managed to grab a handful of rounds at the end of the half to give themselves hope for the second period, but apart from a three-round streak after a pistol win, they didn’t manage to get much done. m0NESY again was vital, as were a couple of clutch contributions from Justin "jks" Savage, and G2 secured a comfortable 16-9 win to take the Cologne trophy.

Its not like you are boomer but f0rest & gtr, s1mple & elec, olof & krimz, cold & fallen there were so many deadly duos that won a lot od things and both were contending for being top in the world and so far I dont think NiKo & m0nesy is duo as deadly as other

But in those different times they all had same conditions for practice etc. I dont really like it how people try to discredit lets say NiP era because in those days every team was weak but NiP werent sent from future and didnt now new tactics etc I dont want to say you wanted to discredit someone just wanted to point how I see it

Amazing event, G2 played great as a team and individually, the two especially played out of their mind. Thanks to G2 for not touching the team, good decision well done. This was maybe the best (CS) event I ever watched, keep it up! Also I wanna add that these 2 Championship level events wins make G2 for me easily the best team of the year so far!

Ence look really good, I can't wait to see what happens at Pro League now. I'm also happy for niko, no majors but at least he now has a kato, cologne, and blast world finals in his trophy cabinet. It's about time they had a competent IGL. They wouldn't have won these 3 tournaments with Aleksib or Nexa.

Exactly my thoughts! Hooxi knows how to get the best out of everyone. I think that haven't been the case with Aleksib and nexa, as much I respect them.

True for aleksib but even without JKS the roster he had was good enough to win trophies. As for nexa he has KennyS instead of monesy, fresh off of winning 3 tournament MVPs in 2017. Sure the team they have now is the best since 2017, but with hunter niko and KennyS, you should still be winning tournaments regardless. Instead Kenny's turned into the equivalent of acor under dexter and got his confidence shattered so bad he couldn't even cut it on tier 2 Falcons lineup. Nexa mismanaged what he had sadly, close to what dexter did in mouz, he couldn't put his players in the right positions and made them all play sub-par. I think nexa is a better IGL now than he was on G2, but even if he were to return today, I don't think he would win. He hasn't won a single meaningful tournament since 2018, and the one he did win, was a small tier 1 tournament compared to what G2 is win ing with hooxi at the helm. Hooxi makes them work. Cphf went top 8 in the major not because everyone was cracked, but because hooxi knew how to utilize every piece he had to it's fullest potential, and he's doing the same with G2. Currently, aleksib and nexa would not be winning trophies with this G2 roster. Neither know how to manage their players to their fullest potential like hooxi can.

Great showing, I only expected a bit more from Hunter. But the rest really delivered from G2 side. Hooxi played well, congratulations to them all. Unfortunately for ENCE but they seemed less energetic then against Vitality. It’s hard to play a BO5 when you are the underdog.

A great show, a great tournament and the most unbelievable era on E_Sports for this game! A good word must be left for Denmark and the contribution they had within the game: On the last 8 teams, 14 players were danish (35%) and 5 out of those 8 teams also had a danish IGL (or co-IGL). Thank you for the amazing run and for the level you brought to this game!
