Complexity ease past G2 into IEM Sydney final

The European combine went from not dropping a map in the group stage to losing two straight against Complexity.

Complexity punched their ticket to the IEM Sydney grand final with a commanding 2-0 victory over G2. The North American-majority squad came out on top in a rematch against the European giants on the same maps they had lost in the group stage, Anubis and Ancient. Vertigo, the decider, was avoided on both occasions.

Complexity were downed with a double 7-13 scoreline the first time around, but the story was very different in the semi-final bout on stage.

A 13-8 victory on Anubis stood on the shoulders of a strong CT performance by Complexity, who made the most of seeking initiative and playing high-pressure defensive setups.

G2’s Ilya "⁠m0NESY⁠" Osipov and Nemanja "⁠huNter-⁠" Kovač put up a fight, with 7 multi-kill rounds each to their name, but the rest of the team combined didn’t manage to get a single one.

Ricky "⁠floppy⁠" Kemery, who has been on a tear ever since losing to G2 in the group stage, showed his prowess with an ace and crucial multi-kill rounds, while Johnny "⁠JT⁠" Theodosiou had back-to-back triples that sealed the deal in his team’s favor.

Ancient was G2’s chance at redemption after blundering Anubis, but the European squad was nowhere to be found. Pressure from Complexity's defense around the map once again asphyxiated Rasmus "⁠HooXi⁠" Nielsen and his men from the gates, and before long it was Tiaan "⁠T.c⁠" Coertzen’s men who were far ahead sporting an 8-1 lead.

floppy personified Complexity's bravado in the last round of the half when he pushed through a molotov in a 1vs1 to catch m0NESY off-guard while trying to plant, and after that Complexity hit double digits in the second pistol round, dealing a death blow to G2. Four rounds later the map was over, 13-3, drawing the curtain on the series.

"We didn't really expect them [G2] to want to put a lot of pressure on Cave, and we know that Mid is pretty hard for us to take right now, so I wanted to put a lot of pressure on them B to start off," Jonathan "⁠EliGE⁠" Jablonowski commented about Complexity’s game plan in a post-match interview on the broadcast.

"We watched how they played against ENCE, and it was very difficult for them to play the round if they didn't have Hall control in the beginning. I wanted to start the game by shutting that down."

Complexity are now comfortably awaiting the grand final, which will be played on Sunday at 09:30 . All they need now is a rival from the other semifinal series pitting MOUZ and FaZe.

Kamil "⁠siuhy⁠" Szkaradek and his company are yet to play in front of the crowd at the Aware Super Theater, as they earned their semifinal berth in the group stage, whereas FaZe have been knocking teams out of the tournament left and right, first in the group stage lower bracket and then in the quarterfinals.
