Ninjas in Pyjamas have announced that Hampus "⁠hampus⁠" Poser has been moved to the bench and Patrick "⁠es3tag⁠" Hansen, who played on the team in 2022 before being removed from the active lineup, will be replacing him in the starting five.

The news follows assertions made by new General Manager Björn "⁠THREAT⁠" Pers upon taking up his role that leadership was an issue for the squad, and that he would "be looking into making some changes to the team."

Ninjas in Pyjamas have struggled to find world-class form ever since Nicolai "⁠device⁠" Reedtz stepped down from the roster late in 2021. They sat second in the world rankings at the time, having just won their first trophy since 2017, IEM Fall.

The Swedish organization has chopped and changed its roster multiple times since then without much success, bar a brief purple patch during which they hit fourth place in the world ranking in mid-2022.

The in-game leadership role has been a problem for the team throughout, with Aleksi "⁠Aleksib⁠" Virolainen taking on the role from late 2022 to mid-2023 without much success, and hampus serving in the capacity otherwise.

The 24-year-old had said in an interview with HLTV that he was open to being IGL when he returned in July, but fell short of stating that he wanted the position.

THREAT identified leadership as an issue for the team in an in-house interview conducted by Ninjas in Pyjamas after his addition as GM, stating that there has been a "clear lack of leadership."

He seems like a guy who is easy to get along with, and have no problem sacrificing himself for the team. I am clueless about his tactical prowess, but he certainly has a personality which fits. I see no other choice in their roster, so it gotta be him taking over. He also speaks English better than any other Danish pro, including dupreeh.

They got desperate and wanted to find solutions quick I guess. It's quite sad because if you listen to Aleksis first interview after NIP benching he said he got on well with DJL, so he didn't really understand why he got benched. Probably Gundersen who made the move happen.

I think one really big reason was that NIP wanted to go back to majority Swedish roster (they made a big deal out of it in the social media once they got hampus back) and the other foreigners didn't feel as replaceable to them. Imo they should have just gotten hampus to replace either k0nfig or Brollan, because that would have fixed the obvious role issues between k0nfig and Brollan in the team. Also they didn't really even get to play with the original roster they wanted to which would have meant hampus instead of k0nfig.

-Brollan +Hampus is what me and a lot of people said at first, would have made a lot more sense.

First see what players get a little extra boost and who gets a little worse (peeking is stronger so might suit Brollan & k0nfig, AUG and Krieg are stronger which suits Brollan, CS2 is all about headshots which might suit REZ) and then in the off-season decide what changes need to be done if any.

If Hampus gets in a good spot where he can get a free kill on someone rotating you take that 9/10 times imo. iirc it was how NIP worked at first when Aleksib joined NIP, which was quite effective because those two complemented each other with their own strong points. Aleksib is really good with macro and overall strategies but too rigid while Hampus is quite adaptive with situations outside normal expectation/calculation. Take Aleksib in the team for 10 months. Make 7 roster changes during this time, replace him with hampus when they start to make notable progress instead of keeping both aleksi and hampus. Bench hampus after 4 months. oke

In hindsight if NIP really wanted hampus back they should have replaced brollan/k0nfig instead of aleksi and maybe used hampus as a second caller.

IMO hampus is not a one-for-one replacement for REZ, he might be for brollan but he is more similar to k0nfig in playing style. I thought hampus would work as good as aleksib as IGL so that made most sense to me if they really wanted him to come back to NIP. It should not have come as a surprise to the management that they would have to start over again but it seems like it did.. When aleksib joined NIP they fell out of being inside top 10 for a year straight to their lowest ever ranking at like #22 or something, took them half a year to come back to inside top 10 - changing IGL resets that progress.

True it wasn't pretty. But there were also several roster changes during that time including playing with an academy player. Then they acquired another academy player in the form of headtrick, who had a sort of bumpy start in T1. And when they finally started making progress, they decided to switch IGLs again, which made very little sense.

NIP has had 14 different players (excluding stand-ins!) since start of 2021 so no IGL has had an easy task. I agree that Aleksib deserved more time with the roster though, at least he is looking really good in Navi right now.

I dont understand why hampus has such a cult following. Despite failing more than aleksib, people are still riding him. He isn't a T1 igl and to be honest, not that good of a player either. Still, going to be really weird seeing NIP with a danish flag soon
