joel’s suspension to expire on January 6; no "compelling or conclusive" match-fixing evidence found

The 19-year-old will be allowed to take part in the upcoming Major cycle after serving “an effective seven-month ban” for betting offences.

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has announced that Joel "joel" Holmlund will be allowed to compete in its member events again from January 6, 2024, following the conclusion of its investigation into a case of betting offences involving the former GODSENT player.

On September 20, joel was provisionally suspended by ESIC pending the outcome of an investigation into claims that he had engaged in “corrupt behavior” earlier in the year, while competing under GODSENT’s banner. He had allegedly placed bets on matches in which he was playing, including two bets involving his own team, in addition to 17 bets on various CS:GO matches.

According to ESIC, joel failed to provide evidence to the contrary of the charges brought against him, which means that the original reason for his suspension was substantiated.

Despite initially stating that joel had played "particularly poorly" in one of the matches in which he had placed a bet against GODSENT - a reference that was later deleted from the press release -, ESIC has now sought to clarify that “there is no compelling or conclusive evidence” that he was involved in match-fixing.

When determining the length of joel’s ban, ESIC considered several factors, including his assistance with the investigation. According to the esports watchdog, the player provided “crucial information pertinent to ongoing inquiries.”

“His full and candid cooperation was helpful to ESIC’s ongoing investigations,” ESIC said. “Consequently, we have decided that a reduction in Mr. Holmlund's suspension is warranted and aligns with our principles of fairness and justice.”

Moreover, joel’s “genuine contrition and commitment to seeking professional help” were mitigating factors considered by ESIC, which stated that the player showed traits indicating that he suffered from a gambling addiction.

“Throughout the initial discussions, where Mr. Holmlund was supported by skilled legal counsel, he acknowledged his gambling issues and agreed to pursue professional counseling and treatment,” ESIC said.

In a statement, joel apologized to the Counter-Strike community for his actions, acknowledging that his behavior “was not only irresponsible but also undermined the principles of fair play and sportsmanship that are the foundation of competitive gaming.”

He has also agreed to collaborate with ESIC’s education program by creating video content highlighting the negative aspects of gambling and the risks associated with betting on a player’s own game.

Although joel was only provisionally suspended in August, ESIC says that, by January 6, he “will have served an effective seven-month ban from ESIC member events”. This means that his suspension is backdated from June 6, approximately two weeks after he was benched by GODSENT.

In August, joel played in the CCT North Europe Series 7 Closed Qualifier, and in September, in Pelaajat Nordic Masters Fall 2023 (a qualifier for the BLAST Premier Fall Showdown). The organisers of those two tournaments are not official ESIC members.

joel’s ban will expire just two days prior to the start of the open qualifiers for PGL Major Copenhagen, keeping alive his hopes of finding a new team soon. The 19-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most promising Swedish talents, averaging a 1.11 rating during his time on GODSENT.

"ESIC has granted me a second chance, and I'm committed to seizing it," joel wrote on Twitter. "I'm determined to embark on a path of redemption and make the most of this opportunity."

Guilty of betting on matches, innocent on match fixing charges I guess. Time to stop gambling ads. Too many kids are becoming gambling addicts and are destroying their lives. This site is as guilty as any other party. Money talks.

In theory one could have the mindset "I feel I'm going to lose this match, so let me bet something small like 100 dollars"(that's small to paid pro players) "And therefor it's not a large enough bet to convince me to lose, but it's large enough where IF I lose, I still win something." In theory this could happen, it just never does.

Precisely, and also if you're betting 100 dollars because you're not the favorite and likely very outmatched , well the odds for the match are going to be low and you're barely going to make any money betting against yourself unless it's a very large amount of money. Which of course wouldn't make sense to do unless you plan on throwing. I was moreso throwing it out there as a thought exercise rather than an actual possibility

you can't just hide the ads like hiding a bottle from an alcoholic. it just doesn't work. the addict will find a way to get what he wants. the issue is we need to prevent creating more addicts. i don't know how to do that. i learnt the lesson about gambling when i was 12. almost all the stores in finland have slot machines. i spent all my pocket money which wasn't much but it was much for me at the time (about 20 euros) and realized i turned all of my 20 euros into nothing. today the state has mandated that one must have legal documentation and an account registered in the state monopoly gambling company veikkaus to play at a slot machine. registration is required to play. no kid can go on a voyage of discovery about money anymore like that. it's not quite the same with digital lootboxes and keys.

Glad you stayed away from it bro. Agree totally about lootboxes etc. Not totally sure on the technicalities but afaik, they aren't considered gambling because you always win something. Things have changed since the old days, where everyone now has a casino in there pocket with 24/7 access. Not sure how much of a dent banning ads would make, they did it with tobacco in the UK. It would give new people less exposure though I guess. It's likely I would have never heard of any skin sites if I hadn't seen it advertised on YT or twitch. Just seems a bit scummy that businesses are so happy to take gambling money for ads, capitalising on misery. Especially in the gaming industry where there's so many young people.

of loot boxes legally they are not considered gambling then, but as far as common sense goes.. it looks deceptively like a slot machine.

30K might sound a lot, but the potential of the outcome of this case, it is nothing. If I’m Joel, I’m definitely consulting hundreds of attorneys till I find someone’s willing to take on this case. There are quite a few ways attorneys may prefer to get compensated.

I agree but no one sane would accept to finance that case and take 30 or 50% of outcome amount. I don't think t2 players can sue and pay tens of thousands for process ESIC could drag for 5 years for sure

Is there any evidence that he betted against his own team? No. Thats why the call it inconclusive evidence. If you hltv trolls went to school instead of being keyboard warriors you probably would picked up things like that in order to be convicted the prosecutor needs to present evidence beyond reasonable doubt, otherwise the defendant should be considered innocent. You know that old saying, innocent until proven guilty. Its actually how the real world works. Well in most countries *looking east of finland*

"Is there any evidence that he betted against his own team?" According to ESIC, yes there is, but it's "not conclusive" that he tried to lose that match Other players have been banned for 4 years for that same action. The reason his ban is reduced is supposedly that he gave info about other people

'In a statement, joel apologized to the Counter-Strike community for his actions, acknowledging that his behavior “was not only irresponsible but also undermined the principles of fair play and sportsmanship that are the foundation of competitive gaming.”' Pretty sure joel isnt denying he bet on matches. So he isnt particularly innocent. Its just that ESIC cant 100% prove it was intended for match fixing lol.

I mean this was a very obvious outcome to anyone who went through the matches ESIC pointed to as possible cases of matchfixing. Godsent either won them or lost to heavy favorites, with the only exception being a loss against "EPIC DUDES" where joel played quite poorly but watching the demo for his POV made it clear he wasn't throwing and just had some very unlucky timings and so on!

I interpret it that he got banned for several betting violations, but the major one of matchfixing has now been revoked as there is not enough evidence to convict. But he has still broken the ESIC code by betting in CS:GO matches (?) and that's why his ban is lifted on january 4th 2024 instead of right away. That's my take at least
2023-11-30 12:35

Why would ESIC claim that he had placed the bet in the first place, then? What a joke

Don't know if he is innocent or not but how can they ruin someones career just like that without evidence. "There is no evidence of match fixing only betting in general" so what made them ban him in the first place?

"..leading to feelings of deep depression and sadness. Simultaneously, I was in my final year of the demanding Natural Science program in senior high school, by far the hardest program to choose" gloat more, this kid will seriously never grow up. "deep depression" sure..

Nice Joel is back! He is too good and considering the amount of pros rn who still play whilst matchfixing it’s only right given no evidence xd

For the confused people; Betting against your own team gets an automatic ban. There is proof he did that so he received an immediate ban. ESIC also investigated him for match fixing which would've been another charge if they could prove it. They couldn't find evidence of match fixing. Because he helped them with the match fixing investigation, they are reducing the ban he received for betting against his own team. Have a great day.

*The players on this list who didn't even bet on their own games definitely have a right to question the absurdly biased sentences here; hltv.org/news/31037/esic-issues-35-bans-..

Oh haha no wonder I couldn't work it out! Well that came to mind because a lot of the players who were banned didn't even bet on their own team and the bans were longer. This is obviously worse.

Steal 1 kg of tomatoes in shop = jail Steal 4-5 digit sums every game via 322 = "7 months ban" lmao This is why pro CS is a joke, you can farm huge amount of money in tier 3 fixed leagues and worst thing that can happen is "ban in game" xd

ESIC are so toothless its kinda sad. this dude should be getting a multi-year ban just due to betting on cs matches and HIS OWN matches. at least he admitted he is gambling so any worthwhile org wont sign him anyways.
