Asia and Americas gain spots for Shanghai Major

Europe will have three fewer spots at the second Major of 2024 following the conclusion of the PGL Major Copenhagen's Opening Stage.

TheMongolz's qualification for the Elimination Stage in Copenhagen earned Asia a third spot at the Shanghai Major

The results of the Copenhagen Major's first stage have determined the regional slot distribution for the next Major, the Perfect World Shanghai Major taking place on December 1-15.

Regional slots at any Major are based on the region's performance at the previous, as per section "Regional Representation" of Valve's Major rulebook. Each team that advances to the top-16 stage earns their region a spot in addition to the Contender spots assigned to each by default (three to the Americas and Europe and two to Asia).

Thanks to The MongolZ advancing to the top-16 stage (now known as the Elimination Stage) in Copenhagen, Asia will have three spots at the first-ever Major held in their home region — the most since StarLadder Major Berlin 2019.

Perfect World announce Shanghai Major

Complexity, paiN, Imperial and FURIA qualifying for PGL Major's next phase means the Americas will hold seven spots at the Shanghai Major. That is the most the region has ever fielded since the stage previously known as the Main Qualifier (top 24) became a part of the Major for ELEAGUE 2018, and the joint-most when including past Main Qualifiers as well, along with MLG Columbus and ESL One Cologne 2016.

The new spots for the two smaller regions come at the expense of Europe, which will field 14 teams in Shanghai — three fewer than in Copenhagen and the fewest since IEM Katowice 2019.

The teams that advance to the playoffs of PGL Major Copenhagen will earn their region a direct invitation to the Shanghai Major's Elimination Stage.

It is worth noting that the slot distribution can change if a team that qualified for the top-16 stage switches region through lineup changes that affect its core's regional assignment. Such teams take their earned spots with them to the new region.

I was honestly expecting Legacy to qualify over paiN because they seemed to have lost most of their good players from previous iterations of their CS roster to other BR teams.

It's not somehow, if the spots in the RMR can't be divided equally than the region with the highest ranked team in the closed qualifiers gets the extra spot. Complexity was the highest ranked team in the closed qualifiers so NA got the extra spot. This time around if all 4 Americas teams in the top 16 keep their core they should get invited to the RMR and leave exactly 6 spots for NA and SA each.

Everything ok till this "It is worth noting that the slot distribution can change if a team that qualified for the top-16 stage switches region through lineup changes that affect its core's regional assignment. Such teams take their earned spots with them to the new region" This is what needs to be changed. Regions has nothing to do if a team decides to move, spots NEED to be tied to te region, if you want to move then just deal with it yourself
2024-03-20 22:20

If team has majority (or equal to majority) american players they can play in american qualifiers and probably will because its easier. They could move to region with more slots if they want, Europe for now, but european team can't come to american qualifier. Any team with core intact will probably not move region. Note that the slot is given to the core of players, not the org. Only way for any team at this instance to be forced to change without losing its core is if complexity decide to take two european players instead of na players. Other than team moving willingly that is, which will not happen.

Wouldn't matter if the team moved, the RMR they are placed in depends on the nationality of their players. Say ex-Grayhound found an org and they said 'you are moving to Europe full time'. They still have to come back to Aus for the RMR open qualifiers.

wait everything about region spots is good but if I'm not wrong as i understand 8 teams that qualify for playoff stage gets guaranteed spots for elimination stage for next shangai major wich doesn't make any sense major is about hard and long term of wining from open qualifier to rmr and nobody should be in the next major without playing qualifiers.
2024-03-20 23:07

Nobody is guaranteed major spots. Being top 8 just earns your region a spot, you still have to go through the RMR and earn it again after that.

To use your example then, 5 of 16 would be 31.25%. 31.25% of 24 is 7.5. Do they get 7 spots or 8? Had they been using that, Asia representation would have been non-existent after Stockholm, with no chance of ever getting back in. So no Mongolz getting top 16 here and earning another slot. There's nothing that needs to be fixed.

So basically what you are asking for is the Katowice/Cologne format. Good news, you can just watch those instead. The majors can be equated to the world cup for instance, as the biggest tournament of its sport. That does not get the 32 top ranked teams, that gets the teams that qualify from each region, and each region has a set number of spots regardless of rankings.
2024-03-21 13:49

+1 Major is the biggest event in CS, it should bring teams from the entire world, like you said, it's our world cup equivalent, that's why there are other events which only the best of the best in each tier compete, so we get the best of both worlds.

Remembering that among the Brazilian teams that helped secure more slots for the Americas, only Fúria remains fixed in Europe; the other three have stayed in the region. This means that our style of play can indeed improve, but it can still be very strong.
