Elimination Stage Round 1 ends with G2 and Spirit victories

Two favorites have booked their spot in the 1-0 pool after opening victories.

The first round of PGL Major Copenhagen's Elimination Stage has come to an end, with G2 and Spirit entering the 1-0 pool.

Spirit met Cloud9 in what was the most-anticipated match of the day, and Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov's troops didn't start strong against a warmed-up Cloud9. After going 5-3 down, they stabilized to take a 7-5 lead into the T-side after a couple of passive setups on both sites.

The start of the second half was a scrappy affair, with Spirit coming out on top after Myroslav "zont1x" Plakhotia's 1vs3 clutch in the third round. That allowed them to take a healthy lead and eventually close out the map 13-7, booking their spot in the 1-0 pool.

G2 got their Major campaign off to a hot start after demolishing FURIA in a 13-3 beatdown on Inferno. Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen and company started on the CT side and were quickly 8-0 up, but their perfect half unraveled late as FURIA racked up three in a row. In the end, though, G2 barely broke a sweat after securing the required four rounds on the offense to record a statement win.

Standings after round 1

After a few upsets in the first round some of the favorites are sitting in the 0-1 pool. The seeding was kind this time around, with FaZe, Virtus.pro, Vitality, and Cloud9 all avoiding each other in the second round.

Natus Vincere vs. G2 is the headline game of the 1-0 pool, with Spirit playing against Imperial, who are on an impressive underdog run in Copenhagen. You can take a look at the entire schedule below.

my only question is why do the matchups in second match follow a different format. 1st match was 1st seed vs 9th seed, 2nd vs 10th and so on. Then second match its back to 1st seed vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th,3rd vs 6th etc... doesnt make much sense.

I've done a little research lately. If in first round first seed plays with sixteenth, second with fifteenth and so on, and it's the same for every round AND if every seed wins a game against lower seed eighth seeded team doesn't qualify. Even more - eleventh seeded team qualify instead. It was really bad. With current system if every seed wins their respective game buchholz gives the same results as starting seeding which is miles better than punishing eighth team just for existing in this system

This mix of formats still gives high seed team advantage by playing weaker seed in second round (as they deserve) while making first round more interesting and balanced.

ngl i was worried for spirit, considering c9's run on the major and RMRs but expected nonetheless. as boom said - "we had a lot of luck on our side", and luck alone doesn't cut it
