HooXi on struggling to close games: "Something with the Major is getting into our heads"

One step away from reaching Major playoffs, G2's captain discussed the nerves that he was feeling on his home turf.

HooXi frequently shouted at ECSTATIC throughout the team's elimination match

After securing a 2-1 victory over Danish side ECSTATIC in the 1-3 pool of PGL Major Copenhagen's Elimination Stage, G2 are now just one BO3 away from reaching Major playoffs. A victory in tomorrow's match would earn the organization its first Major Top 8 appearance since PGL Major Stockholm three and a half years ago.

G2's win over ECSTATIC did not come without any hardship for the international side, however. After securing a confident victory on their own pick of Inferno, G2 allowed ECSTATIC's pick of Vertigo to slip away from them 11-13. In the end, a heroic performance from Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov kickstarted G2's run on the decider of Anubis, allowing them to lock down the series 2-1.

Shortly after his team's victory over ECSTATIC, G2 captain Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen spoke to HLTV regarding the matchup versus his countrymen, the nerves he has surrounding reaching Major playoffs in his home country, and the shouting he had directed at ECSTATIC coach Peter "casle" Ardenskjold during the match.

If you can't see the embed above, listen to the audio interview here.

Close win over ECSTATIC. Tell me about your thoughts from that game.

I think that we were clearly the better team, especially on our CT sides. I think we have a hard time closing out games, closing out rounds. I think it's a lot due to nerves, due to our heads not being in the right place. It's weird with us having such an old team, but I can't really explain to you why it is like this. I think that it's just like something with the Major that is getting into our heads. We should have closed out both games honestly way earlier, even Vertigo we should have closed out. I'm honestly happy with how we played for the majority of the time, it's just about closing out the game.

You're not the only one who mentioned nerves to me, even rain mentioned today that he was feeling some nerves. Why do you think that is? I know you said you can't pinpoint, but do you have anything about that?

I'm feeling it a little bit, not too much. For me, it's not anything mysterious; it's in Denmark, I want to play in front of a Danish crowd, my family is coming, it's a Major. I think for the rest, it's just like we haven't been on the stage at a Major in a long time; Ilya has never been on the stage at the Major and he definitely deserves it, especially with the way he played today, he did some crazy rounds. I think that's the main reason why the nerves are getting a bit too our heads.

Obviously last Major was a very sad ending for you guys. Coming here to your home Major, can you tell me about the motivation for you guys especially with the slow start you have had?

I think that we actually had a really hard start, we were against FURIA and then it got slow afterwards which I was very surprised about. I thought if we would struggle it would be because of a slow start of not playing officials for some time. Obviously, it means a ton to us to perform well, and we've been at a bootcamp for I think even over two weeks, so it's not like the motivation or preparation is not there. It's just about getting our heads in the right place.

Lastly, I want to say, you were very loud during that game, I heard you almost every single round that you were winning. Can you tell me a little about the rivalry and the banter back and forth from you?

I think, first of all, I wanted to give some energy to my team and to myself. Also, they are a young inexperienced team, and I think maybe some yelling could get into their heads. The last thing is their coach has a past that I think he deserves to be yelled at a bit. (laughs)

Can you expand on that at all?

I'm just not a huge fan of the whole coach bug thing. Obviously, he served his time so it's not like it's anything crazy personal or something, but I just think it's like something where you're allowed to yell at him a bit, no? (laughs)

Going forward, you're 2-2, one BO3 from playoffs, but also one away from elimination. What are your general feelings on that and having this do-or-die match to make Major playoffs now?

One BO3 with MR12 doesn't sound like a lot, but it feels like ten miles away right now. I don't even know who we play or anything, so it's just about going back to the prac room now, watching our game back, and as soon as we know our opponent just get ready to prepare and do like any other match. Hopefully, we will show a bit more cohesion and calmness tomorrow.

Big motivation for you as well to play in the Royal Arena.

Definitely, huge motivation.

Should've ended the series on vertigo but too many ego peeks with the big lead and lack of respect for backstabs. Dont get me start on losing to NAVI and C9.. These mistakes are just not good enough if you want to win the major.

i dont understand Niko , like bro you are not that good so just play smart for once ffs, pushing smoke for no reason , peaking out wide with 3 enemies infront of him. He has been just bad, same with nexa and hooxi. overpeeking in a clutch for no reason , like dude where did you get the confidence to overpeeK? your are definitely not the one carrying your team so at least try to do your part.

Fine But I really don't think it's a big deal if, as you say, he yelled noob at him. Patti told bank in his interview that he feels ok about that , hooxi also had a friendly interaction with kraghen and cheered for ECS to qualify on X . In fact it's like a banter between friends , especially there were 2 ex-teammates there as well .

You mean by waiting until 15 seconds before the end to attack? Just to run into a stack or lose 1 player and save with 4 players alive. Yea, no, Jame himself is a mid igl, pretty overrated in general and most boring playstyle. We will see though, I’m not saying G2 is great atm

I used "likely the only Dane" because both G2 and Faze look shaky af and I do not think there's a reasonable chance for both of them to go through. I'd even give G2 a better chance cause they are against VP who has shown some flaws against chaotic systems like G2's, cause on the other hand Complexity is giving a lot more and they usually play real well against Faze. But not a better chance by much. They can both go through, but I wouldn't bet on it.

the vp match up could go either way by a landslide i feel. I think it still favours VP for the individuals if not for anything else. after watching yesterday's anubis i am sure that G2's individuals cannot be relied on (excpet monesy ofc). after that monesy round at 0-4 he literally pulled the G2 out of the depressing mood. then they started to do something. the lineup is dead as it is. Hooxi and monesy are the only prospects who will be sought after this lineup disintegrates. maybe Niko for a role not like G2 , he cannot justify that size of space anymore.

I got no clue what's going on with Niko, he's deep inside his own head and needs to find a way to reset that at any cost. Could be that in CS2 he cannot hit a flow state like he could in CSGO and it just will take some time, he is getting kinda better on average and we're seeing some glimpses of what he was. Ofc it's not a straight way up, it's bumpy. That round on Nuke gave me a lot of hope, when he was spotted going secret on CT side, then made a quick rotation to jump on a container outside and catch them trying to pressure his last known position. That was good, that was vintage Niko. Niko is still there, I feel like it's just a big mental hurdle for him. From being top 2 player to this, I do not buy into the idea that he's washed.

I too do not believe that he is washed but i do believe that cs2 Niko can be top 5 rifler if he finds his consistency but I have not seen the peaks of 2023 or 2021 often enough to even hope that he could grind back to being top 3 rifler again ever ( 1 and 2 being zywoo and donk ofc). That coupled with his choking habits in important matches vs big teams makes him even less desirable for a star rifler in a top 5 team. only if he could consistently ( 80 percent of the games) drop even 1.15 I would be happy.

I would assume that CS2 shook his confidence and that reversed some of his progress with choking. He just needs to grind a lot to reach that flow state, I know it's hard and at his age it is harder to spend so much time with the game. CS2 got people hyped and a lot of people are overworking them selves, feel like that adds to the struggles of Niko - he just continued practicing as if it's still CSGO.

yeah , you summed up pretty well , young players have been improving mostly in cs2 vs csgo ,some of the old players as well like rain and apex. if only Niko can overcome his mental apex , he can still be a pretty good star rifler no doubt. His aim has gone nowhere as seen once every blue moon but his consistency has taken a massive toll. anyways he still has got atleast 2 years of t1 cs in him. if he can do something about it in the given time , he for sure can be a major winner :)

Where tf does this G2/HooXi/NiKo hate wave come from? In the article "RAIN: "I FEEL SOME NERVES", few criticism and more encouragement can be seen even though FaZe&G2 are both 2-2 now.

I can think of one person from the talent speaking something bad about G2 and everyone believing it even if no one confirmed what that person said. No one, others actually said it was different. But that person chose to deliver that message in a hateful manner full of rage which is enough to stir up the cancel culture to focus all their hate on G2. Cause that was the point, there was no intention to make a professional truthful report. We usually don't trust a single person saying something, but haters are not really reasonable - they just want to hate and G2 is a good enough target for that. If this thread is what's publicly said I can imagine how their dm's look like.... It's sad people are this easy to manipulate.

orgs dont realize that the igl is the most important signing, not star rifler or awper. Thats why current navi is doing so well. There are plenty of 15 year old talents that have monesy level mechanics.
