G2 edge out Virtus.pro after crucial Jame crash in Major playoffs decider

A technical issue in a map-deciding situation put an asterisk next to G2's playoffs qualification.

G2 are through to the playoffs at PGL Major Copenhagen after a rollercoaster series against Virtus.pro. After being unable to close out a late lead on Overpass, the European side narrowly survived Inferno after "divine intervention" helped them close out the map, and won out the deciding Anubis with ease.

Virtus.pro exit the Major in harrowing fashion after Dzhami "Jame" Ali timed out in a crucial 4v4 retake scenario in the penultimate round of the second map in a malfunction that was caused by a driver crash, according to PGL.

Jame and company had won a chaotic opening map of Overpass after recovering from a 9-12 deficit, and the score on the second map was 11-11 when the crash took place.

Although it's impossible to tell what would have happened without it, it ultimately helped decide their fate as the Russian in-game leader drifted into open space and got killed from the CT spawn to make it a 3v4. G2 went on to retake the B bombsite to clinch map point and closed the map in the final round of regulation.

"With divine intervention comes G2's redemption," Harry "JustHarry" Russell called out after the second map came to a close.

If the situation was playing on Jame's mind after the match, he did not let it be known in the interview with Pala "Pala" Gilroy Sen. The in-game leader only spoke of his disappointment with the level they showed. "I'm so disappointed in our game," he said. "It was maybe the best preparation we had in our team, but it wasn't enough for a win versus G2."

The unfortunate situation puts an asterisk next to G2's hard-fought playoffs qualification after they recovered from the overtime loss on Overpass and a horrid start to Inferno. Virtus.pro suffocated their offense on the second map and looked to be in the driving seat until G2's multiple low buy wins and a last-moment defuse put them back in contention.

A quick affair on Anubis followed, with G2 running rampant on the CT side, unanswered until the ninth round. A cosmetic comeback at the end of the first half changed nothing, as Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen and company ran out victors with a comfortable Terrorist display, with Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov ending the map with a 2.06 rating and 124 ADR.

Maybe so, but the G2 is a CS team, not the graphic card manufacturers, so why blame them? Also, nexa had a crash yesterday vs ecstatic while they were struggling, no one were lamenting regarding that situation. Jame is a professional and he didn't wanna adress that issue with a single word, so it was a minor problem for him, much bigger problem was G2 anti-strating his calls which led to their demise.

A major difference is that this crash in particular likely decided the entire series. Nexa's crash was never going to make much difference.

Like he easily missed mpnesy while defusing? Now, that shit wasn't made up! That would be a breaking point that would eventually led to VP's 2:0 and yet, it didn't played out. Nexa was a factor X in this series and well deserved, because he had a same crash vs Ecstaatic and not a single soul complained about that. When you compete in E-sports, you have to calculate the risk that "E" can cause an issue and affect your game.

But then he got crash and cannot see anything, thats why he moved TO THE RIGHT, then got killed by hooxi after like 3 seconds If he wouldnt crash he would definitelly move back to triple hide, its normal reaction to hide back and play time as terro if u think that he would stay there trying to scope and kill botxi you are silver

In starcraft 2 you can resume the match from exactly where you want. Should be possible to do in cs2 as well so in this case replay the round from the moment jame crashed. A technical issue which most likely made VP loose the series and getting knocked out of one of the biggest tournaments of the year should never happen if you want the most fair outcome and the best teams to win. It's just incredibly unfair the way things are now. It's why they implemented VAR in sports so goals really are goals and not fully dependent on referee and something needs to be done about this in CS.

i don't know how starcraft works, but that would be pretty weird to implement in cs, because you would then know the positions of all of the enemies

How would you know the positions of all of the enemies when you only see your own POV as player? Basically in a tournament, if a player crashes midgame or whatever. They create a new lobby with the replay(same as demo in cs), players join, then they choose at what time the game will continue and then start the game and everything continues as usual. I realize it might be difficult to implement something like this in CS but my point is something needs to be done so that unfair outcomes like this does not happen, whatever that solution is.

Well, it depends on whether they'd be able to pause the game fast enough or not. In case that doesn't happen and the round plays out anyway, sharing all the information obtained by everyone makes it easy to know where all the enemies are about to come from. Replaying the round from the start would be a solution, albeit a debatable one.

A pause system that freezes the round as soon as the issue occurs. It's probably not feasible to create an automatic one, therefore it would require admins to be as quick as possible in their intervention. It's not perfect, but it's probably the closest thing to a fair solution. There's something similar in league.

Restarting the round could be unfair to the other team in some cases, and it's not their fault either. Then you could imagine a rule like "Restart the round if the team which has the technical issue has the advantage", but you need to define "has the advantage" and you get into smoky territories. Anyway it happens so rarely that the current solution is still likely the best.

I don't think it should be up to the opponent to ask for replay and show "good sportsmanship". There should be a system in place to help when things like this happens so it isn't unfair towards 1 team like it is now, where round will not be replayed due to player damage taking place. It's unacceptable for a team to loose and get knocked out of one of the biggest tournaments of the year due to a game crash.

players complained about their shit PCs even during RMRs which lead to them switching CPUs on all of their rigs, they wrote about that on twitter even. Should I mention the tech issues beyond that? I work as a video editor for a local esports channel so i have to watch this event start to finish Aside from multiple audio issues, because ofc PGL can't make audio work good to save their lives, here's what i encountered myself^ -RMRs - showed their console -RMRs - messed up the obvserver HUD -RMRs - shit rigs, CPU switch -Stage1- console again -Stage1 - image froze -Stage2 - this VP-G2 nonsense And that's me only able to watch the half of what was shown, and I had to miss multiple hours of 50% that i was physically able to watch. PGL is UNABLE to produce a good quality event no matter how you look at it. And that's only THIS TIME. Every event they host has some stuff no other host ever shows... EVER. Everyone shits on PGL, "PGL Audio" - is a common meme, yet somehow they still have events to host...

you're acting like no other events have technical issues. Gamers8 (hosted by esl) had the longest tech pause in probably any tier1 event by a big margin. Blast manor the hud disappeared a good few times for the duration of a round Yes, the production of RMRs for this major was shit. But the major itself has a fairly acceptable amount of problems. 3 issues in the half of the tournament you watched (1 of which isn't their fault), so 4 issues in 8 10hour production days total is normal
2024-03-24 21:09

the 1st 2 paragraphs are fair points but the 3rd one requires clarification 3 issues of LESS than the half of the tournament. EXCLUDING like 8-10 audio glitches i've witnessed in that LESS than the half of the tournament. And I did miss some portions of RMRs too... That's way too much, don't you agree?

Yes. They won fair and square as proven on Anubis, they were also not the cause of the crash. Get over it.

So much for AMD drivers being bad. Ironic, that Nvidia drivers suck like this Anyway, we will never know what would’ve happened without the bug, don’t pretend as if it was VPs round 100% EZ Clap btw

But every sane person would have known the following for certain: Without that tech issue occurring, VP's morale would have been on entirely different level even if they'd lose the round and the map anyway

I didn’t say “nothing” but in his mind he blamed team performance for it and not 1 round for the entire game. You’re delusional. These are pro gamers they don’t throw a whole map because they lost 1 round on the previous map. They had time to reset but they sucked on Anubis, end of story

No one says they "threw", it was a devastating thing to happen. And the delusional one is in fact you, if you think that if they are pros they aren't human and can't succumb to emotions, especially you know that you are strong enough but the world itself is against you. Either your brain hasn't fully developed yet, no offense, so you don't quite understand how one event occurring leads to a series of reactions that affect your mind. Or you have never seen pros lose it for lesser reasons and in some cases still maintain composure... This is what makes them pros...

No problem, stay delusional, your opinion is then that these guys are no pros and something which happened to them multiple times extremely affected them, even according to Jame you’re talking nonsense. He blamed team performance on 3rd map especially, so stay alone and delusional with your opinion, as the only opinion which matters here is of VP players not of delusional fanboys like yourself.

You probably the type of guy who believes anything he reads/sees on internet/tv. -You assume that what he says in public true, as if no one (cadian) before him put on a mask for a press. -You assume im a VP fanboy, though I'm not. -You can't see past what is presented to you because you are too clueless to do so. -You assume I don't see them as pros because you think that i think they are the opposite when my point is that they are human beings first... Then again flair checks out, so the one delusional here is you.

Didn’t read, the only thing which checks out is your flag, you’re mad your team lost and now you’re grasping for excuses / coping with dumb discussions on the internet. Take the L / take it like a man and be less pathetic.

I actually watched this game and saw it happen. It was absolutely horrible. Obviously talent it paid to cover the events reputation but the narrative of "divine intervention" "fate" et al was just sofa king stupid I couldn't believe it. Feel bad for VP. They deserved to win or lose without that happening.

You’d be crazy to think that VP weren’t in an advantageous position when that crash happened. Also who ever was the guy that killed him there took forever to even kill him lol. Crazy thing is if he crashed but remained hidden behind new box, VP probably still could have won the round because g2 would be worrying about 4 players still instead of 3. Quite possibly would have played out different on that retake if new box didn’t get cleared so early. It’s sad to see. I know g2 could have also just won the round straight up even if Jame didn’t crash. But we will never know now. I know that shit will be eating him alive for a while. He’s being a professional about it which I respect. But I know that is probably bothering him a lot on the inside

The amount of clipping issues is also staggering. I bet Valve are playing foosball while raking in the dough, the Valve guys earn more per employee than Apple, FB etc. Absurd a proper CS competitor hasn't arrived yet.

Yes, indeed it happens! Sadly it happens more than what should be expected from a "major" tournament and, above all, on a decisive game. It's just absolutely ridiculous that, unarguably the worse player ever to touch a keypad, ended up game shouting like it they achieve a big win, after not being able to have one single kill in 11 rounds... Hopefully, karma will catch up! GJ Virtus!
