Complexity end 14-year LAN trophy drought with ESL Challenger Jönköping title

EliGE was the star as the North American team came out on top in the championship match.

Complexity toppled Falcons to win ESL Challenger Jönköping

Complexity beat Falcons 2-0 on Sunday to claim the ESL Challenger Jönköping 2024 trophy and put an end to the American organization's 14-year wait for a LAN trophy.

The last time Complexity won an offline event was in 2010, when a full Brazilian roster that included Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo beat Evil Geniuses in New York in the grand final of the IEM V American Championship Finals, in 1.6. Since then, Complexity had been to several finals, in CS:GO and then CS2, but had always been on the losing end of such matches.

Complexity traveled to Sweden hoping to end the season on a high note after group stage exits at IEM Dallas and YaLLa Compass. A 13-10 loss to ENCE was the only bump in the road for Johnny "JT" Theodosiou's troops, who edged past MIBR in the group's decider stage and Aurora in the semi-finals to set up a clash with Falcons in the final.

Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski played a key role in Complexity's victory in the final with a series-high 1.47 rating in two close maps (13-10 on Vertigo and 13-9 on Nuke). His performance capped off a solid tournament in which he averaged a 1.34 rating, the third-highest overall, only behind Azbayar "Senzu" Munkhbold (1.40) and Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen (1.37).

"It feels really good," EliGE said after the match. "We've been through a lot. A lot of really close losses. A lot of crazy wins. To be able to end it with something to show for it makes me really happy."

Despite the loss, Falcons have qualified for ESL Pro League Season 20 as Complexity already hold a spot in the tournament as a Louvre Agreement team.

That, together with the fact that the team gave a good account of itself in Jönköping by beating The MongolZ, ENCE, and playing two close games against Complexity, will ease some of the pain from a season in which Falcons fell short of expectations.

"Lost in the final, too many clutches lost, that's Counter-Strike" Álvaro "SunPayus" García wrote on X after the match. "Got the EPL spot anyway. Happy for the team. We showed a better face of ourselves, disappointed with the loss. See you next season and sorry to the fans out there."

Tier 1 are those who are regarded as top-tier and receive invites to the most prestigious tournaments. Complexity and Falcons are at the bottom of tier 1 right now. MIBR and Mongolz are definitely not tier 1 since they're not getting big invites. They would have to be a consistent top 10 team for a while to be considered tier 1.

True, there is the exception of teams who bought into franchise leagues when they used to be tier 1. EG and NiP only stuck around because they paid ESL and Blast a lot and signed a contract.

Just the other day some guy commented that "at least MiBR can win Challenger events" in regards to coL (he was implying MiBR were better). Pretty funny really. Maybe this will give them some actual confidence so they can win a real trophy at some point. Also wtf is this photo:

... or maybe this "title", which let's face it, it's a B-tier event, will only validate the management and Jason Lake into thinking that this mediocre roster can actually compete in S/A-tier events so that they can waste EliGE's prime even more.
