MIBR break four-series loss streak to 9z at close of EPL day one

9z have been cast down to the lower bracket after dropping their first series to MIBR in nearly a year.

The first day of ESL Pro League Season 20 in Malta has wrapped with G2 beating KOI and MIBR taking down 9z to kick off Group B.

G2 looked patchy in the first halves of both Inferno and Mirage, winning the pistols but going down 3-7 and 3-8, respectively, but stepped up after the side swaps with a flawless eight-round run on the T side of Inferno and imperious defense on Mirage to close out the game.

9z came into the South American match-up as favorites due to their form in the past three months and head-to-head record against MIBR, which stands at four series wins in a row and 4-1 since the release of CS2.

Maximiliano "⁠max⁠" Gonzalez's side shot up the rankings after they won FiReLEAGUE Global Finals, made the semi-finals of IEM Dallas before the tournament break, and advanced through the Play-in stage of IEM Cologne when play resumed in August with a win over MIBR.

The Brazilian team finally claimed revenge and tallied their first victory over 9z in almost a year, but were made to work for it in the two-map series. MIBR got off to strong CT starts on Anubis and Nuke, going up 6-0 and 5-1, but struggled to close a 12-8 lead on the former and had to fight from behind on the latter, recovering from a 5-10 deficit with eight rounds straight to close the series.

Earlier in the day, the four opening matches of Group A played out with Eternal Fire and Natus Vincere securing comfortable wins, Sangal upsetting FaZe, and Ninjas in Pyjamas beating HEROIC after the latter had a map win overturned due to René "⁠TeSeS⁠" Madsen having Snap Tap enabled.
