Rundown: ESL's 2025 circuit in detail and changes

With ESL's circuit announcement came some changes to formats, slot distribution and qualifiers. Here's a rundown of each of the seven events.

The 2025 calendar continues to fill up with details as tournament organizers tackle Valve's new tournament operating rules heading into the next year.

After PGL and BLAST unveiled most details about their events, ESL has now also revealed how its circuit will look in 2025. With that announcement came one crucial change to formats — to do with ESL Pro League — and a bigger shift in how teams participating in ESL events will be determined in a much busier calendar than we've seen in the past few years.

Here's a simple rundown of the details and most important changes, event by event:

IEM Katowice and Cologne

ESL's flagship competitions, the EPT Championships in Katowice and Cologne, will largely remain the same. They will feature the same three-stage format with 16 teams starting from the first and eight teams getting to skip to the second.

The main change is that all 24 teams will be invited based on Valve's Global Standings. Previously, ESL invited teams who won select events in their circuit or by the ESL ranking, plus one local team from an open qualifier.

Stage 1
— 16 teams invited from Global VRS
— Double-elimination, BO3 bracket

Stage 2
— 8 teams invited from Global VRS
— 8 teams advance from Stage 1
— Two double-elimination, BO3 groups

Playoffs
— 6 teams advance from Stage 2
— Single elimination format

IEM Spring and IEM Chengdu

The Master-level IEMs — those other than Katowice and Cologne — will retain the same format seen in previous iterations: 16 teams play in two double-elimination groups for six spots in the playoffs.

However, unlike in previous years ESL will host no qualifiers for Spring or Chengdu, as instead all teams will be invited via Valve's Ranking. Regional representation will still be ensured:

Group stage
— 16 teams invited (10 Global, 2 EU, 2 AM, 2 AS)
— Two double-elimination, BO3 groups

Playoffs
— 6 teams advance from group stage
— Single elimination format

IEM Dallas

The format remains the same once again for IEM Dallas, but the teams will be decided via a combination of ranking invites and qualifiers:

Group stage
— 8 teams invited (5 EU, 1 NA, 1 SA, 1 AS)
— 8 teams qualified (5 EU, 1 NA, 1 SA, 1 AS)

Playoffs
— 6 teams advance from group stage
— Single elimination format

ESL Pro League S21

ESL Pro League will undergo the biggest change out of all events on the ESL circuit.

First of all, it will be reduced to 24 teams from the 32 teams we have seen in the past four seasons. Secondly, it will be run in a format used at the Majors (except with best-of-threes). One Swiss stage will lead to another with eight teams invited a stage ahead of the other 16.

Half of the teams will be directly invited, while the other half will come from ESL Challenger Leagues in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania, and ESL Challenger winners from this year's Atlanta (FlyQuest) and Katowice.

Stage 1
— 4 teams invited from Global VRS
— 10 teams qualify from ECL (2 EU, 2 NA, 2 SA, 2 AS, 2 OCE)
— 2 teams qualify from ESL Challenger Atlanta and Katowice 2024
— BO3 Swiss format

Stage 2
— 8 teams invited from Global VRS
— 8 teams advance from Stage 1
— BO3 Swiss format

Playoffs
— 8 teams advance from Stage 2
— Single elimination format

ESL Pro League S22

The only difference for the second ESL Pro League season of 2025 is how the team distribution will change between invites and qualifiers for Stage 1:

Stage 1
— 7 teams invited from Global VRS
— 5 teams qualify from ECL (1 EU, 1 NA, 1 SA, 1 AS, 1 OCE)
— 4 teams qualify from Tier 1 Regional Events (1 EU, 1 NA, 1 SA, 1 AS)
— BO3 Swiss format

Why would bigger teams want to participate in future ESL Challenger leagues if only the top team gets invited? Whats the point for Imperial, Pain, MIBR, Fluxo, and 9z in SA for example to all still participate if only one of them will even get a chance to gain entry into ESL Pro League. Ah yes, ESL Challenger league OCE, free entry tor Flyquest into Pro League, while the rest of the league gets absolutely nothing. There will be a multitude of tournaments and TOs that will be a much better use of time even for these top ESL Challenger teams simply because of how futile it is to participate. In OCE, itll be impossible to qualify because of Flyquest, and in EU and SA, it'll be impossible to qualify because the competition level is insane. That whole stage 1 should be ESL Challenger sphere teams, reward those smaller teams who have been loyal to ESL and stayed in its ecosystem, rather than giving away 4-7 spots to teams that might even participate in ESL Challenger league, lost, and then get invited anyway because of VRS, or worse, to random teams who dont participate in the ESL Ecosystem and got a top 4 finish at PGL Astana and now suddenly find themselves in the top 16 teams on VRS and get invited solely off of that. Its so unfair to the top teams of ESL Challenger league because they get less chances to qualify, its unfair to the crap teams because theyre just there to lose, its unfair for the middling teams because even if they became a top 3 teams in their league, they would still get nothing but prize money out of it, and not even that much compared to getting top 3 at some local events. Honestly Pro League should be a celebration of the ESL Ecosystem, more spots given to the teams that acrually participate in it, with minimal VRS invitations. Stage 2 should be top 2 teams from NA SA EU Challenger league, and winner of OCE and Asia Challenger League, while Stage 1 includes 2nd and 3rd place teams in each region from OCE and Asia, 3rd and 4th from NA SA, 3rd-8th from EU and the last 2 spots go to ESL Challenger league events such as Katowice and Atlanta. Would look like this: Stage 1 invites: 8th EU 7th EU 6th EU 5th EU 4th EU 3rd EU 4th NA 3rd NA 4th SA 3rd SA 3rd OCE 2nd OCE 3rd Asia 2nd Asia ESL Challenger League Atlanta Winner ESL Challenger League Katowice Winner Stage 2 Invites: 1st OCE 1st Asia 2nd EU 1st EU 2nd SA 1st SA 2nd NA 1st NA If ESL really cared about all that regional development it boasts, it would make ESL Challenger League matter. It should be about the ESL teams, not some random VRS invite BS. If Faze wants to participate in Pro League, they better participate in Challenger League. As it stands, ESL are going to kill off their Challenger League simply because it wont be worth it for anyone to participate anymore other than to collect that less than 1000$ cheque theyll get for participating.

To be fair, you will see Housebets, and Mindfreak at the next esl pro league, alongside flyquest because they won atlanta. Season 21 isnt screwed FOR OCE, its seriously season 22 where only 1 invite is given and then the 4 regional tier 1 events dont give a spot to OCE. Going from 3 possible slots to 1 is detrimental in so many ways :/

Play the tier 2 events that are going to popup. There should be plenty of them, and past tha, there will be a slew of unranked events that will still have prizepools. Whats the point in playing in a 3 month long tournament, in which you only qualify by winning promotion in an even worse league beforehand, just to win 8th place and make 1250$? When getting an 8th place at CCT is 2000$, its much more worth playing in these "mickey mouse" tourneys with 50k prizepools and being mediocre there, where the prizepools are much higher, and competition might bot be as harsh, compaared to getting absolutely nothing for being mediocre after a 3 month tournament. Even just getting 3rd in OCE is 1300$, there's no tournaments that happen in OCE, but 1300$ for being 2nd runner up is laughable, how are AU teams meant to survive? Their money would legitimately be better spent bootcamping for many months in EU and playing tournanebts where they are assured to make a larger chunk of cash each tournament even if they are mediocre at worst. The open qualis for Tier 1 events might be drying up, but the tier 2 scene should still be as it is right now, filled with random tournanents, and open qualis.

It's hard to say for sure without knowing the details of these tier 2 events you allude to, but I think your comment partially answers exactly why you would spend 3 months in a tournament to qualify: a.) Playing in ECL doesn't keep you from playing in other events. Maybe you don't win but you should try. b.) There are no details about CCT events at this point, but chances are for the majority of non-EU teams it won't be a viable path to tier 1. c.) CCT and similar events don't always have open qualifiers, why do you think they will have them now? d.) Unranked events aren't a factor because they offer no ranking points and won't improve a team's position in the circuit. e.) If your ranking is to low to make it into any other tier 1 event, trying for EPL via ECL is at least a reliable path. I agree that things look bad for Oceania, but it's not like they are in good spot right now either. Hopefully someone takes up the mantle of running events there. To be clear, I'm not talking about teams that are good enough to get invited to the bigger events. They will likely skip ECL for the reasons you outline above. With events overlapping, that could even be teams in the top 50 or so of Valve's ranking.

I guess you have nothing to lose in joining ECL, but you barely gain a thing if you arent destined to with the tournament outright anymore. It makes sense for very small orgs to go for. I work with Homyno, our goal was and still is to make ESL Challenger League, that money would mean a lot to the org and players, and that doesnt change with these format changes unless the prizepool implodes and decreases. I get it makes complete sense for teams like this, even if we do just end up being punching bags for the M80s and Wildcards of the league. But these bigger orgs like Wildcard and M80, are they willing to stay in ESL Challenger league? Or will they go and become PGL/Starladder sphere teams instead? Sure they could play in both, but thats what ESL shouldnt want. ESL should be rewarding the orgs and teams that are both good and sticking around with ESL. I explained it in another previous post, but Blast is looking at a sphere of C9, Spirit, VP, Astralis, and Falcons at all their events. Expect some one off appearances from the other top teams, but for the most part, these teams will mainly participate in Blast and PGL, while avoiding ESL events. hltv.org/forums/threads/2932755/which-te.. hltv.org/forums/threads/2932755/which-te.. Im just peeved that NA and OCE and even less lower end EU teams will get to participate in pro league. Pro league should be a promotion relegation league dammit, fed straight from challenger league. At the end of the day you're right, they will play, and pro league will likely be fun to watch still, even if its just a major-like event with some closed qualis, i just feel like you pay the price as Challenger league team when you're too good to be relegated and not good enough to make a deep playoff run. You're just there, existing, making an extra 1000-2000$ if you're lucky. It's just sad is all.

Yes, I largely agree with what you are saying here. I do think that a team like M80 are going to be good enough to skip out on ECL going forward and that teams like the MongolZ won't return to ECL in Asia, etc. I feel like ECL is going to act as an extend qualifier for teams that aren't quite good enough to break into the tier 1 circuit. Thanks for linking your theorization thread that's interesting.

Yep, ranking will keep you up anyway and it's honestly more deserving this way because if you fluke any of these tournaments then keep bombing out, other teams will be better and you don't deserve to be there anymore. Trust me, plenty of different areas to attack ESL's ranking and invite system at but this one isn't bad.

They already said they will, by my calculations they are going to almost double it (if everything from the big IEMs to FaceIt is counted) or even increase by 150% (if only Pro Tour aka IEM and EPL is considered). 4.25 Mil for Pro Tour and 5.5-6 overall turn to 11 Mil a year for the next 2 years.
