Liazz: "It's pretty f*cking annoying to play the only other Aussie team in the first round"

Fresh off their win in Atlanta, FlyQuest will face TALON in their RMR opening match.

Liazz expects a "fun match" against AZR's troops

FlyQuest have had a rough time during 2024, but the Aussies crowned their hard work with an international title at ESL Challenger Atlanta after their win against BIG in the grand final.

"We've been putting in a lot of work over the last six months to a year now, and it kind of felt like it was for naught," shared Jay "Liazz" Tregillgas. "Atlanta was pretty big for our confidence and things are looking good right now. We just have to ride that wave into the RMR."

During the media day in Shanghai, Liazz also spoke to HLTV about not repeating their previous Asia RMR woes, facing his friends in TALON in their opener, and taking a more relaxed approach to the tournament.

If you cannot see the Soundcloud embed, listen to the interview here.

You come to the RMR after just winning a LAN event. How is the team feeling right now?

We're feeling pretty good. It was a little bit rough before Atlanta for us as a team, but we talked about it. Atlanta was pretty big for our confidence and things are looking good right now. We just have to ride that wave into the RMR.

Talking about riding the wave. Obviously, you haven't had the best results So how much of a boost was that trophy for you?

Oh, it was massive. It was good because we've been putting in a lot of work over the last six months to a year now, and it kind of felt like it was for naught. It felt like we were putting in work and getting nothing from it, it was really discouraging.

Getting something in Atlanta was massive for us, even just reaching the grand final was huge, and then beating BIG was massive. Our team's confidence is high right now but I think what will matter for the RMR is our individual confidence as well, so we'll see how we do with that.

It was also your region's first international trophy since 2017. How did it feel to be the guy to break the long streak?

It was a good feeling. Obviously Atlanta wasn't a fucking S-tier tournament, but you know, a tournament's a tournament. It felt fucking awesome to lift an international trophy for the first time in my career and the first time for any of us, I think. It was a really good feeling.

Looking at the RMR. Under Grayhound, you missed out on a Major spot last time around. This time, you come in after winning a tournament and on a 14-match win streak on HLTV. Are you confident that that will not repeat this time around?

There were a few things that went into the last RMR. We just picked up Chris [dexter] and he was slowly integrating his system, which we as players weren't used to, and he also hadn't really called in the Asian scene for a while, so it was also different for him.

We put a fuck ton of stress on ourselves as well for that one. For this one, we're trying to be a little bit more relaxed with our approach. We're obviously very serious, but we've had a lot of time as a team to develop and that gives us confidence.

When you prepare really well, you don't have much to be nervous about, so I think we are confident about this one. But there's no real expectation for us. We're just gonna put our best foot forward and if we play like we did in Atlanta, we'll be fine.

This time there's also one more spot available. Does that make you feel a bit less pressure?

One hundred percent, it's a lot less pressure. It's really cutthroat and the way the system works is kind of bullshit right now, with RMRs being the main event. A lot of teams don't even care as much about the Major itself in the top 24 compared to the RMRs. I'm looking forward to that changing. But yeah, I think with three spots, it's a little bit more relaxed and we can breathe a little bit. It's good.

You're playing the opener against your friends in TALON. So how do you feel about that one?

It's pretty fucking annoying to play the only other Aussie team in the first round, but it'll be fun to play them. I've played Aaron [AZR] on and off for ages since he's had a couple of escapades. I played in a couple of teams back home in Australia against him, it's always fun. I wish they were on the other side of the bracket, but it is cool to verse them here.

Isn't RA rebranded Vici Gaming? I'm pretty sure a decade old org has more trophies than a team picked up a year ago, you're just being facetious

The majority of people employed, volunteering, and participating across the Esports industry are not professional players. You should really reflect on whether you are a prime example of the common public perception of online gamers is "young adult males with no social skills or life perspective".

Why? No matter the result, Australia will win. Let's be honest, you both would lose the first game in other scenarios.

If they were on the other side they would have to beat mongolz and that's not happening, so lower bracket for them is their only chance in either bracket

I hope they go 0-2, they come off as totally ungrateful people a lot of the time and they're actively stealing away potential CHN slots for a CHN major. Pretty scummy behavior but no one gives the same energy hating them like they hate Drillas, they're both pretty scummy Especially from the last place merchants themselves, every time they've been at a tier 1 event they just get single digits against actual teams and fly home with free HLTV points, VRS will hopefully end this

no they are not. Australia is a weak region just like china and they dont have their own RMRs so they get counted to Asia. Totally fair. I would even argue since Asia is so big and Australia only has one actual good team they are disadvantaged. But 10x worse are drillas which are a part of a region that has its OWN RMR region and they are actively dodging it and literally taking away Asian spots for their home major.

They're such unlikeable players, hope they lose now Instead of being respectful to the other teams that worked hard to qualify they're putting them down while they got a free invite to the RMR while doing nothing of note all year The actual nerve to complain about not having an easier path to the major while being given hand outs all year

Because he obviously wants the best chance of both teams qualifying, this matchup ensures one will be on the lower bracket whereas if they were in the opposite bracket there's a chance both advance. It is basic probability

dont pretend like you dont know its based on current valve ranking at the time they made the draw. Its always been like that. Its no different on some tournaments when to 2 NA teams end up having the play each other first match. Be Glad you dont have to face Mongolz opening match and have relatively the easiest bracket. That is of course you dont bomb out the first BO1.

They're extremely easy to dislike given their personalities and their desire to come last in every international It would be for the benefit of everyone else if they stepped aside and let the new blood in Asia have a chance instead of another guaranteed 0-3

So your solution to this apparent apparent problem is for them to retire and have a lesser au team get invites? If you can't beat your local competitors you're probably not gonna do much better against international teams lol. Put your hate boner away you fucking weirdo
