Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 Europe RMR BG2 extend winning streak against Spirit to secure Major spot
NiKo got the best of donk, beating him in 10 of their 14 duels on the decider map.
G2 edged past Spirit in a three-mapper that went to overtime on the Nuke decider to earn their spot at the Perfect World Shanghai Major. Spirit, now 2-2, will have to play in the final day of the European RMR for a chance to qualify.
The series kicked off on Spirit's Ancient pick, where the Russians had the opportunity to make a statement on the attack, but were punished by G2 when overextending in what ended up being a 6-6 half.
Danil "donk" Kryshkovets had a quiet map and his presence was felt only momentarily, when he had a big quad-kill to get within two of G2, 11-9, that could have sparked a response from his team. Instead, G2 instantly replied and continued to plow through on the T side to close it out 13-9.
G2 and Spirit played Mirage in all of their previous encounters and G2 won it every single time, which indicated that the series could be a short one if the trend continued. Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov made sure it didn't by going 15-0 before G2 could get a single kill on him in a 9-3 CT side.
After Spirit took Mirage 13-5, G2's five-game winning streak against Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov and company seemed secure when they hit match point at 12-8, but a flurry of mistakes allowed Spirit to get back into it.
Spirit's comeback could come as a bad omen for G2, whose only lost map out of 12 against the Russians before this match was a Nuke that went to overtime, but this time, the Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski-led squad held on.
Nikola "NiKo" Kovač largely got the better of donk on Nuke — and throughout the series — in a clash of titans, winning 10 of the 14 duels the two played on decider, but it was Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa's late-round heroics, including a 1vs2 clutch in the 29th round, that put the cherry on top in G2's 16-14 victory.
G2 remain Spirit's bête noire with this victory as it extends their streak to 6-0 in 2024, and it is a particularly special one for malbsMd, who will finally get his sticker introduced into the game for the first time as a Major rookie in Shanghai.
