Wildcard secure final Shanghai Major Elimination Stage spot over Passion UA

A marathon three-map affair went the way of stanislaw and company.

Wildcard fairytale run in Shanghai continues

Wildcard defeated Passion UA in a hard-fought three-map series (Inferno 13-6, Mirage 6-13, Ancient 16-13) to secure the last available Elimination Stage spot and become the fifth Americas team in the second phase of the Major.

The series was a high-octane affair with both callers opting for a fast-paced T side, but Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's troops eventually came out on top after making the most out of their experience.

"The pressure is for sure off now," said an ecstatic Tim "susp" Ångström in a broadcast post-match interview. "Our first goal was to make the Major. We're just going to go in there, play some games, and have some fun."

For Passion UA, this is a heartbreaking end to an otherwise stellar performance in Shanghai. The young Ukrainian team already upset the apple cart by making it to the Opening Stage over the likes of Astralis and can look back at their wins against Complexity and BIG on the Major stage.

"It's a very good result for us, we need to understand," Mikhaylo "Kane" Blagin said to HLTV in a post-match comment. "Before this tournament, we played just online games in EPL or CCT, it's tier-three, tier-two tournaments.

"People were thinking we're just onliners or that we're using radar [chuckles], but we really work hard and all we want is just to attend big tournaments. To have a chance to play with the best teams is all we want."

The series began on Inferno, where Wildcard put together a masterful 11-1 T side. They were visibly the better side and had Aran "Sonic" Groesbeek and susp to thank for bailing them out with three 1v2 situations to keep an insurmountable lead into the second half.

While Passion UA won the pistol and reduced the deficit to 6-11, Love "phzy" Smidebrant made his AWP sing with four kills in two rounds, got his team over the line, and moved the series to Mirage.

Mirage, Wildcard's usual permaban, didn't go the way of stanislaw's troops. They kept it close on the CT side and went into the second half just two rounds behind, but Passion UA turned on the style to take a dominant 13-6 win.

The decider was Ancient, which began and ended as a chaotic affair. Passion UA took another two-round lead into the second half before a highlight reel of individual moments followed as Nikita "jackasmo" Skyba clutched a 1v2 and helped turn a 2v4, which meant the game would be decided in overtime.

It was in added time that the lack of experience came back to bite Passion UA, who faltered in the dying stages of the game. stanislaw put up 27 kills and had some great calls toward the end to help his team bring the game over the line and secure an unlikely spot in the Elimination Stage.

Brazil and USA hard-carrying the Americas rn. 35 countries in the continent, and only 2 make it to the major. I hope we see 9Z back to good form soon so they can help us get more spots for the Americas.

True, but Argentina has 9Z, Bestia, and Krü, all of which made it to the RMR. Kru and Bestia are alright, and 9Z has a lot of potential. It's realistic to expect at least one of these teams to qualify in the next majors.

I assume they're primarily trying to find food for themselves. But right after that, setting up a professional CS2 team comes next on their list of priorities, as far as I know.

I don't know if it was the players' decision or the organization's, but they immediately became unsympathetic to me when they refused to shake hands with their opponents just because one of them was a Russian player (yesterday, against GamerLegion). Politics has no place in sports or esports. But if they stand by this so firmly, they shouldn't have played against them in the first place. They could have forfeited if this ideology was so important to them. Oh, of course, they wanted the win, but if they didn’t get it, shaking hands was out of the question. I find this incredibly repulsive. So glad that Wildcard win this one.

What kind of possible miscommunication could cause such a simple, routine task not to happen? In my opinion, the GL coach is simply intelligent enough not to make the situation worse.

How could you be this ignorant? FL4MUS explained that the Passion players believed that GL was sponsored by a Russian-backed gambling site. They weren't, and that's where the miscommunication lay. You are outraged by something that does not affect you.

Issue still stands. It shouldn't matter who backs the team. Its just plain un-sportsman like conduct. They are playing against the players not the backers...

Right . . . I was outraged when you were seething so badly that you think Passion UA became unsympathetic over something that does not affect you.

You could have argued that you believe it was the right decision not to shake hands, or that you think it’s fine for politics to seep into sports or esports. But saying “it doesn’t affect me” is a typical ignorant and short-sighted attitude. Firstly, it does affect me. Secondly, even if it didn’t, let me give you an example: A serial killer, who has nothing to do with you and whose existence you only know about from the news, does that make them sympathetic to you? They don’t impact your life, so it doesn’t matter what they do, right? Then again, I don’t know what I expect from someone born into a nation that is among the most ignorant in the developed world, yet somehow believes itself to be the smartest. Though, I suppose the two are connected.

Nice false equivalences and strawman. How does an organization that does not have its players shake hands with other players affect you? Your viewing experience? This is a genuine question because how an organization operates over something small should not deserve so much attention. Of course, what serial killers do should affect others, but you are comparing apples with oranges. This is a really trivial point. Also, I think you're touching the loud minority if you think the United States is the most ignorant in the developed world. There is a reason why we have certain systems to cater understanding to communities, and it is unfair to make such a generalization.

Your response genuinely surprised me, and you're right. I generalized and was clearly mistaken in your case, so sorry for that. Nevertheless, the basis of the argument remains the same. This does have an impact on both you and me. If, in similar cases, the audience doesn't express their disapproval, politics will increasingly infiltrate such events. In the long run, this will result in these events being dominated by political forces, ultimately making them unenjoyable.

Mature, fair, and agreed. I still think that the outrage over a mistake is unnecessary. If it was not a mistake, then I would agree that it would make the space less enjoyable. Have a good day <3
