Valve sets new invite requirements for T1 and T2 events, adjusts seeding and wildcard rules *

The developer has imposed much stricter requirements when it comes to wildcard invitations.

Update 09:35 : Valve fixes "mistake" in Wildcard requirements

In a subsequent update to the rulebook, Valve has eased the new requirement for a Wildcard invite, which now has to be ranked lower than 12 on the Global VRS list rather than on all lists.

Valve has released a set of changes to its "Tournament Operation Requirements" document, most notably to the rules surrounding seeding, wildcards and invitations.

The developer has increased the minimum number of invites for a tier-one event from 16 to 20. At the same time, tier-two events can now only invite teams ranked lower than 12th in the global standings, four places lower than the previous requirement.

For events in 2027 and beyond, the announcement date has been set to 22 months before the tournament's main event, down from 24 months. And the deadline for tournament organizers to publish the additional information for tier-one and wildcard events is now set to ten months before the main event, down from 12 months.

One of the biggest aspects of this rulebook update surrounds tournament seeding. Rather than resorting to the VRS used for invites to determine seeding, a tournament can simply use the version of the VRS specified in an event's Additional Information announcement. This is of special importance as event invites are often handed out months in advance.

Valve has also made the wildcard requirements much more restrictive. A roster is only eligible for one such invite if it is ranked lower than 12 on all VRS lists (including regional lists) and fulfills at least one of the following requirements:

a) It includes at least 3 players who individually were members of a top 12 Roster on an Invite VRS List at any time during the preceding 6 months.
b) It has placed first or second place in any Tournament, of equal or lesser tier than the one issuing the invite, during the preceding 6 months.

Rather than having to disclose the broader geographical region where the event will take place (North America, West Europe, Southeast Asia, etc.), tournament organizers must now only publish the visa region where the competition will be held (USA, Schengen, China, etc.).

I guess it helps TOs with planning events 22 months in advance. Especially considering there was that recent news where a TO lost the venue they were planning on using (completely forgotten what event that was for).

PGL's event in Kraków scheduled for January 2027 is the one. But yeah, it's probably a mix of that and also helping the orgs, with exact location deadline becoming shorter too (although 10 months is still a decent amount, realistically).

Good update, it will make tier 2 tournaments more useful as a launch pad for t1 instead of just another tournament with top10 teams winning

Historically the schengen zone or the contract of schengen is a pretty big deal. Makes life easier out here in the eu.

Ok so, if i understand correctly: For a tournament to be considered Tier 1 in the future, the event must have 20 teams at minimum. Tier 2 events cannot directly invite a team to their event thats inside the Top 12 in VRS. TOs have more time before needing to announce specific aspects of their tournaments. A more updated version of the VRS can be used for seeding when an event takes place. A Wildcard team is now 3 top 12 players from the last 6 months, rather than 3 top 8 plauers from the last 12 months. Sounds to me like not much will change from this. Visa regions is a huge W, rather than just a massive continent sized region that could mean anything. Teams will be able to know what visas they will need months in advanced to play a specific tournament.

good change for tournament invites it seems, but the wildcard rules are ridiculously restrictive, what is this top 12 nonsense, it's just the same teams all over, just let orgs invite underdogs, no?

wildcard team != underdog wildcard invite is made for teams made of tier1 players that have low vrs rank, if they reach #12 on any vrs they should be able to just qualify normally

nobody really does this though, all the teams are buying 3-player cores anyway, so what's even the point then

just because everyone buys cores doesnt doesnt mean its bad, teams that buy cores are spending fortunes, for instance, if gentle mates were to enter cs with siuhy+ash without the 3dmax core, they could build a wildcard core with siuhy for much cheaper than 3dmax core

well, let's see if this rule gets any use at all in the end, but imo getting some free underdog invites with minimal restrictions would be good to bring some fresh blood to the tournaments, so it's a shame the current system doesn't allow that at all

Can someone explain this? "Valve has also made the wildcard requirements much more restrictive. A roster is only eligible for one such invite if it is ranked lower than 12 on all VRS lists (including regional lists) and fulfills at least one of the following requirements:" Cause it seems like the next line says the opposite? Am I stupid? Also not sure what the regional list means, is it only if you invite regionally or is it also if you invite globally? THANK YOU :DDDDDDD

Just means that you have to be lower than 12th globally and regionally to qualify for a wildcard invite. This update will ensure that only tier 1.5 or tier 2 teams get wildcard invites. The requirements to be a wildcard are that you must have 3 players who were in teams ranked 12th or lower in the last 6 months. This is a change from 3 players from teams ranked top 8 in the last 12 months. You can also qualify for a wildcard invite if you have won or placed second in a ranked event. So, for example, BC.Game can get a wildcard invite to an event after winning CCT.

"a) It includes at least 3 players who individually were members of a top 12 Roster on an Invite VRS List at any time during the preceding 6 months." this is what confuses me tho, Also the regional thing seems weird, so if a team is top 10 in asia but like 60th global it cant be invited even to a global event, not a regional one, despite meeting all the other criteria? just seems odd if thats the case

It means that if 3 different top 12 rank teams drop a single player each after the major (say for example degster, Snax and Staehr), then another team picks up all 3 of those guys, they would then be eligible for wildcard invites for the next 6 months (ie until the following major ay the end of the year). Basically it is a way to allow teams to have a chance to play in tier 1 tournaments without picking up an existing core, since they would not have a VRS standing and would otherwise have few opportunities to qualify. If th TO does regional invites for a global tournament, they still have to invite the top team or teams from that region first. If Asia has a single regional slot, you would only get the 10th rank Asia team if the top 9 all said no.

Does a minimum of 20 teams at Tier 1 event mean that almost every tournament will have some kind of play-in stage?

If i'm following correctly, NIP in particular can be invited via wildcard invite, this being because arrozdoce and ewjerkz have been top 9 in the last 6 months, adding sjush and snapi who were alredy eligble for the wildcard invite
