Five out of six advancing teams likely to skip YaLLa LAN as qualifier shakes up MRQs

One of the final VRS-ranked events in Europe before Austin Major invites are sent out had far more on the line than spots at the $600,000 LAN.

The team list for YaLLa Compass Qatar has been filled following the conclusion of the two-day, 12-team qualifier, with Complexity, BetBoom, ENCE, Partizan, Nemiga, and 9 Pandas earning spots at the LAN scheduled to run from April 16-19.

However, the team list for the $600,000 event, which also features Astralis among the invited sides, will likely see several teams drop out and need to be replaced before it starts because of its dates overlapping with the BLAST.tv Austin Major's Regional Major Qualifiers.

MRQ on the line

The Qatar qualifier was one of the final VRS-ranked events in Europe before invites are sent out for the Austin Major and its MRQs on April 7, with only the BetBoom LanDaLan 2 qualifier and Tipsport Cup Spring Finals yet to play out.

You can find a prediction of what the April 7 ranking and Major invites would look like here.

As such, stakes were high for several teams playing the qualifier, particularly those at the bottom or just below the cut-off in the Europe MRQ standings, while a spot at the YaLLa event was a secondary prize or not one at all.

Complexity could have double-dipped if they leapfrogged M80 in our April 7 Americas ranking, which would have earned COL a Stage 2 invite to the Major and allowed them to play in Qatar.

Johnny "JT" Theodosiou's side put up a flawless 5-0 record in their round-robin, best-of-one group, including a 13-0 over Imperial Valkyries and only one close match against Metizport, but even with that effort are currently projected to finish 14 points short of M80.

Five out of six qualified teams likely to skip Qatar

That means Complexity would have to go to North America to play in the MRQ, scheduled for April 15-17, which overlaps with the dates for YaLLa Qatar.

The same goes for Astralis, Nemiga, and BetBoom, who need to remain in Europe for the MRQ that will run from April 14-17, and is very likely the case for ENCE and 9 Pandas who now sit just above the MRQ cut-off after going 4-1 and 3-2, respectively, in their groups.

Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander's side started the qualifier out of MRQ contention but earned just enough points with their final win over ECLOT to give them a provisional spot.

9 Pandas also beat Metizport in their last match to secure the LAN spot — which they will likely have to skip — and put the Swedes in the danger zone as the final team at the cut-off, with ECLOT having a very small, outside chance to steal it away if they win the Tipsport LAN.

Partizan are the only one out of the six teams that qualified who aren't in MRQ contention, earning themselves a LAN berth with a 4-1 record in Group B that featured wins over BetBoom and ECLOT and a loss to ENCE.

Metizport, meanwhile, are left in particularly dire straits after losing maps in overtime to Complexity and 9 Pandas and getting blown out by Nemiga, leaving them on the brink of falling out of MRQ contention mere days after they fell short of qualifying for PGL Astana to Ninjas in Pyjamas.

Imperial Valkyries' 0-5 record in the qualifier — which featured two 0-13 defeats and a combined 12 rounds across their other three games — added further misery to the team's dismal run of results in non-women's only tournaments since the start of the year, dispeling any remaining vestige of hope that might have lingered since their BLAST Bounty game against NAVI.

can you explain this? I didn't see parivision mentioned once in the article, and I don't see them on the Major invites prediction page either?

PARIVISION were in serious trouble with this event, because they can't gain point anymore and are at the bottom of the MRQ invites zone Thanks to the results of this event, PARIVISION are still in. If Passion UA, ECLOT, PARTIZAN were to go on a massive winning streak, they'd steal PARIVISION spot 100% due to a hefty sum of money YaLLa were offering.

Will teams face consequences for this? Playing in a qualifier for an event that they know they will likely have to skip. I don't like the idea of punishing players for competing but I also don't think that this is something that should be allowed in the future

To be fair this whole situation arose in the first place because YaLLa themselves fucked up on the invite rules which led to YaLLa Compass Winter getting axed from the rankings and needing to revamp the whole system altogether. With that being said, the qualifier would have still played out with the same dates and BLAST/Valve and YaLLa gambled on a wholly different setup whereas YaLLa gets the invites for the top teams while the teams skipping YaLLa were the ones going to MRQ. That didn't happen as Doha was in the middle of the MRQ, Melbourne AND potentially Monterrey swing of events before BLAST ultimately relocated Rivals to their studios. EF literally just dropped out of Melbourne because their travel schedule would have been Bucharest to Doha to Melbourne to Malta/Turkey (office or home) then to Astana before going back to back with Dallas and then the Austin Major AND Xantares is dealing with stomach issues as the team themselves are also burned out and unable to refine their stratbook. TLDR Schedule is too compressed and while the teams would love to play in Doha, everyone gambled on the wrong teams to make each event with the invites and ESL, BLAST, YaLLa and to a degree Valve are all to blame for this while the teams just play the system to try and get into the Major. This is why the RMRs positioning right in front of the Majors were good as you had a dedicated space for the Major and it's qualification process (outside of CQs being early on in the season obviously) and didn't need to worry about the Major Qualifiers being 2 months in advance in the middle of a congested stretch of games.

Basically those teams never had any intentions of playing the main event, just farming points? If that’s the case, that’s pretty shitty but we only have our great system VRS to blame. So those teams that participated and didn’t make it should just be invited right? With Imperial fe and GTZ battling for that last spot.

Well, Yalla had all the time in the world to postpone the event to be after MRQ. They chose it themselves. Or they thought actual top teams will accept their invites and they will have a tournament full of teams that already have direct invites to major.

you say like that's an easy thing to do, they probably already had contracts with a lot of parties for the dates they announced, the MRQ dates were announced after

MRQ dates were announced in late january. Unless they expected better teams to show up, they had 2 months to work something out.

yalla announced their tournament in october 2024 x.com/YaLLaCompass/status/18513233183828.. MRQ dates announced 3 months later, you think it's easy to change everything that was already setup (agreed and paid for) in a span of 2 months?

No, it's not easy. But it had to be done if they wanted to avoid exactly this situation. It could have been none or less teams however, but as it stands only EF, VP, 3dmax, Mibr, Pain and Partizan can play without any worries. Probably far from the level Yalla expected. Again, I think they actually expected to have more teams with secured invites to major, there's 16 of those and only 12 spots in the tournament after all with 600k on the line with half of it even being club share, but alas.

coinflip between them and GTZ for whoever gets a spot. ok I realized 6 teams arent making. So two teams who went 0-5 can actually make the LAN lol.

And the funny thing is that one of the teams that didn't make it probably won't accept replacement invite, as either Metizport or Eclot will have the last spot at MRQ

might as well scrap the closed qualifiers and just see which of the highest ranked VRS teams even want to show up. I do wonder what the valve rules state for such situations tho. Do they have a choice between just inviting based on VRS or does GTZ and ImpV actually make the event winning 0 matches and get a bunch of points for playing a couple of LAN bo3s.

They don't get points for simply playing LAN, the parameter is LAN wins specifically. But they will get points for last place prize money.

ok yeah you are right I even checked through some of the code at it distinctly says LANwins instead of just LAN matches. idk why I assumed it was just the LAN match itself that got you a ton of points mb.

so there are 6 open slots in the lan now with these teams dropping out, Imperial and GTZ will get in not winning a single match? lmao

Potentially 6. Astralis also have MRQ to play. And the funny thing is that there's only 5 replacements as either Eclot or Metizport will be playing MRQ

the most sound and reasonable option for MRQs and Yalla Compass - to move NA and EU MRQs one day early (to kickoff on April 13 - online event, who cares) and for Yalla (if it is really possible) to set end date on April 20 (can't quite understand why they are having a final on saturday since the Ramadan ended already). Since MRQs are not offline event like RMRs were and there is no quite the event competition on these dates (does anybody really thinks that coL and Astralis will make it into final LMAO?), Yalla is still S-tier tournament according to Valve TO rulebook (though there is no massive Top-10 competition) and great option for Tier 2 teams to participate on LAN which will always be useful (for VRS points as well). However, don't find it really possible since Blast is (rightfully) considering itself as a major Tier-1 TO and won't be making space for a smaller TO.
