The VRS impact of IEM Dallas

GamerLegion and HEROIC gained some ground at the final Big Event before the Austin Major.

Following the conclusion of IEM Dallas on Sunday, where Vitality swept MOUZ 3-0 to take home a sixth consecutive title, the full impact of the event on the Valve Regional Standings can now be seen.

Vitality sweep MOUZ to win IEM Dallas and make it six trophies in a row

Most teams in attendance lost points but gained places or held on to their ranking due to the scaling system the VRS employs, using the top five teams in each sub-category to then weigh the teams below. Several increased their bounty collected to keep the shift to a minimum, with MOUZ notably losing eight points but moving up two spots to second.

GamerLegion and HEROIC were the only other teams to gain points, with the latter benefitting the most after being absent from tier-one LAN competition since ESL Pro League and beating Aurora and FaZe upon their return.

That was enough to push them up three places into the top 15, while GamerLegion's top-six placement and wins over 3DMAX and G2 earned them eight points and a jump up three spots to ninth.

Falcons dropped to fourth after losing 57 points, while The MongolZ clung onto fifth over Aurora thanks to their win in the quarter-finals.

FaZe came away from the tournament as the clear loser, dropping three spots and losing 122 points after tallying their only win against BC.Game and suffering losses to Liquid and HEROIC.

Here's how the full top 30 looks in HLTV's live implementation of the ranking — which includes ongoing events and preliminary placements and points earnings from them — as of Monday:

Explainer: The table below showcases the teams' standing in each sub-factor of the VRS: Bounty collected (BCOL), Bounty offered (BOFF), Opponent network (NETW), LAN wins (LANW) and the final head-to-head adjustment (H2H). Values in bold represent the top five earners in each factor.

The VRS formula begins with 400 base points, which are spread among the first four categories in our table so that they add up to the total.

EZ major win for vitality

Vitality beats teams and does not win points (only 3 points for 5 wins) but the others lose. Mouz wins 4 but lose 1 (-6 points for it). So, it seems like teams lost points but many did not gain points due to point system. Valve system can be less punishing for the lower teams if they lose games against higher teams.

Bruh, the VRS is correct. Why would Vitality earn a ton of points for beating teams of less caliber. It's setup so 1st place will not run away with the all the points as the season goes on. You don't get a ton of points for beating a team you should win. If they ever popped to second they would be right back in first as their wins would mean more....

The only world where they dont win is if the Bo3 Finals fucks them over, Their lan win streak is also at risk because of the Bo1 is Stage 1/2/3

currently the only team with a chance to beat them is Falcons.

It's still crazy Vitality only gain like +3 points for the whole event. I don't know how i feel about VRS system even when they win the game they lose points. I get the points decade after certain weeks or months but even it still doesn't make sense. It's like there is certain limit or gap you cannot break even after winning.

Well, you are correct. If you read the vrs document you can see there is a max point score of 2200. This makes sense, you don't want vitality at the top for 6 months straight because they won a lot of tournaments. VRS is supposed to be a ranking of current form, not a ranking of achievements. That would stifle competition if they could just keep banking points endlessly. When you're at the top, you have to constantly defend. Fair.

i think so! there's been some insane stuff over the years man. i'm kinda sad about this major. first ever m80 stickers, but gamerlegion didn't make it, so no PR stickers. can probably tell my favourite two teams haha. but yeah, astralis and gamerlegion not being there feels kind of crazy, especially after astana + dallas. both teams did well (outside of GL in astana with the exception of the spirit match LOL). i think eternal fire missed the shanghai major as well, no? they lost to i think 3dmax, sashi and astralis, didn't get stickers.

Vitality win 3 points for winning the tournament? Xd

Look at the point difference between #1 and #2 (and the rest), this is what matters, the h2h result for them is at 128 (added from the max 2000 points) this number is unprecedented, the most I've seen looking through last year rankings was 2051 from spirit in June 2024. 2128 is nuts.

When the system works too well that the big vrs gain/loss that usually comes from upsets doesn't exist.

Very weird...So despite their replacements both falcons, mouz AND the mongolz lost points...I don't get it.

There's a correlation between these 3 teams, they all lost to Vitality in important matches, hence why Vitality have so much points in the h2h stat.

I might be wrong but isn't it fucked up that vitality only has 10% more points than MOUZ despite literally winning everything ?

That's how the feedback loop has been designed. If you look at vrs predictions each match you'd realise vitality would even lose -1 if they win against a lower ranked team. Vitality only wins a meagre amount if they win against ranked 2 or 3 and it falls off a cliff hard after which. It is so that ranked 2 and 3 teams can scale up fast and "catch up" so that there is no historical inflation, the rankings should show short run to medium run hierarchy of teams not long run.

So Falcons and Mouz lose points despite being in the semis and final of the tournament. If they get upset for example in the quarters it is going to be brutal omg.
