G2 embarrass Spirit 13-1 on Ancient to secure BLAST London playoff berth

Disjointed play and sloppy Counter-Strike saw the Cologne champions miss out on an arena berth.

G2 are through to the quarter-finals of BLAST Open London after reverse-sweeping a lackluster Spirit in the final match of the group stage, recovering from a narrow loss on Mirage (11-13) with wins on Dust2 (16-13) and Ancient (13-1).

It will be the first arena appearance for G2 since March and since Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač took over leadership duties during the off-season, with the Bosnian in good spirits when talking to the analyst desk after the match.

"We changed a lot of players in the last six months, even TaZ got a chance to play," he laughed. "It wasn't easy and it's still not easy, but it feels really good because we've been working really hard lately since we got new players during the summer break.

"A lot of hard work paid off, for now at least, we are improving from event to event. Of course we could have done better at some events, but for now I'm really happy with the progress and I'm happy that it's going this way."

Spirit drew first blood in the series after G2 abused B early on Mirage for a 5-2 lead, with Danil "donk" Kryshkovets and Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov combining to win out the half for their side before the Russian phenom took over in the second half.

G2 won the pistol and briefly took the lead, but were at the behest of phenomenal multi-fragging by donk, who opened up bombsites single-handedly, bailed Spirit out of a few disadvantages, and combined with Myroslav "zont1x" Plakhotia to recover a 3v5 in round 24 to lock in a narrow victory.

A far better start to Dust2 saw G2 up 6-0 before Spirit got a look in, and that lead was soon extended to 8-2 as sloppy mistakes, misplays, and missed grenades started stacking up for the Russian team.

A slight recovery at the end of the half did little to help Spirit after Nikita "HeavyGod" Martynenko won a 1v3 clutch to grab G2 their fourth pistol, and a subsequent conversion had them up 10-4 with Spirit visibly out of it and looking ready to throw in the towel. A late rally, again powered by individual heroics by donk and a few multi-kills by zont1x and Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov, saw Spirit take back control, but it was not a confident recovery as mistakes continued to plague the team and frustration was evident on both sides of the server.

sAw rallies the troops with timeout

The turning point for G2 came at 10-9, when Eetu "sAw" Saha gave his team a reality check during a timeout.

"Guys, I don't know if your 'W' key is frozen or something, but we should play the game, no?" he said. After hearing assent from his team, he added: "Okay, can we fuck them now?"

Matúš "MATYS" Šimko came out of that timeout inspired, finding several impactful multi-kills on Catwalk and out Middle to revive G2 in overtime. Spirit looked checked out, both on camera and on the server, and it showed as G2 closed out Dust2 before stomping through the Ancient decider.

A single, triple kill round by zont1x is all that separated Spirit from losing the map 0-13, with G2 dominating en route to securing their LAN berth.

The end for zont1x?

Reports and rumors pointed to zont1x being out of Spirit after Esports World Cup with Andrey "tN1R" Tatarinovich set to replace him, but the team went into BLAST Open London with the same lineup.

Excellence from sh1ro and donk wasn't enough to net the team a playoff berth at the first point of asking against FURIA, but it seemed out of the question that the Cologne and BLAST Bounty Season 2 champions would miss out on the LAN stage entirely in what was likely their last ride.

It is the reality we live in now, however, with Spirit looking disjointed for large parts of the series and donk's best efforts not enough to make up for the number of sloppy errors made by the team ranked first in the world on the VRS. Whether this was truly zont1x's last ride in Spirit is left to be seen, but there is no doubt that if it was, this is not the way he wanted to go out.

i'm not worried that tn1r will be good in any position, but they bring him to get firepower and you can be sure he won’t be hard anchor like zont1x zweih will be even worse, that's for sure

He had mixed positions for most of the time he was dominating on Heroic. When they tried to take him out of his lurker positions on T side and put him in star positions, his performance cratered. He's gonna be a perfect replacement for zontix so Spirit can find more impact from lurks.

While chopper does have flashes of brilliance — he legitimately outcalled Na`Vi at the major (although with how terrible Na`Vi have been this year, it isn't that much of an achievement), overall I just haven't seen Spirit performing many setup rounds — 90% of the time the call is simply "donk go kill".

thats just pure cope from you sh1ro is 3rd/4th this year against ropz zontix departs from the team and ? have you seen his stats at cologne, bounty and ewc ? why is it any different this tournament ? yes chopper is a solid igl, one of the best in tier 1, if he's not "solid" at all then I dare you to give me 6 better igls well maybe not but he's still an insane rifler, in bad positions, and had 1.11 rating at blast bounty finals against the best teams in the world

Better igls this year: Fallen, apex, blitz, brollan, maybe aleksi. For me, he's like karrigan, good calls but simply not good enough for tier1. Yes, he has his 1in100 games, where he goes godmode, but most of the time he is dead last with little to no participation. I agree with everything else you've said though

I reaaaally wonder why you hate Vitality. And I checked your profile, you seem to hate mouz as well, what a surprise. You know I'd be on your side if we weren't talking about CS, but if it happens you're hating teams/players for things they aren't responsible for, then it's a shame. Ok maybe except one player because of some tweets

He does have a good team, they just didn't turn up against G2. Zont1x and sh1ro honestly did alright, it was mainly Zweih and Chopper that struggled + let's be honest, that Ancient game was abysmal from all players - nobody can be singled out there.

bro are you even listening to your own words? they just don't turn up against G2, they don't turn up against any top10 team when donk is not playing well, that dust2 was so winnable yet shiro 0 impact again, zweih is past radar user with 0 gamesense and chopper's calls were as usual, you act like donk has team when he makes them look decent by own impact, today proved it, they are just trash

They literally won two tournaments back-to-back with this same team, including Cologne. That doesn't change just because the players aren't showing up, it's the overall consistency of the team isn't found yet because it's still a relatively new and untapped roster. Yeah, donk is donk but I love how the goalposts shift when they are now all of sudden beaten.

I mean he's not wrong, even if you watch Cologne they always had situations when they made lots of mistakes and were saved by donk going absolutely nuts to carry them. BLAST was more of entire team's work tho, but that happens so fucking rarely with Spirit, that's their problem.

Sure, I'm not saying that this team isn't flawed but winning back-to-back tournaments and being a Top 3 team is still worth something. Chopper's system has always been to play around donk and if teams can abuse that, then that's a fatal flaw in Chopper's system, not the team itself. On paper, Spirit still have amazing individuals, and even the losses are still hard-fought, they just didn't turn up on Ancient today... That hit them as a shock more than anything else. To imply that this team can no longer win tournaments is not something I can agree with, they're just being studied and countered, like every other team on top right now.

KennyS is a Major MVP winner. So is JW and Device, who's a two-time Major MVP winner... sh1ro has 4 MVP's, 3 of them are bronze and one of them is a studio prestige MVP from 2021 COVID-19 times. sh1ro's primary merit in his insane consistency, numerous trophies (including the Major) and amazing Top 10 placements, but as an individual, KennyS, FalleN, JW and even GuardiaN absolutely dwarf sh1ro in that department. sh1ro dominates the other candidates in EVP's, but they also didn't exist until 2016... past the prime of the other candidates, so that's an unfair metric to go by.

Trophies are also team achievements, whereas MVP's are individual achievements. Also Adren's only Major accomplishment is being a Major MVP + he doesn't AWP, so that comparison does not work.

+1 KennyS literally defined the blueprint for the AWP'ers we have now and broke the game with the AWP until he and the AWP itself was nerfed. So yeah... not including him in the GOAT AWP discussion is like not including GTR in the GOAT lurker discussion. EDIT: Forgot to +1.

KennyS made the big green OP... That's the point. He singlehandedly redefined the AWP meta. And you don't include him in the GOAT discussion and instead include m0NESY? Who's only been playing in tier 1 since 2022...? Sure, I'll give you s1mple but that's the only arguably credible candidate you have. It's an odd opinion to have that most definitely is not the majority.

Top 5 player: Chokes in arenas and playoffs. 1.03 vs top 5 and 1.04 vs top 10 in playoffs, 0.98 vs top 5 and 0.99 vs top 10 in arena (sh1ro). Sh1ro is a tier 2 and group stage farmer who crumbles under pressure. If HLTV list would only be about playoffs and arena rating, sh1ro would at best be top 15-20 and that's generous. He'd probably have a lower rating without donk on his team and zont1x being a solid playoff performer. Top 2 anchor: Maybe. Zont1x is underrated but I think HeavyGod has a better case for top 2 anchor right now. Ropz #1, HeavyGod #2, and then #3 is between mezii and zont1x. However, zont1x is not a top 5 lurker. He does struggle some on the T side and half the game is played on that side. He did struggle at this event, but overall he is the only consistently solid player on donk's team. Solid IGL: Chopper defenders can never explain why he is "solid" and I am sure you are no different. His strats are bad and he gets exposed too easily in games with equal firepower. He is a tier 2 IGL at best. Future star: zweih has potential, but that future potential doesn't help donk right now, so how does his possible future potential matter now?

I mean, yeah. CS is still a team game afterall. Superstars like (prime) S1mple, Donk, Zywoo, (prime) NiKo might be able to win games alone, but that's mostly against weak opponents and also doesn't happen too often. Even as one of the best players in the world you're still dependent on your team to provide some kind of help to win.

Cope with what they lost to G2 played better doesn’t change the fact that it’s a horrible system they got going on imagine working at 12am because you scheduling sucks many teams already agree hence why many aren’t attending because it’s mostly online the pay sucks and the scheduling sucks.

Back in 2022. Doesn't matter anymore. Shox was also a top 6 player in 2016, then 3 years later he was washed when he joined ZywOo. Chopper is no different. Without donk, chopper would still be playing in tier 2.

But to say his career only exists because of donk is wrong, no? He made hundreds of thousands of prize money before donk. Yeah he wouldn't be at the top of CS without him but I'm sure he would still have a well established career as a good CIS igl. Shoxies career doesn't "only" exist because of Zywoo!

I still dont think G2 is strong as current team but Spirit is on way of Navi. They will be weaker after zontix's leave and will put more mass on donk's shoulders. The fall of Spirit.

Nah adding TN1R gives more aggression and firepower to Spirit and another potential carry if donk ias having a off day, zontix this last year was very underwhelming compared to his first year, probably teams have a way better read on his playing style making him more predictable.

hltv.org/stats/players/7716/chopper?star.. Many top teams have same problem. Who will solve it first, will probably "win a lottery". Because there are not infinite amount of decent IGLs that can also frag. Zweih has not prooved he can play T1 so far imo. He is not even as good as magixx imo.

Will someone, an analyst or whatever, point out the fact that teams can use a very powerful tool against spirit (especially when they play ct) : making donk push and tilt? I feel like it's the umpteenth time they lose after he's being setup by his opponents and noone calls for an adaptation. Yesterday donk was having another brilliant BO3, until G2 came with a clear plan on ancient : take the fight to him. He became the main weak link because noone in Spirit decided it was worth adapting. Then it was too late : he was fully on tilt. Not only others have the step up, but the most important point for them as a team is that they have to manage him too. However congrats to G2, they played good even on the first two maps, and malbs was an absolute joy to watch on the third map.

You're missing the point. They were obviously bugged by the departure of zont1x, they didn't want to play this game at all. No communication, no teamplay, it was a normal pug for them without using any strats. They just rushed to end it fast
