A behind-the-scenes dispute over what lineup FaZe is allowed to field has led to the team forfeiting the first match in Stockholm.

ESL's rulebook prohibits FaZe from playing with Twistzz instead of rain

FaZe have decided to forfeit their first ESL Pro League Stage 2 match against G2 just hours before it was scheduled to begin, according to ESL.

Neither the tournament organizer nor the team explained the reasoning, but HLTV knows that it came in the aftermath of a dispute between the two sides over what lineup FaZe is allowed to use at the event.

Following the decision to replace Håvard "⁠rain⁠" Nygaard with Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken, the lineup FaZe arrived with at ESL Pro League only includes two out of the five players that featured on the July 7 Valve Regional Standings, the ranking used for invites to the event.

ESL's General Rules and Roster Restrictions rulebooks require teams to retain at least three out of five players (or "a majority") from the invitation ranking:

ESL Pro Tour CS General Rules, Rule 2.28

Teams invited based on the Valve Regional Standings must retain at least three out of the five core players listed in the VRS on the Invite Date.

ESL Pro Tour CS Roster Restrictions, Rule 2.4

Once a participant plays for the first time in a qualifier, their lineup has to contain a majority of that first lineup until the end of the main event, throughout all qualifiers and stages of the event. This also implies that an organisation that tried and failed to qualify with one team is not allowed to sign a new team to still take part in the event.

The above lineup restriction also applies for participants that were invited to the event or a later stage of the qualifiers, in that case the default lineup of the participant at the time of the invitation or a specific lineup named in context with the invitation is relevant. Invited participants are considered the same as if they had played throughout the entire qualifier process up until the stage that they have been invited to.

The starting roster FaZe submitted for the tournament includes rain and it would have satisfied the majority rule, but the rule would be broken once he was replaced as planned with Twistzz, who is listed as a substitute.

Questions remain why the situation wasn't resolved earlier when FaZe's intent to use Twistzz was made clear.

HLTV has reached out to FaZe and ESL for a comment.

This is false Rain will need to play. They would only be allowed to sub him with sub players submitted by the deadline and even then I believe they are still required to maintain the core in the server unless otherwise permitted via an emergency exception.

there is many many many many horrible decisions but I feel like I can sum it up by saying they had 20 players signed at the same time. (not a joke btw) Evil Geniuses (main team, even though they werent the best EG team) EG Black (the best team) EG White (washed players who would never make EG main) EG Gold (Womens team which didnt win anything or do well) They also I think had some bench players so more like 21-23 players signed. before all that they had a team that literally could have won a major (ex-nrg which was better than astralis at berlin but choked) once tarik retired they just fucked every single roster move forever. Best part of all of this? They won the valorant major equivalent and then benched their best player and fucked up their entire valorant roster too.

I will add to the EG lore with the Valo side of things. Team won Worlds. Then they all got offered new contracts worth half or sometimes less then what they were currently getting paid. Everyone but 1 player left after that. League player Danny left the org mid spilt because of lack of support from management (easy way to write it) and the who CS arm of it was lets sign all of NA and see what we can do. They had a team in each tier of CS and still did nothing with it. They were so bad they were being reviewed over the partner slot at pro league with how bad they were.

CAC and EPL invite is based on July 7th which FaZe core was still rain, s1mple, elige. I think ESL did want to go through with it even bending the rule for FaZe but then maybe somone or valve realized that the core now is way different than the one invited so they are scrambling on what to do. I guess FaZe argument was that twistzz is a sub so hes not part of the core but valve and vrs dont see sub they only see cores and since core is different they might say no and punish ESL, so ESL decide that FaZe cant play this event for now.

issue here is the VRS core at the time of the invite being the team from the major, because it was before this season started. bringing broky back changed 1 player and kicking elige changed 2. subbing rain for twistzz would make it 3 changes on the server, which isn't supposed to happen.

Honestly kinda seems like Faze tried to blackmail ESL. ESL loses out on the biggest match of the broadcast if they don't let Faze use the new lineup. And they potentially have to pay Faze a "club share" for the privilege. ESL must be fucking pissed.
