EWC to expand in 2026 with 32 teams, $2 million and open LAN qualifier

The Saudi Arabian tournament will more than double in size and length compared to the last two editions.

The organizers of the Esports World Cup have announced more details about the Counter-Strike 2 portion of next year's edition of the Saudi Arabian festival, unveiling a sizable expansion of the format.

The main part of the competition will double in attendance, from 16 to 32 teams, and feature a $2 million prizepool, a $750,000 increase compared to 2025.

With that will come an overall change in format spanning an extra week in the calendar, as was clear from the first announcement of the tournament which revealed it would take place from August 10-23.

Previously, 16 teams played a single-elimination bracket, but in 2026 the competition will start with a double-elimination group stage with four groups of eight teams, followed by a 16-team playoff bracket.

Additionally, a non-BYOC LAN open qualifier with support of up to 128 teams will be held in Riyadh from August 7-9 to determine four of the 32 participating teams.

Most of the remainder will come from the Valve Regional Standings as of June 2026, with 21 coming from the Global ranking, two from each of South America, North America and Asia. The final spot is reserved for the winner of Asian Champions League 2026.

yeah thats why I was excited cause maybe EWC would be different. Now thinking about it probably not, even if it was a better time in the calendar theres too many tourneys going on, thought it would attract more than the predecessors but since money isnt a problem I guess not even if it is produced by esl and has more viewers etc

They haven't announced all partnerships though, so it could still be Counterstrike (and other stuff). It is also worth noting that this National-thing will only happen every other year and not annually like the EWC. And it is atleast planned to travel, with only the first being in RIyadh

Disagree - It's great to see more events in the Middle East. For EU and Africa viewers of cs matches the timezone is great. The last EWC had some incredible maches with Aurora, Furia, Mongolz, insane comebacks and great highlights - also it's a global esports festival that's promoting gaming as a whole and now a signficant event on the global esports calendar.

We're still regurgitating this narrative? They don't give a fuck what you think of them. At all. In Germany, Saudi Arabia is one of our strongest economic allies, with deep energy ties and extensive business relations. The US Air Force sponsors US shooter games with hopes of luring dumb penilles gamers into joining the army and a 50k bonus for joining ICE and ripping babies out mother's arms. Wtf are we doing here

What Saudi are doing in Germany is called soft power bro, they don't give a f*uck about Germany either . And stop with the us army narrative too, considering the average IQ of American with their educational system, going to the army isn't that bad

Saudi Arabia also has strong economic relations with Finland in the ICT sector, as Finland has expertise there. That's not what soft power is. Soft power is the exertion of power by non-military means, like USAID projects in Africa, the influence of Hollywood and the promotion of the NFL around the world to spread American ideals and spread influence. That's soft power. Germany's relations with KSA are international trade agreement and based on mutual interests and economic interests. The fact that the US Army preys on the vulnerability and ignorance of young gamers who love shooters makes it even more deplorable and disgusting. Saudi choosing to invest more in sports and esports is a welcome change to Western dominance.

Only 4 slots for open qualifiers is not a lot, especially if they will be regional and not some mini-tournament on its own, with 32 teams they surely could have afforded at least 4 more. But it's much better than what it was.

Realistically only top 4 in the world have a chance of winning the main tournament. 27th rank after 12 months of play is probably more deserving of an appearance than a 150th who finishes top 8 of open qualifier. Especially since 27th typically isn't getting invited to such tournaments also and is instead just grinding CCT

The only reason they can even do this is because Cologne is a Major. You better be prepared to move your event elsewhere because Cologne takes precedent and priority. If ESL and the Saudis screw with this, they will piss off a lot of folks.

How? The major is the only chance to have your name be put in the actual game. It's not even about the money. If Valve will see that the EWC becoming more popular or something (but how can it, with 15 fans chanting Falcons), they would just pull the license and bye bye. Anway I won't watch a sportwashing event, it just doesn't feel natural.
