GG Baltic qualifier declared fake
The alleged Baltic qualifier for GameGune has been declared fake, after it was known that a fraudster had set it all up for his own benefit.
On Monday we reported that GameGune had alerted Baltic teams about a fake qualifier for the Spanish tournament. The organisation had not been contacted regarding any Baltic host, and therefore no slot would be reserved for the winners.
The incident took place over at the Latvian gaming site, SKILLZ.lv, where it read that two pre-qualifiers would be held during the two last weekends of May, and that a registration fee of €15 would have to be issued.
Contacted by HLTV.org, SKILLZ.lv owner Paul "osi" Shtirjov urges that they were not aware of this fraud, and he states that it should never have happened. The so-called journalist had been given his status a couple of months back, and no one could foresee such a scam.
The fraudster is, or was, a respected personality in the Latvian community, much because of his position as the Latvian national team manager.
The scam was however quickly noticed, and shortly after disclaimed. A total of nine teams had signed up for the fake qualifier, and the fraudster was able to collect €135. SKILLZ.lv has now ceased all activity with the perpetrator, and have announced that the nine affected teams will receive a 50 percent discount to future LAN events hosted by SKILLZ.lv.
