Valve to announce Counter-Strike 2?

The surprise announcement from Valve could be a new installment of the highly-popular FPS title Counter-Strike, according to Gamezone.

Valve announced last week it had cancelled the press unveiling of Portal 2 at the E3 expo in Los Angeles, replacing it with "a surprise".

Gamezone claims that a source close to Valve has captured a screen shot from the alleged developer's website showing that Valve's next big thing is none other that Counter-Strike 2.

The picture, whose displayed link is currently not working, reveals little information besides that the title's proposed release date is set at June 2011.

Picture from: pc.gamezone.com

Stay tuned to HLTV.org as we will bring you more news from Valve's surprise at E3, which will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles, from 14-17 June.

Maybe you never tried 1.3/1.5, if you ask any oldschool player (I mean, OLDSCHOOL) they probably will say that 1.5 was the best release ever, comparing both evolution's, 1.5 was the biggest one. At least in my opinion.

They're not a company, they're a modding team. And they don't really use the "Counter-Strike" brand in their mod's name, just the abbreviation plus the "Promod" thing. Besides, even if they did Valve wouldn't care that much. They're known for not really being bitches about copyright issues, especially when it's about mods (if other companies breached their copyrights that'd be way different :)). They mostly ask people to change the name of a project simply to avoid the users from thinking Valve themselves are developing it. That happened to BMS. Valve got to know about their project, and asked them to remove the "Source" trademark from their mod's name so people wouldn't think it was a game being developed by them.

Whether it happens or not I am so not looking forward to it either way. "New CSS Beta" is all I should have to say. If the trend continues then CS2 will just be a more pub-friendly game than CSS was. I know Team Fortress 2 could be an argument to that but at least Valve actually listened to the competitive TF2 community when the game was still relatively new and I doubt they will do that for CS2.

Some say Valve canceled the Portal 2 announcement at the E3 because of a possible Orange Box 2 surprise, which may include CS 2, Portal 2, TF 3 (?), L4D 3 (?), HL:Ep.3 (?), but i personally think it's about that DOTA like game being developed by Valve and that Icefrog guy. Let's see.

because they try to make it like other games out there with non realistic features , like nexon FPS games graphics and other shit. the beauty and what so great about CS 1.6 is because its simple, and genius. from graphics to sound , buy system and engine everything designed is unique. unlike other games that you pay real $$ for a decent gun or really lame gameplay like PROMOD. only thing that may replace 1.6 is 1.7 when they fix some maps bugs and stuff

I know why they do it but its just pretty stupid to judge something you havent even played yet nor even know if its true. And yes i know what you mean with 1.6 being unique in every aspect but who knows afterall its valve that made cs in the first place.

I don't remember any updates worth mentioning that Valve actually submitted to CS. I do remember several crappy ones though, like the Orange Box ads or the failed attempt to fix Russian Walking. Fact is since they've updated 1.5 to 1.6 Valve hasn't given any real attention to Counter-Strike, which is partly why people have been getting exponentially better at this game. Constant gameplay = room for improvement. If they were to update it every 2 months with new stuff that changes gameplay like they do to TF2, it'd be impossible for a team to be consistently dominant like today's top teams are.

Not really no. CS was made by a couple of dudes and then bought by Valve. Although one of the guys that did make it still works there IIRC.

it was made 10 years ago. from that point people changed and tried to release updates to 1.6 like promode and online both failed badly about 10k players registered... they should update with bug fixes and not releasing a completely new game

I would like to see something similar to CS Promod but with original CS 1.6 physic and recoil (Yes, I think in CSP it's a bit different). Or the better one: SOURCE with shooting/spamming/scanning (whatever u call it) through walls <3

Actually both Half-Life (Original) and Counter-Strike has a much higher sale numer than CS:S, and you must remember, that back in the good old days, people bought Half-Life (Original) to play CS, since it weren't sold seperately in many countries in Europe (Including Denmark)

Just to point it out, they have already said that the suprise is Portal 2 related. And they have canned the entire presentation. Valve put the final nail in the press conference coffin late last night, with an e-mail confirming that its press event at the Regal Theater on Monday has been completely cancelled. Definitely. www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=250562

im unconvinced that this will be CS2, and if it is I think it could be bad news for the competative side of cs. the problem with cs, both source and 1.6 is that the communities are so stubborn and refuse ever move to an updated game, or even support an attempt such as promod. if you through cs2 into the mix we're just going to be left with 3 slightly smaller communities than we have now, and the smaller the communities get, the less reason for tournament holders to support our games

not really, its just a matter of time to change from cs 2,if it will exist valve just has to do one thing, stop supporting cs 1.6 and css and talk to the big organizers of big tournaments to start supporting cs 2 ; ) ,youll see that in less than a year people will all be playing cs 2 : )

It's not CS 2 , it's the Source engine 2. Or it's true, one thing i have notice in the last year is that you can't hide a project anymore, there is always some one who leaks something and maybe this screenshot is true, maybe we will se a CS 2 but maybe it won't be like as good as 1.6 . Even if it is CS 2, guys we all know how VALVe is they announced HL2 EP 3 until today we haven't heard from him, they announced Portal 2 and it was delayed.

First the CSPromod has nothing to do with VALVe, and Second, yes CSPromod is moving to the Orange Box, which mean's you don't have to own CS:S do play it, you only need a game that was on the Orange Box, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two,Portal, and Team Fortress 2.

Yeah not really... They are moving to the Orange Box engine yes, but that doesn't mean they got rid of the CSS assets in the mod. There are still several textures, props, models and sounds from CSS in CSPromod, which means you still have to own CSS to play it. And also wrong about a game on the Orange Box. When CSPromod does go "CSS-free", you will only need one SOURCE game to be able to play it, not one Orange Box game. That means any Source games including HL2:DM/CSS/Garry's Mod, etc. will still enable you to play CSP. Basically so far the requirements to play it still haven't changed. You still need a copy of CSS to play it, and you don't need anything else. In the future these requirements will be lessened so any Source game will do it.

Actually no, the next Beta the 1.05 will be available for people who has only an Orange box game. The textures are from HL 2 and not CS:S exclusive player models they created their own models, weapon models they are creating them too... www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTBOygU-_R8

Mate, there's simply NO way they will be releasing a CSS-free version anytime soon. Believe me, they are still using CSS gun models, they are still using CSS props and they are still using CSS textures. Nuke textures are not from HL2, Dust textures are not from HL2, M4A1/AK47/USP/Glock/etc. models are not from HL2. And you do NOT need an OB game to play a mod developed on the Orange Box engine. Owning ANY Source game already enables you to download every single piece of SDK content available, including the 2007 SDK Base. You can see this easily by just getting a Steam account with a non-OB Source game like Counter-Strike: Source and browsing to "Tools", and you'll find all the SDK content available for download. PS: They wish Player Models were the only thing they were using from CSS. They are remaking player models first because those are a priority, due to the Player:Map ratio that is really off in the current version.

I don't see the point in making these games since I think 1.6 is perfectly fine and a lot of people LOVE it.. I don't want it to be a new CS because I'm afraid people will start playing it and I hate changing games like that, but I'd have to if the competitive side would transfer to "CS2". -.-

"With Counter-Strike 2, there's a big question between, do we go start over from scratch and build this whole new game, do we do something that looks more like Team Fortress 2 that is rooted in the old game but has a ton of new stuff, or do we just sort of take everything that's new that we've released and put that out in a new box," remarked Lombardi. "I think we're leaning more towards the two more radical places than just sort of rolling up the new box and reskinning the box and putting out all the new stuff." My guess is it'll just be like CS:S-beta where they added TF2 style features. In other words - No thanks, back to 1.6

MIRAA, there should not be a hyphen between the words "highly" and "popular" in the article. Also, canceled is spelled with only one L. Lastly, periods (and commas, too) ALWAYS, no matter what, go inside the quotation marks. I know people are going to call me a grammar hound, but I figured I'd give you a few tips to refine your writing. Keep up the good work! I always enjoy your articles.

Valve already announced that the E3-surprise will be Portal-2 themed. This isn't in any way related to Portal 2, so even though this is real, it has nothing to do whatsoever with the E3-surprise. And it looks just as fake as duke nukem forever picture and EP3 picture.

I dont believe this. Valve is not going spend the time and money working on a game as old as CS/HL1. Sure you may see some minor fixes here and there, but that will be it.

the communities are killing themselves. Even if 1.6 and Source split the community in two, the biggest impact on the game is by far the number of players that played at some point and eventually STOPPED. Back in the days, CS had over 2 millions players at ANYTIME of the day and now it doesn't reach those numbers if we had both 1.6 AND source. Is EA killing the FIFA, NHL, NBA, Madden communities because they're making a new game every year? No because that community evolves with the games. CS, Warcraft always had that problem to evolve from one thing to another. For some reason SC players are moving much more easily to a new version than the 2 games mentionned above even though their game was the same for almost 10 years.

Talks Counter-Strike 2 Potential by Nick Breckon Mar 01, 2008 2:53pm CST tags: Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike 2, Valve The topic of a full Counter-Strike sequel has been cautiously broached by Valve during a series of interviews with GameTrailers TV. "We will never abandon Counter-Strike," asserted Valve director of marketing Doug Lombardi, who went on to explain why the game hasn't received a major update since the release of Counter-Strike Source in 2004. "It's a little bit unfair to compare Counter-Strike, I think, to your classic game that's gonna have these sequels. It looks a little bit more like an MMO where it's constantly [being updated]." Of course, even the most successful MMOs get sequels eventually, and it appears that Valve is at least tentatively working out the details of a Counter-Strike refresh. "I think we're leaning more towards the two more radical places than just sort of rolling up the new box and reskinning the box and putting out all the new stuff." But will the game truly go the way of Team Fortress and end up in the new "cartoon shooter" genre? "Oh I doubt that," Lombardi said, laughing. "I just don't think that [Counter-Strike 2] would be a good fit [with Half-Life Episode 3]," added Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, noting that the potential game would be a stand-alone product in his eyes. Newell closed with a dangerous challenge: "But if I get 15,000 emails from customers in response to this interview telling me 'Of course it should be in [the next Orange Box],' then of course we'll pay attention to that."

That's promod actually. The next CS should be something entirely new in my opinion. If only the graphics are different it will suck. What I think is that the new CounterStrike will be built from the new Source Engine (which I think will be the big announcement we all await). And if I know Valve good enough, they will try to take all the good elements that made CS 1.6 and even CSS great and take them a step further. That's their style, and that's why they are the best developers in the world right now. If we have learnt something from all the Valve games all these years is that they are not out if they are not as close to perfection as it can get.

If they take what made CS 1.6 great and follow Promod's steps but add in a new engine similar to BFBC2 with new sounds, new skins for the guns, sum new things but still retaining the same gameplay then they might pull it off. But if they fuck up like they did for Source by making it super n00b friendly then they will fail.

source wasn't noob friendly. Even if Valve took all the code from 1.6 and ported it to the source engine so that it was a carbon copy of 1.6 with new graphics, it would still be easier because of the new and smoother game engine. 1.6 is a more refined game but your statement is widely held and it is simply wrong. remove head from ass pl0x

Sorry to burst your bubble but CSS is much easier, that's a fact. Also, it has nothing to do with the engine; they made the recoil easier and the player models are bigger (the head is like 72% larger). Besides, the fact that they added crap like achievements and killcams to it only confirms that they want it to be noob-friendly.

I have proof that there is no more recoil in 1.6 than there is in source. It does have to do with the engine. That's why even if CSP gets perfected, it will still be easier and people will still cry. It doesn't matter how big the models are because everyone is the same size. a 1.6 model might be smaller in Unit size to developers, but on your screen the models take up the same size on the screen as one another. I'm not for kill cam's or achievements but those aren't for competitive players and can be turned off. Just because a game has them doesn't make it noob friendly. It's to draw more players to the game and it's strictly optional.

Then show me your "proof"... Just start a listen server in both 1.6 and CSS, buy any weapon, start spraying on a wall without moving your mouse nor releasing it, you'll notice the spray patterns are WAY different. Unless you're an expert on the source engine, please don't pull false statements out of your ass. The recoil patterns are in the very code of the game, not the engine. Valve could have implemented the 1.6 recoil patterns into CSS easily if they wanted to. They didn't, though. The size of the models does matter as it's easier to headshot someone if the head is bigger. Yes, you could say "it's easier for your opponent to headshot you as well" but that doesn't make the game any harder. My point is, any noob that just started playing could own anyone by getting headshots due to the easiness of the game while in 1.6 you have to play for years to get good at it.

I PM'd you the pics along with explanations. I have sprayed at a wall numerous times in both games. Valve even showed graphs when the game came out showing the similarities of gun recoil and people like Alex Barfield are on such a high horse that they decided to make an entirely new game for no reason other than to show more ignorance. A blind man can see how the spray patterns are the same. Naturally someone starting out on a game with a smoother game engine will be better at it than someone who is starting out playing in a 12 year old game engine that is severely outdated with player models that have 1 frame movements. I don't need to argue this point any further, it's just a fact and I don't need you to confirm it.

I went through the whole thread.. The best thing would be to disable some map bugs.. Make better looking players / gun models.. Make better detailed map textures but with exactly same dimensions.. Add new maps like tuscan / mirage etc in the default package.. Retain recoil / gameplay etc.. Better GUI with player money etc.. Remove stupid ladder climbing / jump movements with 'shivering' legs.. Add more physics.. Like giving a headshot always throws the enemy player in opposite direction.. Keep Spams / Wallbangs but not through very thick walls and rocks that may simply seem impractical.. Retain Kreedz Jump / KZ bugs with slightly reducing their advantages (if developers / community feels like).. Disable crouch binding on scroll wheel.. Make the game security much much better so that hacks / cheats don't get any encouragement.. Add newer sounds (optional).. Improve netcode so that people with different config PCs get similar experience.. ( even if we have to make the game not playable on lower config PCs if developers feel like.. Specially for sponsors interests ).. & Call it CS 2.0.. I am sure the community would be ready to even pay extra to upgrade to CS 2.0.. Give them the option of keeping both games alive initially.. So that we can go back to 1.6 if 2.0 turns out to be a fail.. Give bots some intelligence if you feel :P

What isn’t known to most people is that, all “steamworks” titles tracks your gameplay style and keeps a very precise record on how you play the game, where you have more difficulty, what you use the most, where you die the most and so on. DAFUQ?
