Razer is new IEM peripheral provider

Razer was yesterday presented as the official peripheral provider for the fifth season of the Intel Extreme Masters, when the IEM5 Global Challenge Cologne kicked off.

The Intel Extreme Masters last season had the German peripheral manufacturer ROCCAT as the official peripheral provider, with the second Global Challenge of the fifth season kicking off yesterday at gamescom in Cologne, it was announced that the American  peripherals manufacturer Razer would step in as official peripheral provider for the fifth season.

The fifth season of the Intel Extreme Masters kicked off last month, when the first Global Challenge took place in Shanghai. Noticeable would be that on the IEM website, only logos of Intel and Razer are currently displayed. This could indicate that the Intel Extreme Masters is no longer receiving support from DELL and Alienware.

The PC's used at the latest Global Challenge were not Alienware, but equipment provided by the Intel Demo Deport Center, which could only confirm even more, that the American based company has either pulled all plugs or are still negotiating a contract with ESL for the fifth season.

Honestly, that's not a good news, Alienware > Razer.

As long as it pays the bills and keeps e-sports alive, it doesn't really matter how known a brand is when sponsoring them.. That's just my opinion though.

Yes, but unfortunately Dell is more known than Razer, this was a positive advantage, when razer is only known by gamers.

Gaming gear is attractive to gamers, which is bad for "normal" brands; but I see what you are trying to say. The higher the brand is, the more they are willing to spend on their advertising campaign (a.k.a sponsors).. which is better sponsorships. right?

Not exactly, what i was trying to say is that since Dell is everywhere and is a big corporation, for example they start selling PC's with advertising of ESL and a person that bought that PC probably never heard about it and starts to follow it, while with Razer products most of them is only for sale on the internet and only the people that know the brand buys it. So just to sum it up: Dell - Every person in the world probably has heard of it = To new people to follow ESL and other corporations wanting to sponsor it too = More interest = More money Razer - Apart from gamers, there are a limited group of people that knows it, and their products aren't accessible as the Dell ones, since most of Razer products it's hard to find on a retail shop.

Ah ok you are discussing the benefits of the brands, but yeah that's true I guess. Well technically I have a Steelseries headset and mousepad, and I think the reason they came in my mind and why I bought them was because their name is everywhere :P. I believe that's what Razer is trying to accomplish as well, though going for the big guns rather than just sponsoring teams. Although I'm not sure that's a good move for a small company (compared to others out there that is). Anyway I misunderstood what you meant, I thought you were talking about the benefits of e-sports which is what led to my statement; thanks for clarifying though. :)

From what I've seen over the years, each player/team has the right to wear or use their respective sponsors. It's basically like a team's right to tag up their organization :)

when it says razer is new peripheral provider, to me that sounds like razer with provide the peripherals (mouse/pads/headset/keyboards), whilst i have seen this is not usually the case, i've only recently gotten back into CS and watching big tournaments, i dont know what has changed. that is my train of thought on the subject so no need to be a patronising little twat about.

I've seen some SC2 matches on the stage and they were still using the Sennheiser pilot headset and nothing about Razer (Which makes sense). So my guess is that they ESL TV shoutcasters will use razer gear, the pc's on gamescom will be with razer gear, there will be Razer advertising on stream (Like alienware had) and by the way they are giving Razer products: www.esl-world.net/masters/season5/news/132181/Win-one-of-the-40-gifts-from-Razer-/

the basic rule (and ive run a Razer Sponsored Event is this) 1. You change all the backgrounds of the PC's to Razer Backgrounds. 2. The peripherals provided are Razer. So if you dont bring your own, you have to use Razer. 3. I would assume there will be posters, and probably shoutcasters using Razer. Players are allowed to use whatever they want (unless they are sponsored by someone in which case they have their own rules with their team).

it means that the staff will use the stuff around the event and let players use it if they need. not that it happens often, but sometimes people dont use mousepads at home and need something to use on the tablecloths at tournaments. i assume it also means that razer gear will be used for promo booths around the event, etc
