IEM5 American groups drawn

Groups for IEM5 American Championship have been drawn, seeing round one kicking off on Wednesday.

National ESL have announced the group draws for the IEM5 American Championship, seeing four teams in four groups. A total of six teams will at the end of the stage advance to the American Championship finals which will take place at the Comic-Con Convention, October 8-10.

Another two South American teams will join the six above teams for the finals. These two will be announced sometime later this week.

Whichever teams manage to top their groups will receive an automatic spot in the IEM5 American Championship finals, while second and third-place finishers will play relegation matches to determine the remaining two teams.

Have to give where credit is due and while EG looked great at MSI BEAT IT, an international event, that is an incredibly ignorant statement and you're severely underestimating some other North American teams. They barely defeated (old) Loaded at WCG Quiver in New York City prior to ESEA LAN 6 & Arbalet Cup Dallas on de_train. They blamed outside noise as an issue when it affected everyone in attendance, all teams including (old) Loaded, on their own public blogs. Loaded's lineup at the time was Steno, Pauly, Hostile, Adrenaline and Djibouti. During Arbalet they were upset by iDemise which was a pug consisting of Irukandji, savi0r, aZn, sfx and icy --- albeit not without alleged controversy that went unreported (along with Na'Vi!). Prior to all of this EG faltered in several online matches to the likes of Ruins/Finesse (sgares, Semphistroll, Dizzaman, TRULS & bsw) and Area 51 (GRT, Lalonde, n0swal, ScorpioN and Medic) during ESEA Invite Season 6. While they lost on a custom map by the former team they were taken down on de_inferno, conversely, by the latter team. They were definitely looking to lock down the number one position even online as it translates to the number seed on LAN. During the LAN they had trouble on the match stage against Ruins/Finesse, the eventual 4th place team, on de_dust2 and squeaked by. Prior to all of this when the core members of fRoD, Storm and Warden were on Complexity, Team 3D still had the upper hand with more LAN victories against them on domestic soil from 2004-2006 (CS 1.6). It was great to see EG represent North America and win it for us but I'd be more careful in simply assuming that they're going to come back home, fly to WCG USA 2010 (especially with a ringer), IEM and return to the online season without having to try or have a care in the world as they dominate fellow Yanks effortlessly. That's not the case and especially on LAN. EG is definitely the best North American team hands down and we all know this --- there is no denying that. However to say they don't have to perform at their peak level and "perform 100%" to take down the competition back at home is an ignorant statement and paints a poor portrait of our scene. While we're definitely still hurting, there's more than one team that can give EG a run for their money. If you look at previous matches against domestic teams on LAN objectively you would come to such a conclusion as well.

Well said - I do think that a lot of people tend to underrate the American scene despite how CGS damaged the NA 1.6 scene a couple of years ago. Recently a lot of US teams - including many that you mentioned - have displayed promising performances and I personally have always enjoyed US Counter-Strike.

Perhaps you missed the parts where I mentioned iDemise, Ruins/Finesse, Area 51 and Team 3D (definitely not a 3D fanboy either!)? Or the previous Complexity movies along with Loaded's that I've produced? Ruins/Finesse mini clips? Nearly every single team for ESEA Season 6 Week in Reviews? EG strat videos on WinOut? I'm more of a fanboy when it comes to logic but to each his own.

I think it's very nice that they are competing with the male teams, even if they don't do well they deserve some respect. It's not like tennis or soccer (or any other physical sport) where girls can never be as strong as guys, they just have to move a mouse and press some buttons. Girls can easily be on the same level as guys with the right competition and motivation.
