ESL to release new anti-cheat tool

The Electronic Sports League have divulged information about a new anti-cheat tool which is in the making.
The new project has been given the name ESL Wire Anti-Cheat, and is said to be integrated with the already existing ESL Wire software which offers features such as a screen shot tool and integrated Aequitas- anti-cheat technology.
Back in 2009, ESL were originally developing the second edition of Aequitas, but as problems occured in the third quarter of the year and the deadline not reached, plans were abandoned.
However, when the development team realized that the Aequitas 2 would not see daylight, they started working on a new tool simultaneously. The new project advanced with greater speed than what its planned predecessor did.
The closed beta

The new project has been given the name ESL Wire Anti-Cheat, and will be integrated with the already existing ESL Wire software which offers features such as a screen shot tool and integrated Aequitas anti-cheat technology.

Back in 2009, ESL were originally developing the second edition of Aequitas, but problems occured in the third quarter of the year and the deadline was not reached. This made the developers start working on another tool simultaneously.

As months went by, and the schedule for Aequitas 2 became even more delayed, the new project had advanced with much greater speed than what its planned predecessor had. Close to two months ago, the Aequitas 2 plans were officially canceled, and ESL Wire Anti-Cheat was looking very promising.

The closed beta was for short time ago concluded, and a release candidate (RC) is now ready. The development behind the new anti-cheat tool has a stunning price tag of more than €500,000, Community Manager Julia Christophers said in a comment on the ESL website.

"Thanks everyone for  being patient and for trusting the new AC. more than €500.000 have been spent on the new AC already and many months of hard work. We are really excited and we do not want to make any hasty steps"

The new anti-cheat solution is a real computer driver (software used to interface a particular hardware device with an operating system), operating on the Ring 0 level.

"In computer science, hierarchical protection domains, often called protection rings, are a mechanism to protect data and functionality from faults (fault tolerance) and malicious behaviour (computer security)."

"Ring 0 is the level with the most privileges and interacts most directly with the physical hardware such as the CPU and memory" - Wikipedia

Because the new software is a real driver, it will work outside ESL matches, something that Aequitas 2 would not be able to cope with. This opens the possibility for employing the tool in for instance ESL gather matches.

The Electronic Sports League have not set any particular release date yet, but in an article by Julia Christophers it reads that they are hoping to release it within short time.

Of course they do, making an anti-cheat that will actually 100% work and not have cheats released for it is so so hard, hopefully as this has had so much money spent on it it will actually work :)

Rough calculation of their salary, ranging from 25-30000 dkr per month. salary per month * number of employees * months / 7.5 = euroes 25000 * 12 * 12 / 7.5 = 480000 euroes 30000 * 12 * 12 / 7.5 = 576000 euroes Even with the least educated devolopers, with the least experience the salary would still be 21000+ per month.

Dude, a 'normal' software developer gets maybe between 20-30,000 euros a year (in the UK), so 12 of them x 1 year = 240,000 - 360,000 euros, and if you read the article development started in 2009, so it's about right, which is still a pretty amazing amount for an anti-cheat :)

For all domains of development ? I mean i dont think video games developpers earn that much every month... But web developpers do :D and frequently they do earn more than 4.5K/month but it's the same in All European countries.

but it's the same in All European countries. you guys want to make "nice" answers to the admin or what? use your brains. Demonstrate me that the developers earn 4.5k€ in Europe and I will send you 1000€ to your bank account, just for that. Your answers make me laugh, weak up...

Quoting myself : "But web developpers do" I never said all developpers were earning 4.5k€/month. I was talking about those who work for the deisgn of websites, web agencies, who spend their selling website builded by some cms with a price totally overated. I'm not licking any one ass and if you were smart enough you should know that the web is an oasis of economic wealth. Most of the internet users dont win anything of internet but web developpers can spend a nice salary if they "use their brains". I was just asking a question to Nomad and never wanted to start some stupid argument about money... I dont like your tone either. Stop judging people about things you dont understand it could be good advice in life. About your 1k€ proposal i do accept and can show you many friends developpers earning more than 4.5k€ each month, they are all french and they do not all work in the field of web :P. Ps : All my school is full of developpers and i am one actually, i'm not winning 4.5K€ yet but i hope in few years i will :D

weak up, again. <i> "I was talking about those who work for the deisgn of websites, web agencies, who spend their selling website builded by some cms with a price totally overated. "</i> lol, if you really study about programing, pcs, etc... you should know that it's crazy what you are saying, or maybe you live in another world. 4000+€ for design websites, agencies, I just can LOL. Ofc there are ppl who earn that, but most of them doesn't earn more than 2500€. edit. or France is very different from Spain, which I don't think so. [is better, but come on, 4,5k € for that ppl, rofl.!!!

Are you stupid or what ? How a 22 years old guy from Kuwait living in Spain who barely know anything about programming can pretend that he knows everything about the salary of web developpers? Of course everyone programming in javascript, php, xhtml/css and all web programming languages arent earning 4.5K€/month but a lot of people do, those who are well established in this domain and can have 6K€ contracts to design some simple website which will take them like 3hours to build completly. About other demains like Search engine optimization, database architecture or just the development of iphone applications are some good resources income for developpers/programmers. I think you have no realistic idea about how developpers work and you still think they are geeks living a basement doing like some WoW gold farmers... You can believe in what ever you want and i wont change the thinking of someone so narrow minded.

I am not from Kuwait, just like this flag. I am living in Spain right now, studied in Germany, I already finished technician of systems of telecommunications and IT and still studying. My sister is programing in C++ and java, and she doesn't earn 4k€. And as you said, not all the ppl earn that, but in your first post you said "they who programs web pages, etc do" so I am not the one who is stupid.

this info is taken from a book which cost 15€ "Working Abroad Career Guide for Denmark" If it's not true, could you show me 'your' truth? It's obvious that there are programmers that can earn that amount of money and 10 times more, but that is not average. And if 4000€+ if low amount for working on a chair, even if it's in Denmark... I really don't get it. You wouldn't like to earn 4k€ per month being a programmer in Denmark? maybe life is more expensive than in Spain or Germany, but with 4k€ you can live really really good

Yea at some point it goes up above 60%, but it is a tad more complex than that because you can deduct certain things, thinking of it at around 50% is normally alright..

Not sure if it's wise to spend that amount of money on a single program. They could have used existing programs in the market, so that the money could be spent on other areas (ex: more prize money) or qualifiers in other countries that never had ESL before.

no.. you have no idea how big the cheat problem is but this program will not solve all problems. they have to reform the whole AC-section to make competitive play in the lower ranked leagues like EAS possible again.

Assume what you wrote is right, "but this program will not solve all problems." That would give a bigger reason not to spend the money at all. But my point isn't about whether the program will work or not, it's the money being spent. I personally think it's not wise, except if they have huge sponsors backing ESL financially. Then it's not a problem.

I love the idea of implementing an anti-cheat that will stop hackers, but what exactly do they plan on doing with our "CPU and memory"? My PC is reaching it's limits with all these drivers, devices, and software installed already. Plus this increases the chance of security software interfering with the program such as "Computer optimizers", which can cause many problems in the future. Might even damage certain computers.

But ESL Wire AC can much deeper intervene in the system. The idea behind it, is a kind of turnaround in the subject. For Turtle Entertainment is serious business, they don't want to rely on VAC, EAC or what else. Furthermore, these programs are crap.

When a program is full of bugs and memory problems which you have to solve, it 'll cost less to do a new one with a stronger basis. Especially if you didnt developped the old prog.

anti-cheat business is like anti-virus business. 15 years after the first anti-virus there still isn't a proper anti-virus program. either it takes way too many resources and causes too many problems or it just does not protect you properly. I feel this 500k anti-cheat is either going to take too much resources or it will not detect all cheats.

15 years after the first anti-virus there still isn't a proper anti-virus program. I think that's because virus keeps developing everyday. Hackers will spawn new viruses that cancel out the protection that an anti-virus has on your PC. To say that there's no proper anti-virus program, it's not either right or wrong. I believe anti-virus company, like Kaspersky, is trying their best to protect your PC from harms.

I don't know where that theory comes from. It's possible that they also make viruses. But, at least, I've never had any problem with my anti-virus (thx God. :D) I think the source of the viruses that infect most people PCs are caused by their own actions. For example: downloading program that isn't from genuine website, accessing anonymous websites (mostly porn websites), opening unknown emails, etc.

I use vista and I didn't have Norton the first time I bought it, I don't know how you came to that conclusion. And I don't exclude the possibility that they make viruses in order to gain more profits. It's just that the caused why the viruses infect your PC, most of them, are because of your own action like I said above.

how old is the ring0 cheat? at least 1-2years since the last update there are newer cheat packs out there immunity and a lot more unkown privat hacks wich will be updated any month. and for sure this ac tool will improve but how long? i will give them 1month and then they must update their ac tool like EAC3 does it and i doubt that these ac guys will do the job. i guess that not the right way. they spended 500k euros for and ac tool okay lets ban the assholes :D but there is still the problem with the esl league self there are pretty much and known corrupt admins with a little bit money your 12pps will go or your timetable will be rejected. as i said the should have been spend more money in better lan events and with admins wich get money for what they do. how many admins are being payed in the esl leage? i dont know the numbers but not many :D

What you people don't seem to realize is 500,000€ is not that big a money for any company, especially for a fairly big company such as ESL. It's a big wad of cash for any individual, yes, but we're talking about a business here, and businesses don't exactly run with the allowance you get from your mom. It's not many years back when CPL offered 1,000,000$ as price money. ESL AC is something that will most likely make them a lot of money through lisenses etc if it can be used for other games as well (companies like Blizzard might very well be interested in it and so on).

if it eliminates cheats, it will be worth it. If it works well, they can sell it to any online league (like EAC do) and make the money back in a flash. Dont get me wrong, EAC is good, but it's nowhere near perfect. And cheats do exist to bypass it already.

i dont think so because when a cheat is published or similar sofware it spreads everywhere for free and also the developer risks his cheat to be useless when an update comes. so believe me he is gonna take the warm 1337euro Even world leading software companies, offers about this amount of money prize and totally works

you can find EAC cheats pretty easily, you just have to pay for them, same with the current aequitas. While this is the case, some people are going to try and cheat in these big online competitions, happened against us last season. Hopefully this new anti-cheat will be a big improvement and actually work :)

Once they make it available I presume people will know if it helps or not. Helps with regard to cheats detection that is because people using them are actually the real problem.

Cheats have always been there. Remember those cheat codes for the old games? That is why I said that more than on the cheats it depends on the people deciding to use them, which on a multiplayer scale is pretty much more harmful than on the singleplayer (which is where those "oldschool" cheats were able to be used) one.

true, but look at newer multiplayer games! Look at console games. Halo doesn't have much issues with the cheaters and online leagues!!! The point of having a PC is that it's content is open to the owner and if the game developpers don't plan their stuff accordingly, then it's REALLY hard for anyone else to come up with a good AC. For sure the players are to be blame, but it's the same with sports and drugs. An endless problem starts as soon as 1 does it w/o having the equivalent consequences tagging him as a "cheater"

Of course, but as you stated it in your last sentence in the end it is the player who decides not the cheat(s). And as soon as the console is open to user interaction (which is not due to the fact that that way it is easier to get customers money) the same problem would arise. Not to mention all the hipocresy about 'fair play' stuff around some sports and as soon as possible, f.e. in football, you think you are assisting a swimming competition at the opponent's penalty area. As usual, the human nature is to blame ;)

nice news, but i've a question about that : "The new anti-cheat solution is a real computer driver (software used to interface a particular hardware device with an operating system), operating on the Ring 0 level." if it's a driver, then he's always up. and i would to know, if i use x-spectate, am i automatically banned from esl? thank you

Shit, this program costed a lost. Like I said in the ESL site, they better make this far better than the previous, which couldn't work in most systems properly and made ever hi-end computers lag.

Some interesting posts, so i give my comments from another side of line: The development behind the new anti-cheat tool has a stunning price tag of more than €500,000, =>For normal professional software cycle process 500k is not much. AC - 500k Organner - 20$ ESL Admins faces - priceless => Well it will cost lot more than 20$ to develop professional cheat, but also it takes lot of time. Of course if cheats would be done also by normal software process it would also cost 10-100k+ how old is the ring0 cheat? =>For CS and known one the "immunity" is about 2 years. there are newer cheat packs out there immunity and a lot more unkown private hacks wich will be updated any month. => These unknown private hacks are probably not worry of any AC's (bunch of users of all players). Of course these private hacks are hard to detect (without AC them getting actual hack, ..very hard). For AC's, i would assume they consider Organner biggest threat since basically he own's most of "CS cheat development market" and very well known as even this thread shows. Others similars are quite big joke (lot promises to bypass all AC's, but nothing happening and failing even bypass vac). Because the new software is a real driver, it will work outside ESL matches, => So basically AC can monitor your activity all-the-time, taking SS from your desktop so when you are not playing, so watch out guys if you are watching xxx-material and it gets posted on ESL screenshots server :) 15 years after the first anti-virus there still isn't a proper anti-virus program. => There is, but cat & mouse game continues always.

I hope this stops cheating permanently. All we need next is for ESL to make a free league in North America then we can finally get back to playing competitive CS and get rid of the plague that is ESEA.

the esea client is doing a much better job than any other client to catch cheaters though! Too bad it`s slow to react when they do catch one!

having a ring0 app looking for ring0 meant to obfuscate anything using ring0 to detect it won`t change much. Posting this b4 it`s even out is probably only making it harder for them to stay cheat proof for 2 weeks once it`s out! In the end it will be a matter of wich one is getting loaded first and the cheater will always have the option to remove AC, hide their cheats deeper, re-install AC. I call that MBR cheats to be common within a year anyway, hell it could even be included in a cracked OS to look like it was legit. Will ACs declare war to OS crackin ... I doubt it Plus, german cheat devs have insiders in ESL anyway (not saying they have leaks from the AC team but at some point it will happen or get reverse engd.

First, It's not an 'app' It's a real time driver, good luck remaking it to be a fake one. And 2 weeks? Look at orgranner still no EAC cheat, I wonder how hes gonna 'bypass' this one.

or you are wrong since EAC is bypassed ?!? and it's still an APP simulating a real-time driver. I don't think it's an approved driver wich means it's still not a real driver :p THAT SAID, I'm not even sure it's legal in most countries if they get illegitimate access to ring0

"legal" You accept the EULA once you press "I accept" to install etc. So in that case you lost, and yes it is a real-time driver, not some fancy APP. It's even approved.
