HLTV.org robbed at WCG

Towards the end of the first day of World Cyber Games 2010 in Los Angeles, HLTV.org was robbed of equipment worth $3,000.

When the last games of the day were about to end, I (Nix0n), went to visit the bathroom, when returning I discovered that our Canon 7D camera, with a 50mm f/1.8 lens mounted and a borrowed 70-200mm f/4 lens were missing. I had the opportunity to stay in the tournament area to handle HLTV setup.

Our Canon 7D is no longer with us

Nobody besides referees, players and their team leaders, as well as specific media and VIPs can enter the area and the equipment was out of reach from the spectators behind the barricades.

At first I thought someone was pulling a prank on me, but when rushing around the area quizzing people and searching bags, I realized that someone had stolen our equipment. The 70-200mm f/4 lens was not mounted, but stood next to the Canon 7D, on the table where my laptop and other equipment were. Whoever decided to take the equipment, did not take another lens of ours, a cheap 17-85mm f/4-5.6 and also did not take an iPhone that was left charging in the PC next to me.

A $1,000 Canon 70-200mm f/4 is also missing

We can only stress that any help in getting our equipment back will be appreciated, so if any players or managers reading this have seen anything, please let us know. We are a small site without the economic resources to simply go out and buy new equipment like this, the loss of this is something that will affect us for many months to come before we will even have a chance of replacing it. We are sad this will negatively affect our WCG coverage, robbing us of not just the money, but also the opportunity to do proper video interviews.

Clearly it is frustrating that you cannot leave your things for 5 minutes, without someone running off with it. Neverthe less, this will not knock us out, we have spare equipment, though not of the same quality, but equipment that should still be able to secure the top notch coverage we always bring to you guys at home.

Relax. It's really not their fault. Stealing is wrong, unacceptable and a pathetic thing to do. Hopefully they will get their equipment back pronto.

Doesnt matter where you are... its shite that people cant be trusted. It's not a case of what country / culture. If you're around people you trust - why should leaving something unattended be a concern?

it doesnt really "serve him right" because who would expect this to happen? but I do agree that leaving thousands of dollars of equipment unwatcheed for any period of time isn't the smartest thing to do. :( shitty deal

Words cannot describe my disappointment, this was from a restricted tournament area, who in esports would travel to what should be one of the greatest events of the year, and then steal from a site that is nothing but dedicated to esports.. So disappointed..

Well, You have to complain the WCG security staff about this and they have to do something for your equipment. You are not careless but I am shocked how can the WCG staff be so careless. Its disguising! 3000$ its a big amount buddy. I am really sad for your loss. :( I hope that WCG staff after reading this may help you.

No need to be a sarcastic prick about it. You missed the point of my comment in the first place. You guys mentioned how it would affect HLTV's coverage and everything, what with photos and interviews, and I offered a suggestion of borrowing similar equipment from a friend. You guys act like there's no way, now that your 7d/lens were stolen, to bring equipment to the events and get the coverage you want. Just borrow some from your friends, and this time don't leave them unattended, and you'll be able to cover events like always. Simple. Just be more careful with it this time.

yes what jonz1g said. They didnt take the iphone cause they are easy to track to a geolocation coordinate or specific location. If they had taken that, then you would be able to find your gear when the iphone was on :\

Sorry what is your link proving? You listed the highest ranked Canadian cities in a Canadian poll? It's not comparing statistics to American cities. Those trying to blame the USA, or North America, or any country for theft is completely unwarranted. You travel to ANY COUNTRY in the entire world and you run the risk of theft, pick pockets, etc. The best thing to do is keep your valuables in your site at all times, something HLTV.org staff forgot to do. You wouldn't leave three thousand dollars worth of cash on a table unattended so why leave that much worth in camera equipment. Next time, take it with you in a backpack or ask someone to watch it, no matter where you are your stuff isn't safe. Lesson learned.

You can blame the states all you want but people steal all over the world. The real person at fault here is the person who was in charge of that equipment. You really can't blame anyone but yourself for this, I can't imagine someone being so naive as to just leave 4000 worth of equipment around in front of random kids and random volunteers and not expect to get stolen from. I hope you do get it back, but there really is only one person to blame.

no matter where it was you shouldn't have left it. you're not to blame for someone stealing your stuff, but just setting it down and walking away from it you made yourself vulnerable and unfortunately someone took advantage of that.

it's not like he just left it on some random table while he went to the toilet, it was in a restricted access area where there was lots of other equipment sitting around too. If you're doing coverage at an event, you shouldn't have to have a huge ass camera hanging from your neck while you go for a piss..

You have to take into account the cultural divergences. In brazil you have to walk around with your hands in your pocket so you don't get robbed. On the other hand, in the northern europe countries people are very well educated in the sense of not stealing the ones around you. It's just how it is...

MIRAA is correct, if you have to pack-up your laptop / phone / camera's every hour because you need to get a drink / go to the bathroom / go down towards the stage to take a photo or the other 100 things he does per day, he would never have time to do anything. Quite simply you need to rely on the event to provide a safe working environment. Nixon wasnt just some guy walking around, he is there, in a staff area doing his job. They hand out passes, which is a good start, but obviously someone is really dishonest within the WCG or someone got a pass when they shouldnt have. Either way, its clearly not Nixons fault. However, i cant help but wonder how much stuff i could of lost if this happened at MSI BEAT IT, i left my laptop / cameras / equipment un-attended for hours at a time .... GW China !!!

I could help hltv.org with donating for example 5€, if every person who can afford some extra €.. together we can pay them back this stuff. It's just a small favour for letting us to watch every big tournament, fresh news, etc. I suppose that you, nix, may not accept something like this, but what has happened is perjuicial for all of us. So a small donate could help you in buying the new equipment. What do you think about it?

7d is pretty hot but the newer 60D canon cameras are hotter ;p the lens has been surpassed aswell (70-200 2.8 II) I work for a photografic equipment retailer ;) but obviously the thief knew what he was doing if he left the smaller lens and the Iphone, so you're probably right on them being a photowhizz/crack =x

It was in the restricted tournament area, listen, we do this ALL the time, leave expensive stuff like this, you guys expect Nix to drag around 1-2 laptops, a big DSLR, 3 lenses, our video cam, the microphone, his mouse, mousepad and headset everytime he has to go talk to an admin, to the toilet or something? We HAVE to leave things behind sometimes, and Nix has attended so many events (check his profile here at the site), so it isn't like he is some rookie who just drops shit where he knows the general public can come grab it..

Well i understand your problems, but if u say you do that all the time, it was very likely that once this is going to happen, in future at least go in pars so one can watch over equipment...

that's what LA is..a mixing pot of all sorts of different races and ethnicities. sadly, there are those that steal. let's face it, if you own something expensive, don't leave it laying around ESPECIALLY in one of the biggest metropolitan cities in the country/world and the most diverse population.

To rob - to take something away from by force : steal from (2) : to take personal property from by violence or threat. Camera was took from nixon secretly, meaning he wasn't aware of camera being taken and he discovered it afterwards this had already taken place, so it was stolen. Im not making this explanation up, I am studying Law(altough first year) and we already had english lesson were we precisely defined meanings of all Law related terms. Cool story, I know. Not trying to be smartass, just saying :D

not surprised, too. 2 weeks ago my mom went to Makro (somethin' like cash & carry) by car. After throwing fag through window she clicked wrong button and left the car with window fully open instead of fully closed. After few minutes there was a massage "that owner of car with registration blablabla is needed on a parking lot". A security guy gave that information. After he has gone a strange lady came to my mom and told her that she heard security guy talking on phone to other guy "I've found an audi with openned window and nobody on horizon. Come fast." The guy appeared after minute and started to bushing around then this lady step out from the car (she was waiting with handicapped child) and told to this security guy "maybe you should send info to information and give massage through speakers". He was soo scared and of course said "yes, yes, I'll do this"

That really sucks, was there anyone near the table when you left it there. I'm guessing you would have asked everyone who was in the area when you found it missing. Talking to all the people in the area when it happened would have been your best chance at finding the culprit. Getting the word out might help recover the camera before the event finishes too. GL with it all, a lot of ppl here are willing to support you if it comes to the need of replacing that borrowed lens :>.

We got no insurance on it, stupid yes, but we cannot really afford the business insurances.. And yea, everyone in esports should know how hard it is to just stay afloat, which is why stealing from a colleague seems so absurd..

You should talk with pasha ( he looks pretty impressive ) and ask him to have a stroll around the venue. And ask any suspicious looking kid "where's my fucking camera", or "someone stole my camera...talk". I bet you would find it faster than the cops would. But seriously this is fucking ridiculous.

this is sad and I think we all already know it was a great lost for you guys, however clearly it was no ones fault. Shame that an event like WCG allows this stuff to happen, wtv, expected from an event that cuts down the pool price one day before it starts. Anyway, you have been here for us for a long time and now it´s our turn to pay you guys back, make a Donate Section, many of us want to help, if everyone here donates 3$ you´ll get your money and buy new equipment, or at least, it will help. And guys, PLEASE, make insurance on it, we know it´s expensive, but it worth it, you can´t trust no one these days. Good luck to you guys

I don't think this was nixon's fault. He had to go to the bathroom for like five minutes. It's not like he was wondering around talking to girls and being irresponsible. I've been in situations like that and you can't just carry your stuff around with you all day and eventually you will have to part with your things for short periods of time. The #1 thing to do in these situations is to ask someone near you if they could watch your stuff for you while you're gone. That's what I use to do in those situations, but again, I don't think this was nixons fault. No one is perfect and if a thief wants your stuff bad enough, theres not much you can do.

Polish thiefs did their job ;). Please check pasha's backpack :P. But seriously, remember Nixon, it is only possible in scandinavian countries to left something unattended - bike in front of grocery store, house door not locked or car keys in ignition switch when you go pay for the petrol. In any other country it is very probable that your'e gonna be nicked.

lol dude ... this is LA ... I lived here all my life, you need to leave someone as a watch dog if the items are not secured. You underestimated Los Angeles criminals, you think a cheap VIP area would stop them? If the equipment was that important you should have taken the proper precautions to protect your gear. But then again you're not a local here so you wouldn't know what to expect. Sorry about your loss, I would hate to lose expensive equipment too!

It is quite a pity to read some comments honestly. I am not sure if after posting them their authors realise what *crap* they just decided to post. I will ignore the most obvious *making fun of the situation* comments but the ones happily accusing this or that team just because the players are from a certain country (even race?) or because a given team have lost a match(!!!) leads them to take away things from each other. It shouldn't come much as a surprise as the same happens even at this very site when a match is discussed or people just decide to rage at each other on the basis of a given country flag featured or not sharing this or that opinion, lacking any offense. Some of the people that posted not only in this thread but on this site should think about this, honestly. There are plenty of other places where your garbage would fit better than here. On topic, well, shit happens as just as said this 'restricted area' should help to avoid things like this to happen because people attending are there for the coverage not to act as mules. Still a bit more of attention would have helped but, as usual and always unfortunately, it is a lesson that is learnt afterwards. Don't let this bring you down, Marc ;)

All security fags are like that. It's not like you need qualification for such a job is it? I see such douchebags all the time at concerts. They're mostly lowbrainers without education who go there to act big and like in this situation - steal stuff. I also LOL every time I see judges at every WCG behind players just lol. The doubleduck rule is long forgotten. They should move on and take example from events like Arbalet, Extreme Masters etc. They don't need this amount of staff.
