ESL opens Iberian League

The Electronic Sports League has announced the creation of a league for Portuguese and Spanish teams only.

The Iberian League will consist of 12 teams, six from Portugal and Spain, who will play in the same league format which the EPS leagues have been using for the past years.

Each country will organise an online qualifier, which will reward the teams who finish from first to third with places in the final league.

The top three teams from Portugal and Spain will receive a direct invite for the main competition and will thus not require to participate in the qualifiers.

The first season of the Iberian League will not feature any prize money, but the ESL has told HLTV.org that the competition will be treated very seriously, just like any EPS.

Should the first season, which will serve as a test to the stability of the teams and players, prove successful, then the other seasons are expected to start giving away prizes to the top contenders.

Registration for the Spanish and Portuguese online qualifiers will begin tomorrow, 29 March.

Stay tuned to HLTV.org for full coverage of the Iberian League.

It doesn't really answer his question, and it's not really hard to change one word... On a side note, a very small part of Iberian Peninsula is french.

I get the feeling the French community got a more stable approch compered to the communities in Spain and Portugal! I might be wrong though, but France at least got a few teams that could prob call em self top 50/100 in the world MILLENIUM, eShara and so on... =)

Benelux EPS kinda works yes, but I still think there are teams in the competition which don't deserve the spot. It would be nice for the competition to see the top teams from the benelux, UK and France together, wouldn't it ?

definetly! right now I can see at least 5 french teams worth watching (Millenium, eSahara, QWERTY, nSydia, LDLC.com). I don't know much about Benelux' scene though, ppl on french speaking websites say it wouldn't work cuz there's quite a big gap between these countries' teams' level but I still think it would make it more entertaining to have several countries in the same league

As said, I can only speak about the Spanish scene which is pretty much unstable in terms of teams. Therefore I find it plausible for ESL to save their money at first and see how this new league goes in order to throw in some real money...

it needs eps balcan for sure balcan cs scene is growing , here in serbia we have like small lan tournaments every week and big lan tournaments with prize purses of 2600e :/ we have so many good teams that are underrated because they dont appear here in hot matches that much and people cant see their teamwork as well as aim :/ last time bgdonline vs teg im not making excuses but you cant judge them bgdonline have played a lan tournament at the same day which they won and they couldnt play in top shape :/
