CS:GO release date announced

Valve has announced a release date for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The anticipated game is targeted for a release on August 21 at a price point of $15.

Valve made the announcement just in time for E3 which is an annual video game conference short for Electronic Entertainment Expo held in Los Angeles. One of the many companies announcing big news at this year's event is Valve.

The game is expected to be released on August 21, in time for IEM Season VII, with a cost of $15 across all platforms. Intel Extreme Masters has often made their announcements in August, so Valve's release date would allow IEM to use CS:GO already in the upcoming season.

Will IEM VII see CS:GO used in more than just show matches?

CS:GO has split the opinions of fans in half with seemingly most with a Counter-Strike: Source background anxiously waiting for the new game while the Counter-Strike 1.6 fan base hasn't for the most part enjoyed Hidden Path's new game.

While a few top players such as Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund have said they don't mind the game, the overwhelming majority including the likes of Natus Vincere and ESC Gaming have said they are not interested in Valve's new title and would rather play League of Legends or DotA 2 competitively.

hes right bf3 is more fun and more intresting after 1.6, no other game can be so competitive than BF3 after 1.6, ofcourse 1.6 is best game, but if wanna get some new graphic and other game than BF3 is realy good, even call of duty MW3 is realy not so good compare to BF3... just my opinion and i played cs 1.6 for 11years and also competitive...

Ofcourse I never shot with a real gun.. Maybe its normal for Brazilians to shoot real guns, but from my way of seeing things, guns are to be used by people trained to do so, so why should i shoot a gun when im just an 18 years old person who has no training in shooting guns ? Anyways, by simulator I mean that the game is realistic, wind, distance etc are important factors when shooting, those kinda things make for a simulator. There are flight simulators like Flight Simulator, and you are not piloting a real plane, still, it makes for a realistic experience.

thanks as matter of fact i've always wanted to visit Barcelona but anyways i just hope that CSGO will have a starting community to rely on because i can foretell that game will have a rough start since it will try to replace and grow in an enviroment which is fully operated by 1.6 gamers so i think that in my case i would rather see ppl trying to migrate to CSPromod than CS:GO that at the moment doesn't give me any joy whenever I play it :(

There is no point in playing a game which you do not enjoy, the release of CS:GO doesnt mean that people should stop playing CS 1.6, its not mandatory to change. Btw, Barcelona is pretty nice, one of the most beautiful citys in Spain :).

It doesn't matter what any of us type on this forum, What you and everyone else have to understand is as soon as tournaments pick this game up (and they will) we will see teams switch almost instantly because that's where the money will be and with valve rumored to be in talks with MLG this could maybe reignite the Counter-Strike community. The sooner people embrace that the easier it'll be for everyone.

I agree... I know it's no CS 1.6, but sooner or later tournaments will drop CS 1.6 out, and this will come to replace it... I mean, I'd rather have CS GO, than no CS at all, but It's just my opinion. I just think people in here are too closed minded about other games (I used to be like that too with 1.6 being the #1 for me, but I eventually "grew up" and now I share a different opinion).

It doesn't matter about the audience, If leagues pick up the game and they WILL the teams will go where the money is also Alex Garfield once said it's really hard to get new sponsors on board with 1.6 because you cannot goto say Coca-Cola and ask them to invest money in a game that's a decade + old and lets face it looks ugly and outdated. GO is FPS future competitive game, even if GO at the beggining probably will be terrible to play, if u like FPS competitive u should focus on help it development and the game will get better to play faster. If u play CS since 1.3 we can understand that GO can be way better then 1.6. Better game, better competitive cene, more money and people involved!

Oh I agree with you when you say it'll be hard to adapt because 1.6ers have been playing the same version for nearly a decade and obviously some people don't like change but lets face it, Time for change in the CS community has come, It doesn't matter if you play 1.6 or Source, CS:GO will unite the communities and hopefully bring Counter-Strike back to what it used to be in 2005/06 with global competition and not just Europe dominating, Admittedly it'll face challenges because e-sports like SC2 and LoL are established now, This is why I think we need both the 1.6 and Source communities to support GO as much as possible because this is all we have now in terms of a PC-FPS title as an e-sport.

When CSS came out, CS was still 4-5 years old, very old for any game to still be played, and people said with its bad netcode and graphics, no new players would ever come and all sponsors would flock to it, letting Source take over quickly. Now here we are, as you say 8 years later, and the same arguments are being made again. I can compare it like that because precisely the same thing arguments claiming it will die are being used again, only 8 years later.

No, you don't see my point here. First of all there's a major difference between a 5 year old game and a 13 year old game. The quality of rivalling games now are much higher than in 2004. We see a steady decline in prize money, tournaments are dropping cs 1.6 in favor of more popular games, major organizations like mousesports and EG have shut down their cs divisions. It won't be long before the pro's no longer can afford living off cs and the professional scene will plummit. because they have no reason to make a cs2, they already have cs:go to reek in the profits and if it takes off, they will have no reason to make a new game as long as cs:go brings in money. furthermore, i have no idea why anyone thinks this magical cs2 would be any more like cs 1.6 than cs:go - they already clearly decided what cs should be like in their minds. cs2 won't be out in +5 years (probably even more) and it won't most likely be any closer to cs 1.6 than cs:go. why? because by then cs:go WILL be the most popular game, and it makes sense to cater to the cs:go players, not to players of a game that was popular +5 years ago and whose players probably aren't around anymore. sorry to burst your bubble, i still hope 1.6 could stay around somehow but it doesn't seem likely right now.

They have no reason to make a cs2? It looks CS1.6's graphics are great for you. "That's what Counter-Strike is: a game of skill. And this is what CS:GO is: an effort to put anyone who has or should play Counter-Strike into the same game. That's a big enough goal but not a grand enough one to merit the name Counter-Strike 2." 2000-11-01: counter-strike 1.0 2004-03-23: counter-strike: condition zero 2004-08-11: counter-strike: source 2012-08-21: counter-strike: global offensive condition zero was made because of its single player mode for counter-strike (deleted scenes after they changed the studio), it was just to milk out the counter-strike name for more profit. if you have played the game, you will know that it's actually an exact copy of cs 1.6 except nades do not do damage through walls and they have new weapon and player models and sounds. cs:source is a completely new game which was released right after because it was already planned from years ago - condition zero was someone else's project, not valves, but they greenlighted it because the counter-strike name alone will bring in tons of profit. after that, as you can see, there was an eight year break even though cs:source was widely considered a flop and most people didn't like it, showing valve just wanted to milk that game for a longer time while trying to improve it. and once again, like i mentioned before: why would they make a bad game now, then make a cs 1.6 copy 3 years from now to please the players that are no longer around? it's only downhill from here my friend, they're only focused on dota2 now.

it is an entirely new game, being on the same engine doesn't mean much (cs 1.6 is on a modified quake3 engine, tf2 is on source engine and it's not the same game as css/csgo). you think valve spending $30-40k on just flying people to their offices and having 10 months of open beta isn't working hard? you got to be kidding. there will be a cs2 because it will bring in more money and that is what companies strive for (profit) but it won't be any closer to cs 1.6 than cs:go is, and it won't come out within 5 years.

you should take a look at comments on sites such as pc gamer regarding cs:go, all those guys are extremely happy about how the game is going. they will make their money from mass markets, not from esports - everyone will buy the game at $15 = profit. of course if they were a little smarter they would make it a good game and overtime more people would buy it, but i'm sure their market research indicates that battlefield/call of duty -type games make the most money right now :)

well it's not yet a competitive game! if you make a counter-strike you make a game for competitive gaming! they are onto something but they should listen more to professionnal gamers. They also need to make competitive maps, get ride of all useless stuff and obstacles on the map (it is too hard to see enemies and move freely). I recently got this game, and movement+recoiln shit is good. you just have to get used to it. the things that I dont like on this game is the buying menu, its just messy and annoying. and colt should always be on B 4 3. and _NOTHING_ else. And I also miss the "o" buy-option, for equipment and nade etc. and I dont like how the maps are, places that you can see through, like under the trains on de_train, the wheels are circles, and this can be so good/OP if you know how to use it. you can just scope right below the train right where the wheel starts. and on de_nuke like that truck on the upper floor, its so easy to hide. and so hard for the "rusher" to spot you, it will be impossible. its too much source rather than 1.6. and on de_train under the trains, like in 1.6 you could see everywhere from under a train. now, you bearly can see under 1 train. well yeah, its a good game. but things like this has to be fixed (IMO), to get it competitive. and also in darker places there is no snowballs chance in hell to see if its a teammate or not:s: it is like darkgreen-ish T's, and darkblue-ish CT's.

You are all out of your minds. CS 1.6 is dead. No new tournaments in the future will carry cs 1.6 ever again. After a few years, WCG will drop 1.6. Only problem is, you never made a single good point. Or rather, everything you said is what the CS:S community has been saying since 2005, and they, too, have been wrong all along. I've played the game for a bit longer than you, and I still do. Not as much as when I was younger, but that's because I have a job and a rather busy life, so gaming in general has become less of a factor in my everyday life. I've quit CS like 4 times during that time span, but after a bit of time off, it's always felt fresh as ever. I've also always looked forward to the "new versions", like CS:S and ProMod, and of course CS:GO too. But they just haven't been as good, simply put. I'd be the first one to move on IF someone could come up with an actually good alternative, but it seems people are more interested in catering to the casual market, namely the CoD kiddies. Of course they are, that's where the money is. 1.6 is still fun though, and not because I'm afraid to move on, or because my year old ~1,5k€ gaming PC can't run other games. I play 1.6 for it's own sake, and for no other reason.

tell us this. would you still watch football if the players had to now kick into a circular goal instead of the normal goal or even watch basketball if players are allowed to take 3 steps instead of 2 and if the basketball rim is a square shape instead of a circle? (i'm assuming you watch football and basketball since you are from the states) if no, then you need to stop watching those old style of sports because they've been around for ages and they need to change the whole game play completely since it's hella old. they need to embrace the future of a new kind of football and basketball!! my point is, why fuck up the physics and game play of cs1.6 when it's perfect already. all valve needs to do is just fix some bugs, improve the net code, and just update the graphics for all the dumb ass kids out there who want something so "realistic" life to satisfy their psycho nature since they never leave their room.

You can't compare real-life sports to gaming at all. In every sport, everyone uses the same equipment. Every league of every sport for the most part follows the same rules and standards. If you want to play soccer, you just go get a soccer ball. If you want to play CS, you have to get a computer and buy the game. When you play sports, you reap benefits because you are exercising and your body feels good. When you first buy counterstrike, there are no immediate benefits. You will immediately get owned by people who are better than you. You don't want to continue to play the game and you will stop playing. CS has different inputs. Everyone uses a different mouse and keyboard, different configurations, and each tournament has different rules. Sports are always evolving as well. New modifications are always being adapted.... The same thing needs to be done with counterstrike. If you truly believe 1.6 is a perfect game, you haven't played enough first-person shooters.

Riddle me this. Why would 1.6 players give a flying f#ck about the success of the CS franchise and/or Valve's financial well being for that matter ? 1.6 players are not brand blind. They are being faithful to a game, to game mechanics, to a style, to the way things feel when they play, and most importantly, to WHAT THEY LIKE ! Why the hell would they move on to something they don't like. As far as I'm concerned, Valve could be agonizing in the putrid remains of their commercial failures, I wouldn't budge a finger, and I think a lot of people wouldn't either. And it won't happen, because their games appeal to a certain type a people, just not to competitive 1.6 players. Look what happened after the CGS demise, most of the players that made the jump from 1.6 to CSS went back to it or quit playing altogether. Why? Because 1) they liked it better, 2) they understood something that you clearly don't : THERE WILL NOT BE A SUBSTANTIAL, GLOBAL, PROFESSIONAL GAMING SCENE. "Professional" gaming is a niche and will be for the foreseeable future. There are just too many platforms, games, brands, game developers, games publishers, unfair commercial strategies (hello CS clones..), all of them trying to milk gamers worldwide for their money. They are just not enough of us serious gamers for something meaningful to emerge. The good'ol times when PC was king are over, and I don't think cross-platform is gonna change much. Agree with this Duke Nukem. For me it's same as CS:S but gun models looks like in Call Of Duty but they also look a lot like each others. For example I can't tell the diffrence between Glock and Usp, same goes to AWP and SGG20 (scout). And couple of stuff token from Call Of Duty is it has Tazer gun, it's like Call Of Duty knife. It has tons of range and it oneshots to leg. Also I found myself rushing and spraying only when playing this game. It looks exactly like Call Of Duty (with CS:S maps and shitty Source-engine movement) so I automatically just spray and run same time. Luckily I still did fine and went 10/0 almost every game.

What new tournaments? K1 League and Fnatic Play? The money offered by these tournaments relative to the amount of time professional teams practice is chicken scratch. The travel expenses to get to china to play K1 league is more than the tournament offers for second or third place. What a joke... Come on now guys, there could be tons of new tournaments in the next year for cs 1.6 but if the prize pools of these tournaments amount to money that is less than CPL was offering 6 years ago, then there isn't progression in the community at all. Wanting the sequel to be better than the original is natural, and so far all CS sequels have been worse. What I really hate about CS:Go atm is that it takes so fkin much hardware resources. I believe the price is so low because Valve will be integrating an ingame system similar to team fortess 2. Players will be able to use real world currency to buy upgraded gear, hats, camoflauge, and trade them amongst each other. This will bring in a lot of money. Since CS:GO will be released on XBLA we can speculate on its price, the fact of being on XBLA means that it won’t cost as much as a new COD or any other major blockbuster title. The XBLA price range goes from 5$ to 20$, which means it isn’t meant to be a “full new game”. Having leaderboards and matchmaking is one of the requirements for a XBLA title, therefore it isn’t something that it is being done exclusively for the PC version.

Why does everyone want the game to die so the 1.6 community won't divide? I feel like everyone should at least be optimistic about CS:GO as there is still a possibility of it becoming a good competitive game. With most of your attitude's, you're not giving CS:GO even the slightest amount of interest. At least buy the game when it releases and see how you like the game yourself. In my opinion, the game has been improving slightly. Though it has a long way to go to reach the success that 1.6 had in its prime, at least give the game a chance. It's still in beta, it's not like there's zero hope of it being a good game. Be optimistic. It would be awesome for Valve to create a good game that both 1.6 players and Source players enjoy, no? So at least support it while it's still in the beta stage.

impossible satisfy cs and csss players lol , that game is aproached to css players , not to our comunity , but i will still try it, the only thing good about it , its that online we can play in good conditions with almost all players in the world

IRL I have about 15 real friends who play competitive and neither one of them like it,tbh they said it's complete bullshit. From the other hand,I have friend who plays competitive dota 5+ years and he says that Dota2 is classic example how new extension of competitive game can be done.90% of all old dota players like new game,which isnt a case with CS:GO and old CS players. Dota2 is currently #1 in steam stats and its still in beta,can you image what will happen when it comes out and it will be free... CS:GO has about 1k players daily,and not all of them will purchase it when it comes out.

Leaving all the debate and arguments aside about CS:GO being a decent game or not, I think the game will fail anyway. Compare it to games in the market with marketing worth a million pounds and look at the few show cases for this game. The majority of people who actually know about this game are 1.6 and Source players who on majority are not bothered about it. Considering, they also aim towards console gamers, clearly their agenda is to be a successful 'new game' and directly compete against the bigger games out there, which can never happen. so no matter what you think good or bad, the is very likely to fail in the market in terms of business and creating a 'name for itself:

It's way way waaaay too early unless Valve goes totally mental with updates this summer. Right now the game is nowhere near what it needs to be to be played in tournaments... After having been slightly positive about it all, this news made me feel quite a bit worried. Once again it seems as if Valve has not idea what has to be done to the game...

Funny how 98% of the people posting have probably never played any of this to be justified to commentate wether the game is any good or not. Infact what is the weirdest thing is that people don't realise 1.6 has declined and will be out of the picture - sadly but it's just the way it goes. At this point CS:GO is the only valid hope the FPS genre as a whole has to stay on the limelight against SC2 or LoL for example. Corporations that makes esports possible look for marketing possibilities and unfortunately an old game does not seem like an interesting investment - which is what putting money into esports end of the day is. Give the game a chance and stop being overly religious about 1.6 - even as it's the greatest and most passionately followed FPS-game to date. If you wish to see 5on5 fps-action in the future at major events and people being professionals - be constructive in your critisism and opinions. The game has evolved in huge leaps since the first beta came out last year. At this point I actually find it fun and basic fundamentals are more towards CS than what they were initially. Of course theres plenty of issues to be addressed, meaningless to say - but it's not a lost cause.

I totally agree with what you say, and I still believe CS:GO has the opportunity to become something massive. However, I do find it very hard to see how Valve will have enough time to update the game enough to make it appealing to all players from the start. By releasing it too early there is a risk people will try it, dislike it, and then just leave it like that. Since all game makers seems to be completely oblivious to the fact that a competitive fps-game is a huge gold mine, there is no real reason to rush things. Valve should take their time and not release the game until it is actually what the audience wants. I don't even get why they have changed the policy they had when they said they wouldn't release the game until it was ready for the masses. Right now it isn't. Surely it's still 2,5 months left until release, but frankly, there is a shitload of stuff to tweak, change and fix. I doubt they have enough time...

had the beta for months. the company has alot of trust issues, like a lack of paying attention to game mechanic detail, when they say "oh this will merge communities... oh wait bla blah blah we want monies we make game like mw5 and bf15" in short, game is bad, don't waste 15$, save that money for cs2. (imo, csgo was made to get casual kiddies into the game, make the game popular console side, make some kids playing console think they are 'true' pros, etc. cs2? well, if they [valve] are geniuses, everyone will switch over upon a successful beta of cs2...)

CS 1.6 WILL fall eventually... but CS:GO will not be the reason for it. 1.6 is loved for how simple yet so complex it is... it has mechanics of a 2000-ish game, yet offers possibilities for strategies, tactics, etc like no other game on the market. It's unique in it's way, and no other CS could capture that uniqueness yet. What WILL kill 1.6 in my opinion is the fact that new players prefer going to other games than coming to 1.6 (LoL, Dota, CoD, BF, etc), for better graphics, more realism and so forth. I already feel a drop in CS 1.6 population. It's local, on the servers I usually play, some of them losing a ton of players (i.e 2 DM servers that used to be full; now one is completely empty 24/7, the other with 5-10/21 players), but it's quite obvious. The "old school" stops playing and there is not enough "new school" to take their place.
