Thorin removed from casting crew

British caster Duncan "Thorin" Shields has been removed by the ESL from the casting crew for EMS One Katowice following some inappropriate comments made about Poland.

Shields had been hired by the ESL to work as an analyst throughout EMS One Katowice, but as the first matches were played, the spectators were left wondering where the British caster was.

It turned out that Shields had been fired by the ESL over some inappropriate comments he made about Poland during a recent podcast of the 'Unfiltered' show.

Among other things, Shields labelled Poland "one of the worst countries in Europe" and compared the ESL staging the event in Katowice to the Olympics being held in Africa, esportsheaven reports.

Over at reddit, ESL's Head of Commentary, Paul "ReDeYe" Chaloner, commented on this issue, saying:

"Duncan ‘Thorin’ Shields has been removed from the analyst/commentary position for the EMS One Katowice broadcast due to his comments about Poland that he made on a recent podcast ‘Unfiltered’.

"ESL does not stand by or tolerate acts of racism, xenophobia or other forms of discrimination and does not wish to be associated or employ those who make any such comments. We are deeply upset that a long time member of the esports community would display such ignorance and make highly inappropriate comments about an entire nation.

"Thorin’s tirade has offended not only the live audience of the show he was hired to work on, but the entire Polish production team that he was going to be a part of.

"I have spoken to Thorin directly this morning. It has been made clear to him that his comments were totally unacceptable and inconsistent with ESL’s ethos.

"It is unfortunate that we have to do this on the first day of the EMS One Katowice show, but we are hard at work to replace Thorin on the show and rest assured are determined to bring a great show regardless."

The casting lineup for EMS One Katowice now looks as follows:

No it doesn't. He has the freedom to say these things, but that doesn't mean it won't get consequenses. He won't be legally punished(hence the freedom of speech), but ESL has the right to put actions towards him because of it. Just because you are legally free to say something doesn't mean it won't get consequenses elsewhere. And still, you can't say anything you want legally either. For instance I can't threaten your life on the basis of freedom of speech.

When he talks about polish people leaving Poland, I just don't see anything insultive about that. Especially considering it's 1. true and 2. most of what he said was at least in a joking mood. I didn't listen to the Africa quote, but from the way it reads, it seems to me more like a poke at the developed countries - "and then everyone just leaves and they’re still in the dirt". I'm not saying there's no offense to be taken from his remarks, and I'm aware that it was probably not the smartest thing to say publically one day away from working among poles in Poland, I just find it shocking how a minute of speaking your mind on a random show, however exaggerated his opinions may be, can get you fired for reasons that are arguably equally as exaggerated.

Good decision. I've only been following the CS scene for like a year and every time I come across this Thorin guy I get annoyed. He constantly talks shit, his attitude and everything about him is EXTREMELY ARROGANT. The arrogance in his voice disgusts me. No, it's not. Poland was the only European country showing growth during the years of recent economic crisis. GDP (PPP) per capita is only half of that of Germany, which is not bad at all. Polish public health care, no matter what the malcontents say, is one of the best in EU. Polish citizens are not prescribed Paracetamol for every illness the way it is done in the UK. Polish public education is second only to Finland's. As for politics, unless we get rid of democracy, nothing can be changed.

Poland has an unemployment rate of 14% which is really high. 2012 Poland was the third poorest country in EU only topped by Bulgaria and Romania in terms of GDP. About your educational system I must wonder in what way that was measured? In the end I can't believe that the general polish citizen is better educated than for example the general swedish citizen. You might have a decent healthcare system, in terms of what goes in and what comes out. 7% of your GDP goes into healthcare, compared to Swedens 9%. What difference this makes in the end I don't really know from the top of my head. I also haven't experienced Polish healthcare so I can't make a general judgement myself. But focusing on the two points that I made in the top. With such poor rates it's inevitable that problems will arise. It just always does when there is alot of poverty. As for the politics, I guess you are right.

Sadly,alot of what he has said is true. Bad roads,hulligans,racism in poland is huge aswell. But that coming from a person that is watched by alot of viewers all around world and it that kind of a way where it sounds like all poland people are racist or living in caves is really really bad thing. hahaha that shit was hysterical. on the serious side of things I can see how many polish people can feel a little offended by what he just said. Poland has a shaky history, especially during the 20st century it was opressed by nations around it. also making fun of people who had to leave everything behind to seek work and prosperity because they had no other choice (they really didn't!) is just idiotic on Thorin's part. I think he just wanted to be funny but he crossed the line a little. :D

Since I don't really give a shit about others opinion I don't think I'd be offended by Thorin talking shit about my homeland. Yet I can see that what he did was really inappropriate and I completely understand you and any other polish person who took it personally. He needed to be kicked out from the event. Also an apology from him would be obligatory but knowing Thorin I don't think that'll ever happen.

He's actually constantly slipping up and saying thick unnecessary things about teams/players. Example: While listing the team lineups with the pics at a recent lan, he got to jw and said "JW, well JW just looks like a fish". Now i cant remember whether he said fish/pig/duck, it doesn't matter. I don't care if the whole of HLTV says this about JW, it's completely inappropriate for a "professional analyst" to say something like that live on stream. Never mind that, i think it's inappropriate for people to comment on other's appearances like this, but hey kids will be kids. The guy is clearly socially inept and cant control what comes out of his mouth. This time around he just so happened to offend the country that he was going to be working in, like the complete oblivious fool that he is. Its unbelievable to me that you would offer any support.
