ESL and ESEA to host $1 million league

ESL and ESEA have partnered up to create a global CS:GO league with $1 million in cash prizes.

Named the ESL ESEA Pro League, this new competition will be divided into two invitational divisions, one in Europe and one in North America, featuring 24 teams, 12 per region.

Weekly matches will be played online in ESEA's servers, with ESL's arenas in Cologne and Los Angeles hosting the global finals, where the top teams from each region will face each other.

ESL joins forces with ESEA for a super CS:GO league

Two ESL ESEA Pro League seasons will be held in 2015, with $500,000 up for grabs in each one of them, making it a combined $1 million purse for this year.

"ESL started out with Counter-Strike more than fifteen years ago," said ESL managing director Ralf Reichert.

"Now, many years later, we are extremely excited to be in a position where we can take the industry to the next level with the first regular US$500,000 Counter-Strike league together with ESEA."

Despite the fact that this is already by far the biggest prize purse in the history of CS:GO, ESL and ESEA have vowed to increase the amount of money on offer for future editions as they attempt to "strengthen the competitive scene".

"ESEA is where the pros play, it's been that way for more than a decade, and combining our league expertise, a million dollars, and ESL's exceptional production quality represents a major milestone for everyone who loves Counter-Strike," ESEA president and CEO Eric Thunberg said.

More information about the ESL ESEA Pro League, which is scheduled to start on May 4, will be released in the coming days.

ESL's plans of tying teams down to exclusivity deals are seemingly dead in the water, according to a report by the Daily Dot, following "numerous concerns" from several parties involved in the negotiations.

But even if limiting the teams' involvement in other tournaments is off the table, the prospect of seeing top-flight sides put all their focus on this super CS:GO league appears to be very real as players often have to deal with a packed schedule and the subsequent lack of time to prepare for the big events.

ESL ESEA Pro League The best teams from Europe and North America will compete in the ESL ESEA Pro League. The teams will face off in a round robin league separated into two divisions (Europe and North America) with twelve team in each of them. This means that all teams within the region will face off against each other twice per season. Teams will play their matches over several weeks in a best of 1 format with preselected maps. Each match will be streamed on Twitch for all CSGO fans to watch.

^so much this. In LoL and sc2 even alot of Koreans, who are superior to Na and EU, are moving to NA because they smell the easy money. I think thats what will happen in CSGO aswell.

Yeah they are moving to SA too. We have some koreans in our LoL scene. Brazilian teams actually spend a lot of money in LoL teams, since the community is huge here and they have a good return. Some of them even have gaming houses. The investment is too far away from what kabum/keyd spent with CSGO, sadly

WOOOOW. NOOOOT. Isn't it ESEA who already has 700k in prize money through the whole league? Or was it FACEIT. Can't remember. 300k more is not that much of a step up. Sure its nice. But not much to be hyped up about.

ARTICLE IN FULL World’s largest Counter-Strike league to be hosted by ESL and ESEA Million dollar prize pool for 2015’s best Counter-Strike teams from North America and Europe. (Los Angeles, CA) April 28, 2015 - ESL, the world's largest esports company, and ESEA, the world's largest competitive Counter-Strike community, are set to host the biggest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive league in the game's history. For 2015, the league has committed to paying out US$1,000,000 in prize money to the world's best teams, in addition to full travel support for offline finals. The ESL ESEA Pro League will see prize money increase over the coming years as it strives to strengthen the competitive scene. Starting May 4th, the new competitive esports league is the result of two esports giants looking to grow and sustain the global Counter-Strike scene. ESL, together with ESEA, bring almost thirty years of combined experience in high quality esports production and broadcasting to what will be the world's most prestigious Counter-Strike league. ESL's state-of-the-art esports arenas in both Cologne (Germany) and Los Angeles (US) will host the league's four day offline season finals in 2015. Multi-month Pro League seasons scheduled around Valve-supported majors aim to consolidate the Counter-Strike market by providing consistent high quality content to the global esports audience. Initially split across North America and Europe, Pro League will encompass one division per region, and will consist of twelve invited teams per division. Weekly matches will be held online, protected by ESEA's industry leading anti-cheat client, with an offline final for each division in North America and Europe. "ESL started out with Counter-Strike more than fifteen years ago. Now, many years later, we are extremely excited to be in a position where we can take the industry to the next level with the first regular US$500,000 Counter-Strike league together with ESEA" said Ralf Reichert, Managing Director of ESL. "ESEA is where the pros play, it's been that way for more than a decade, and combining our league expertise, a million dollars, and ESL's exceptional production quality represents a major milestone for everyone who loves Counter-Strike," said Eric Thunberg, President & CEO of ESEA.

Just checked the site. pro.eslgaming.com/csgo/proleague/ It says "World's largest Counter-Strike League $1,000,000 in total prize money for 2015" So thats what, ESL Katowice + Cologne already 500k and ESEA 144k. Then theres 356k $ left for another tournament? If thats the case then this "league" is just some bullsh*t. Or do they not count Katowice cuz Valve sponsored it with cash?

No but they could be part of one larger league, as some kind of final tournament with the largest prize pool. Like the play offs in NBA or NHL or any sports league with play offs after the main season.

This is good. Much better than the rumors (if this is the same thing). Most important part: "Weekly matches will be played online in ESEA's servers" It's incredibly important that it's online, and not offline. Being offline like LCS would limit the participating teams greatly. Hyped. Should be good.

Its not a charity league. Its for the best teams and biggest scenes (even NA sucks, they have at least some proper teams). KeyD and Vox/Immunity are the only teams outside NA/EU who are good enough to compete with these teams. Not worth making any league...

So after every season the top say 5 or so from each region will play at either cologne or LA? Initially it looked like it would be 250k per season per region for the finals. Are you sure?

They won't make a SA league. Keyd is the only team worth something here to compete for 1 million. Keyd would have to move to NA

This could be good. Explicit exclusivity isn't needed. If you make the best tournament it will naturally attract top contenders. With a league like this, top teams could afford to skip some smaller tournaments which in turn would widen the competitive team pool. Lesser teams could financially justify staying full time pro. However, in my mind the Valve sponsored events would still be the majors.

That's good, but why don't they host only one event with all teams? Sure, it will boost both scenes, but it would be much better if all teams would meet in the finals, and not separate NA and EU.

Yes. I do, for example. And all people who care about the CS:GO scene should want NA to join the biggest events, as well as South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania. A healthy scene is a global one.

think eswc had around 200 000$ 1 year and WEG used to have pretty big prizepools around 150 000 and tons was around 100 000
