NiP sign REZ; friberg steps down

Ninjas in Pyjamas have announced the signing of Fredrik “REZ” Sterner from Epsilon.

The 19-year-old will replace Adam "⁠friberg⁠" Friberg, who has stepped down from the active roster, bringing an end to a long association that began in August 2012, when the NiP brand was revived by Emil "⁠HeatoN⁠" Christensen.

Fredrik "⁠REZ⁠" Sterner becomes the second player to join Ninjas in Pyjamas from Epsilon, following in the footsteps of William "⁠draken⁠" Sundin, who signed for the team in March.

The Swedish giants hoped that by bringing in a dedicated AWPer to replace Jacob "⁠pyth⁠" Mourujärvi they would be able to end a run of poor form that had seen them miss the ELEAGUE Major.

REZ will play for NiP

But results continued to worsen even after injecting some new blood as Ninjas in Pyjamas finished 9th-11th at the SL i-League StarSeries Season 3, 5th-6th at cs_summit, 10th in ESL Pro League and 12th-14th in the closed qualifier for the Europe Minor, which meant that, for the second time in a row, they would sit out the biggest event in the world.

REZ is widely regarded as one of the most talented young players hailing from Scandinavia. He holds a LAN Rating of 1.15 and his biggest achievements to date are winning the World Cyber Arena Finals and placing 5th-8th at WESG.

"I am extremely happy to have been given the opportunity to play for NiP,” he told NiP’s website. “This is a dream for every player who is working their way into the top scene.

"Together with the NiP team, I strongly believe we will reach the top. Reuniting with draken is also something that I am really looking forward to as he has been a longtime teammate and a close friend.

"I am stoked to continue my career together with him and the other guys at NiP.”

friberg’s future is unclear at this point, but HLTV.org knows that the 25-year-old remains contracted to Ninjas in Pyjamas and will be offered a position within the organization if he does not continue playing.

While representing Ninjas in Pyjamas, friberg won several international titles, including one Major, ESL One Cologne 2014. He also helped the team to finish second at four other Valve-sponsored tournaments, between 2013 and 2015.

"Our change took longer than what a normal esports team would have done, but again, we are not a normal esports team," NiP explained.

"The ties between players, management and staff are extremely tight, we all consider each other as best friends and a true family."

If allu was their best player then how come f0rest and gtr were placed in better position in top 20 list of 2015? Maikelele was never their best player. The fact that you even consider pyth to be their best player proves that you are just a hater of those core players.he sucked whole year. He was the one who lost them that match vs Navi at esl cologne . Even friberg was better than pyth and friberg had tougher roles(utility player in both pistol rounds and entry fragger).

Because their 5th has always had to adapt to whatever role they had left. In the case of pyth, they forced him to pick up the AWP at every opportunity even when he didn't feel like it. And judging his whole time with nip on one game is a joke. You can do that with every single player in the world. Meanwhile, GTR and f0rest always got the roles they wanted the most. Oh and friburger hadn't been a true entry fragger for quite a while, I hope you realise that.

That guy is right . Pyth was terrible. You do know that pyth was awping as CT player , right? f0rest was their main awper in their t-sides which is 10x times harder than awping as ct. GTR gave up his lurker role which he has been doing since 1.6 and did some entryfragging also. Sometimes you have to do what is necessary for the team even though you "dont like it." I dont get it. What do you mean adapt to whatever role that is left? They picked up allu and maikelele to be their main awpers. They knew what they are getting into. I dont even want to talk about pyth. He was their worst player in terms of impact. I can accept that kicking allu was a mistake but kicking pyth and maikelele was required.

Yep Maikelele when he came back for that tourney was better than when he first played with them, and was the right style of AWPer to have especially for a short term so people can't adapt to the new team. draken is a great pickup though, thinking longer term he could be a superstar if he's committed enough pyth just turned out to be too inconsistent tho right ? only paid attention to him a few games when he stood out, but you're only as good as your average games, highs and lows mean less

But XIZT is more firepower than pronax and has the mind to lead a new team with these 5 players. It's gonna take a good deal of time but it should be worth it. If these 5 players had the tactics and teamplay (years of synergy in a mostly unchanged system) of Astralis there would be no problem. IMO give them time to develop a system around the new young star players and adapt ! the old core don't need to be out duelling the best players of today if they build around the young guns. They'll do fine as support/anchor/clutch etc type players if they work hard enough on it as a new team and new style. Just putting new players in and giving them the roles that were vacated won't change much, long term the flaws in the old structure and mentality will just resurface. If they can't change mentality/decision making eventually just replace them all one day. Either way I like the direction NiP is going, THREAT didn't get a chance to go deep enough into rebuilding the team, now there is a chance they change almost everything and get the most out of their guys

That's a big mistake in my opinion. Friberg is a really good player, I know he had some bad monts, but I have to say that he's a really good player and he was playing good recently. I don't know what to say really, good luck NiP and I hope it wasn't a big mistake, but we'll see in the upcoming tournament.

EDIT: On a serious note, Friberg did extremely well on the couch at CS_Summit, he was great on the mic with some decent banter and he had some interesting play-by-play analysis too. Even though Friberg has been playing awful the last Year and a Half. Another unproven Tier 3 player? Even though Rez is the same boat as Draken and Draken is a Top player on Nip now. Just because they don't play on a Tier 1 or 2 team doesn't mean they don't have the potential to do well on a Tier 1 or 2 team. Thats why every great player doesn't start on the best possible team.

NIP surely knows how to milk their fans with all the marketing generated given that NIP is currently overratedly ranked as #17. They can barely beat tier 3 teams atm. The only Swedish person in top 10 teams atm is RobbaN, which is coach for FaZe. L U L

Who will be next as young players take over ? Makes sense, NiP can acquire and establish young talents and build for the future, new players with eager mentality and not at all set in their ways, keen af to play hard and learn and become a star, and NiP can sign them to long contracts as they become worth it, giving a strong foundation ? Can't stop progress, in every sport a new generation always comes along, the bar always raises as the new generations take over.. nothing to be sad about.
