North have announced that they have promoted Daniel "mertz" Mertz from their academy team to replace René "cajunb" Borg on their main roster.

The move follows North's disappointing campaign at ELEAGUE Major Boston, where they went out of the New Legends Stage with a shocking 0-3 record following defeats to Vega Squadron, Astralis and BIG.

The Danish side had come under pressure after a series of disappointing results had seen them end 2017 as only the ninth-best team in the world. During that year, the former dignitas team reached the final of three international events but won just one title, at DreamHack Open Montreal, as they fell short to G2 at both ESL Pro League Season 5 Finals and DreamHack Masters Malmö.

René "⁠cajunb⁠" Borg, who has been moved to the bench for the time being, had been part of the team since May 2016, when he was involved in the trade deal that saw Markus "⁠Kjaerbye⁠" Kjærbye move to Astralis from the then-dignitas squad. He had the worst tournament rating of North at ELEAGUE Major Boston, 0.73, after finishing all three matches in the red.

mertz is North's new AWPer

In a statement, North Director of Esports Jonas "⁠whimp⁠" Svendsen stressed that the organisation "needs to win titles" - a goal that he believes Daniel "⁠mertz⁠" Mertz will help them to reach.

The 19-year-old had long been tipped to break into the organisation’s main squad as soon as the opportunity arose. In 2017, he averaged a 1.18 rating on LAN and had above-average tournament ratings in all but two of the events he attended.

"I am honored to be given the opportunity to take a step up," mertz stated. "This is the reason I joined North Academy and what I have been working so hard for in the last ten months.

"I am ready to give it my all and help North kick ass again", said Daniel “mertz” Mertz about the chance."

The announcement comes just a week after North brought Alexander "⁠ave⁠" Holdt over from the academy squad to coach their main roster, replacing Casper "⁠ruggah⁠" Due, who had been part of the team’s setup since May 2016.

mertz will make his first appearance for North at the $150,000 cs_summit 2, which will run from February 8-11 in Los Angeles, California.

cajun is way too pasive with an awp for a team that aspire to win events, if teams wants to win they need an awper that will take inniciative from time to time, make an opening, that is one of the reasons why FaZe needed to kick Allu, he wasn't bad but they needed someone more aggresive, not someone who will hold the same angle for a minute, playing like this is good enough for tier 2 teams but definitely not for tier 1 teams.

The issue is, they need an AWPer, CajunB goes missing on T sides, and CT sides against stronger AWPers than he. Aizy has improved in the last few months, even though Norths results have gone down. I think age is one of the biggest factors. Finally, Cajun was always a big personality, potentially clashing with MSL. Although I think both moves are required.

Even with clashing personalities, which isn't always the worst thing in the world, Cajun at this point is still insanely versatile and brings a lot to any team he is on. What aizy does for North now, I think Cajun can do better (imo). ... This is just another case of an MSL team putting a good rifler into the AWP role, watching him struggle, and cutting him (without addressing any other problems). North still won't be winning titles with how the roles of MSL/valde/k0nfig/aizy work though.

It was either mertz or jUGI - it's a shame really... Cajunb is a solid fragger all-round and I think aizy was the most underwhelming at the Major aside from that one game. Yeah, honestly I feel like aizy's the one who should've been cut from the team. Cajunb is still a good rifler, and in my opinion he's more versatile than aizy. Still, the change happened now, so we can only hope for North to finally have some success and cajun to continue playing well on another team, be it as a rifler or as an AWPer.

Yeah agreed. I digressed my point more in this atrocious topic: hltv.org/forums/threads/1682229/msl-bot Overall I feel he was unjustifiably cut from the team as statistics wise he's actually better than most. People are blaming MSL for the change, yet he only has an opinion and it was North Management that made the change, not MSL. On paper it would be a good idea to bring a new talent from the academy team up in place of Cajunb - doesn't matter whether we see the move as unjustified or not in actuality. I can understand the logic behind the decision, I just think it was unjust is all. At one point in 2016 I called aizy the best Danish player in CS:GO because of his stint in Dignitas at the god and FaZe as the clutcher. He was the perfect player and therefore on paper the move to North (second best Danish team) was actually good. It's a shame nothing more came from that, sadly... I like Aizy a lot and he still has some of those moments, but the cobblestone game against BIG saw aizy practically missing from the server. Mind you - all of the players didn't really turn up and they were obviously nervous AND pressured from Tabsen and Nex's constant surge of performances and impact-rounds.

I can only agree to all that. And unfortunately people tend to judge too quickly over the smallest of things. One reason that MSL has this reputation within this community is that apparently he had forced Pimp into the AWPing role, but what many seem not to know is that Pimp wanted to be an AWPer, or at least he wanted it so that his team could progress. Pimp also mentioned in a video of Thooorin how him and MSL had their differences between their ideologies of how to play the game, and now some people seem to think that just because Pimp was kicked from the team (I can't exactly remember how he was kicked), MSL must be the initiator of this kick aswell, and even better, people believe that it was the same reason again with him forcing cajunb into the AWPing role. As for aizy, ever since the end of 2015 up until the start of 2017 I wanted him to replace RUBINO in North (I'm talking about the lineup that had Magisk), but just a month before that move actually happened, I started to doubt it, since I wasn't sure as to how North would efficiently work out their support system without neglecting the AWPing role. In the end my concerns appeared to become true, since Magisk unfortunately dropped off by a lot. It's not as though I'm trying to blame aizy, but I'm afraif that this change was not at all what North needed, even if RUBINO left on his own.

Yeah... a very good post here indeed. It's unfortunate the timing was off within the Danish scene at the time, otherwise I think a pretty strong team would've been in the works. MSL overall is a very strict IGL much like Ex6TenZ, so Pimp, cajunb and obviously aizy were far too constricted in comparison to there other roles. Whilst MSL is mostly innocent in all of his accusations, he's not exactly the kindest IGL in the world. People accuse MSL outright of being the main problem with North, but I disagree with this entirely. He's a fantastic IGL overall and despite his mid-round calls leading them into a ditch, I think he should be respected for the work he does for North, not disliked, disrespected or wrongly accused.

I completely agree, in terms of tactics MSL is doing one of the best jobs that an IGL can do in my opinion. He is very strict, which can be both productive and counterproductive, but he's no bad IGL by any means. And sure, he's not the kindest IGL out there, but I agree that regardless of that he should at least be respected for his efforts. After all, he's putting in all this work and being unkind at times exactly because he wants his team to win. One cannot blame him for that, really.

It had to happen, sadly cajunb was a victim of msl's system and had to play for the longest time out of his confort zone.. It worked for a while, but it clearly wasn't working anymore. I'm surprised they didn't get jugi tho, I think he'd have been the perfect fit
