NRG qualify for StarSeries i-League S5

NRG continue their tear in online competitions, qualifying for another LAN—this time the StarSeries i-League Season 5.

The tournament will take place in Kiev, Ukraine on May 28 - June 3, with $300,000 up for grabs. StarSeries i-League S5 is expected to have the same format as the preceding season, with BO3 Swiss System being used in the 16-team group stage and single-elimination playoffs following.

NRG breezed through the North American qualifier

The North American qualifier for the tournament featured the likes of Rogue and Complexity, who made their way through the group stage, and the likes of Renegades and NRG who got invited directly to the bracket stage. The latter two teams showed the most in the playoffs, with NRG 2-0'ing Swole Patrol and Luminosity to reach the grand final, while Renegades defeated eUnited 2-0 before achieving a hard-fought victory over Complexity.

The grand final saw Train being played first, with Renegades' pistol round win being returned on instantly by Damian "daps" Steele's squad, who then went to take the 5-1 CT-side lead. Renegades made it competitive for the rest of the half, finishing only 9-6 down, but were blown out in the second half and NRG soon closed it out 16-8.

Overpass followed, where NRG would once again grab a good start on the CT side. Renegades took the first gun round, but an instant reset from the side of NRG left them in a tough spot and allowed them to only muster one more round for the half (13-2). After the switch, the North American side closed out the game promptly, finishing it 16-3 and taking the series.

Currently, only three teams for StarSeries i-League Season 5 are known. One CIS and two European teams are set to grab spots through their respective qualifiers, while the remaining spots at the 16-team event will be filled through invites.

The following teams are now confirmed for StarSeries i-League Season 5:

This was quite the amazing showing from NRG. They were all really good from an individual point of view and as a team they all played really well. They went really aggressive as CTs at times early in the rounds but always with trade possibility and it always worked in the team's favor and caught Renegades off guard. CeRq is just a machine overall. Good positioning, always smart in his peeks, mixing up his angles, playing for the team and pretty much having an impact in every round. Definitely my favorite player at the moment and will certainly be one of the best AWPers in the world very soon. Everyone performed great at an individual level and the team-work, mid-game calls, trades, executes, etc. all looked on point. This team has now qualified for 4 offline events and I'm really excited to see what they can do next week in Sydney. Astralis will be a big test and a good learning curve for this team.
