Astralis beat Liquid to win ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals

Astralis successfully defended their ESL Pro League title and collected a landmark fourth Intel Grand Slam title with a 3-1 victory over Liquid.

The North American team still made a fight of the series, shocking Astralis on their own map pick, but after that, the Danes looked a class above. Liquid leave Odense with yet another painful grand final defeat, their sixth at a Big Event in 2018 and the fourth against Astralis, who won the $1 million Intel Grand Slam prize on top of the $250,000 cheque from the Pro League event.

The series kicked off on Train, Astralis' map pick after watching Nuke get straight out banned by Liquid. It was meant to be a curve ball thrown at the North Americans, who had not played on this map in the last three months, but the Danes quickly came to regret that choice.

Liquid got off to a blazing fast start on the Terrorist side, giving up just one of the initial eight rounds of the game. It was only then that Astralis put their foot down and held back the North Americans, but their recovery was halted by a 1v3 clutch by Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski, with the half ending with an 11-4 scoreline.

Astralis looked somewhat livelier in the second half, a 1v2 clutch by Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth in the 18th round frustrating Liquid after they had bought up. The North American side would not let a comeback happen, however, and took control of the game once they had money in the bank, stringing five rounds together en route to a surprising 16-8 finish.

Astralis win their second consecutive EPL title

EliGE carried his form into Mirage and opened up the action with a quad-kill in the pistol round to put Liquid in the lead. Astralis responded only in the fifth round, with Emil "Magisk" Reif then turning the hero as he picked up four kills on the B site before Xyp9x won the decisive 1v1.

The 23-year-old played a decisive role in Astralis' recovery with two more clutches, one of them in a 1v4 situation to give his team the lead for the first time in the series. It would not last, though, as Liquid came fighting back to win the final five rounds of the half and take a 9-6 lead.

With Nicolai "device" Reedtz having had very little impact throughout the first half, Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander took matters into his own hands with a quad kill in the pistol round, sending the crowd into wild celebration.

Liquid hit back in the third round, but their economy would soon be reset as Astralis won back-to-back rounds with defuses in the nick of time. gla1ve went huge in the next round with an anti-eco ace, taking his personal tally to 27 frags, with Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen then taking centre stage with the AWP to push the team to a 16-11 win.

Liquid had to settle for second place yet again

Inferno began with another great round by Xyp9x, who outplayed two opponents in the pistol round. That win was immediately traded back by Liquid, though, as the North Americans responded on a force buy following three kills by EliGE.

Liquid rode that momentum to carve out a 4-1 lead, but an eco round put shifted the momentum in favour of the Danes, who were on the front foot for the rest of the half as they brought the scoreline to 10-5.

The North American team came out of the break with all guns blazing, winning the first three rounds and then instantly countering Astralis' win on the back of a 1v2 clutch by Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken. Liquid looked to be in control as they restored parity at 11-11, but they surprisingly fell off the pace in the late stages, with the home side setting up a tight defense to lock down the map at 16-11 and take the lead in the series.

Astralis carried their momentum into Dust2 as they hopped out to a 4-0 lead on the CT side. Liquid then finally put their foot down to take the lead, and they held back the home side's late double-AWP setup to close out the half with a narrow 8-7 advantage.

The Danish team got off to a dream start to the second half, winning seven rounds in a row to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats. Liquid were unwilling to go down without a fight, though, and made a slight comeback, only to be dealt a heavy blow as Astralis won a round with four pistols to hit championship point - an opportunity they would not let go to waste.

Nice try from liquid, but I still believe that had MIBR somehow gotten to the finals, they would've put up a better fight. Sad to see a team being allowed to be the dominant one for so long with no adequate competition, really saturates the scene and bores the viewers. Wish some worthy opponents rise up and find some faults in this near perfect team of the name Astralis.

are you high? no one is allowing them to be so dominant, they are because of their raw talent and work ethic. EVERY other team is working as hard as they can to keep pace with Astralis, but like them or hate them, they're head and shoulders above any other team playing cs right now. I do agree that MiBR seems to give them the biggest challenge though.

Astralis is definitely working more than everyone else and it shows that their hardwork is paying off in loads. However, I don't agree that it's not possible to defeat them, as it's been seen that they often have gaps and shortcomings that teams sometimes are able to advantage of until the window closes and Astralis removes any sight of weakness. A team with a dynamic role structure and a top notch IGL can find the faults that can be targeted when facing Astralis and I'm just a little disappointed to see no one trying bizarre ideas when facing the team as it seems that's all that works against them best.

Astralis can, and frequently do drop maps or series against teams - I agree with that. However, the closing of the window you mention is more on Astralis' ability to analyze, adapt, and overcome. They are not a static team at all, they switch things up enough to make it extraordinarily difficult to consistently beat them, as proven by how often they bounce back in tournaments that losing a series doesn't eliminate them from. Compare that to someone like MouseSports who had a great run of form, and instantly dropped off when teams suddenly started analyzing them and anti stratting them. Its night and day. To say other teams are simply allowing Astralis to dominate the cs scene like your original post is simply not true

basically Astralis is the only team rn that uses situational tactics and have such good teamwork that their adaptibility is two to three times better than any other. They know exactly when to rotate and they have full trust in each other. It's the same reason that every top team in every sport perform constantly. Work ethic, trust, morale and belief in their ability is what makes consistency happen. Such a shame people haven't figured this shit out yet after so long...

Most weird team ever. Well its so obvious right now that they are not clean. After watching every single match of Astralis im very disappointed. They won, being so Lucky and using cheats without any shame. Goddamit that was ugly. Hope they will stop. Bg smokestralis you are a disgrace for esport. GG TL at least you tried.

Most pro CS:GO players among the top 30 teams believe Astralis is the best team to ever play CS:GO and you, no one, may say anything you want. Joke is on you, of course. But only the joke. hfgl

Great job Astralis. There was nothing boring about them. It's not Liquids fault non of your other teams can do any better. I see you toxic fanboys screaming "wasted final spot", but best liquid to take it or quit crying. See you in the next finals ;D

Agree with every single point you just made. Liquid definitely best of the rest. They put up a better fight, than any other team would have done. They crushed all other teams especially in playoffs. People saying Astralis is playing boring CS, is probably too stupid to appreciate innovative new strats and enjoy their clinical execution. They just want 5 s1mpel players Ramboing around, making high skilled individual plays

So boring and one sided, Tier 1 CS is just Astralis outstrating everyone every tournament...it's not hate for Astralis, but NaVi, Liquid and MiBR are just disappointing

Bottom on the scoreboard in the most important match for Astralis, BO5 final nonetheless, yet device is gonna get the MVP once again, and eventually the top1 of 2018... complete and utter joke. :)

Glave MVP OF 2018! Not even close.. He does so many things well, the most insane combination of team tactics, game skills, and mental toughness. Astralis was average without him.. What an amazing story this team is.
