Astralis beat Liquid in two maps; to face NRG in semi-finals

Astralis dominated Liquid on Vertigo, 16-8, and ground their way to victory on Overpass, 16-13, to secure the semi-final spot against NRG.

A kill on the defuser by Nick "⁠nitr0⁠" Cannella early in the pistol round propelled Liquid to an early lead. Down by three, Astralis were able to win a forcebuy as Nicolai "⁠device⁠" Reedtz traded a frag in a 2vs2 and took out nitr0 to win the clutch. Liquid were able to win a retake with the match tied to take the lead back following an A execute. A chaotic round on B ended with the Danes tying it back up early on. Having taken the economic advantage, Astralis started to run away with the half although a late push by Liquid as they tightened up their defenses ended up with an 8-7 scoreline in favor of the Danes.

A 4vs3 retake by Astralis on A made it 9-7. Aftrer winning against a forcebuy and an eco, Emil "⁠Magisk⁠" Reif played a brilliant flank on the A attackers taking down three to further his team’s lead to 12-7. Three kills from device to stop an A attack put Astralis within one of match point, and with Liquid unable to retaliate the European squad went to lock down the series lead with a 16-8 scoreline.

Astralis won the quarter-final duel against the top-ranked team

Liquid took the lead on Overpass with Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken downing three CT players. Four kills by Lukas "⁠gla1ve⁠" Rossander on a forcebuy put Astralis on the board, 1-4, severely maiming Liquid’s economy. Astralis started to gain ground as Liquid struggled with executes with the map evening out 5-5. Multi-kill rounds by Keith "⁠NAF⁠" Markovic, who had previously been having low impact, helped his team take the lead back. Up 8-6 in the last round, Jonathan "⁠EliGE⁠" Jablonowski managed to win a 1vs2 situation on six health to give his side the three-round lead at the half.

Astralis won the second pistol round with a play towards A, but Liquid bought a minimal buy with upgraded pistols and USPs to hit double digits, 10-7. After giving up the anti-eco, device won a 1vs3 clutch with an SG553 to keep the match close. Astralis then started to hit B, finding a weakness in Liquid’s defense to turn the match on its head and take the lead into the last stretch, 13-11. The North Americans finally found the way to stop a B attack, bringing it back to within one. Both teams then traded rounds, making it 14-13 for Astralis. The B site ended up being Liquid's Achilles heel as the Danish team exploited it to get on match point, with Astralis closing it the following round against a forcebuy, 16-13.

actually the astralis core had the same problem with peaking at the wrong time. it wasnt until they got kjaerbye that they worked around peaking at the majors. looks like it worked for them pretty well.

Pressure. They hyped the Liquid-Astralis major match so much the boys just cracked. Astralis is much more experienced in that sort of pressure (i.e. being at the top and being expected to win) But also, it just wasn't that good of a tournament for liquid. GG Astralis. Hopefully there will be a rematch next major.

Eh. The break hurt them compared to a lot of the competition. But honestly all of the "top" teams looked bad (except ENCE leading into that Renegades match). NRG actually look like they could go the distance, too bad they usually crumble at the 3-4 spot.

Nothing about that has any relevance to them looking convincing at this major, because they haven't. They could've withheld tactics against Liquid and still won. If Liquid were even close to as good as they've been at other tournaments this year this match would've been far more interresting and I would've agreed with you completely. As it stands Astralis need to crush NRG tomorrow and win the major convincingly for me to feel better about their performance.

Im just saying that astralis would win 10/10 against liquid with equal prep :) They were exactly as good as in other tournaments :) a major is just something else - every team meet up with their a-game after 4 - 5 weeks prep. And when that happens liquid is a top 8-15 team apparently :)

At this level it’s hard to judge whether the other team is playing bad or just being outplayed. I agree that liquid doesn’t look like what they did earlier but don’t forget what level astralis can be on a good day. The remainder of matches will determine whether Astralis is back in form or not as you stated

Astralis aren't, by any means, a bad team. I'm not taking anything away from them here. Liquid aren't either, as we all know. But it's hard to say this Liquid team was even close to convincing so far. Astralis at least had some solid wins, but their path has been against some rather unconvincing opposition (Dreameaters, G2, CR4ZY). Like, Astralis could show up like the team we all expect, and I'd be totally happy with that. That said, I kind of want to see NRG finally place past 3-4 at a big event. Liquid need to realize they aren't invincible, they looked so sloppy it's absurd, but at least in the past they could fall back on their aim.

All Liquid got is aim power. No play or anything that Astralis did to them.

Liquid still is a great team, they would habe beaten everybody except astralis ofc. Astralis is a machine that, just runs you over when you blink once in this match, with their tactics, mid round calls, aim and fucking teamplay. They had a slump. But I feel like they can get back to their peak level. This is obviously a huge confidence boost. Only nrg is now in their way for an ez final

It was exactly this only configuration, to lose with Astralis in a Major, which’ve destroyed Liquid’s chance to be considered a team with an era. If Liquid would’ve lost to anyone else and then continued their run in another tournaments they could’ve been still in talks for an era. But they’ve absolutely fucked up and now they are again on the starting line. Wp Astralis.

I consider era to be similar to Bonjwa status (liquipedia.net/starcraft/Bonjwa) in SC:BW. It’s not defined, it’s all about the consensus of a community, who’s considered to not be “only” dominant and the best in the world for some interval of time, but who’s way above any competition in the game. (Flash embodies this principle the best of them all.) And why I look at it this way? Because the only debatable aspect of Liquid’s run, the only asterisk to Liquid’s era was, are they the best because of Astralis just are not really trying? Which shouldn’t be Liquid’s problem, they cannot make others to play, but in the end, if I get back to the SC:BW Bonjwa parallel, Liquid’s seems like Jaedong to Flash, although he was absolutely one of the best players ever, he isn’t considered a Bonjwa, just because he played in the era of Flash. Liquid, to have an era, have to continue their run in dominant fashion, defeat Astralis on every occasion and win a Major. But it’s only me and my metrics and my subjective context.

Astralis looked much better from start to finish. I only got to see overpass but Liquid continued the form they had from group stage. The kinds of shots Astralis were hitting were just nasty and Liquid was having a tough time keeping up even when they were up 9 - 6 it was obvious they werent going to win.
