Qi Banja Luka prize money slashed to $35,000 as teams withdraw from tournament

Qi League, the organiser of Qi Banja Luka, has announced that it was forced to reduce the prize money to $35,000 after several teams suddenly opted to skip the event.

The news means that a total of $115,000 will be cut from the prize pool of the tournament, which will have four teams rather than eight and will be trimmed down from three days to just two (December 14-15).

The decision was made after "a couple of the top 30 teams" that had already committed to attending the tournament "chose to accept invitations from another event scheduled around the same time", Qi League said in a statement.

Qi Banja Luka will have just four teams and a $35,000 prize pool

Qi League, which hosted last year in Belgrade the $75,000 Qi Invitational, did not wish to name the teams who had experienced a change of heart or the event that they had decided to attend instead. But looking at the calendar, cs_summit 5 and DreamHack Open Sevilla are the events that will take place around the same time as Qi Banja Luka and still had slots to fill until recently.

"We reached out to the teams for an explanation but received little information other than that they were backing out," Qi League explained. "This affects the entire event and is very unfair to the partners with whom we work and signed contracts when we had these teams that, to the best of our knowledge, were confirmed for the event.

"This basically meant that we were breaching some of our settled agreements and hence why we are unable to commit to the prize pool we originally set out to offer. We do not want to be a company that promises big prize pools and never pays them out.

"We don’t want the event to not take place at all, so we have come to a more acceptable solution for us, one that we can deliver."

ARCY, the winner of the European qualifier, will be joined by the invited trio of pro100 (who replace AUGUST as the Asian qualifier champion was ruled out due to visa issues), ex-BLUEJAYS and Sharks in Banja Luka to compete in a double-elimination, best-of-three bracket. The winner will earn $30,000, while the runner-up will walk away with a $5,000 cheque.

The final team list for the Bosnian event is the following:

Very sad!!!

Lol did u even read the article or did u instead wanna finish ur burger ? The org signed contracts with particular sponsors and promised that some teams will attend the tourny (known teams means more vierweship and more exposure to the sponsors) so these teams decided to skip meaning the sponsors wont give away money when the tournament probably wont surpass 10k viewers . Imo they did the right choice announcing the news rather then being a gaming paradise v2 Atleast they are clear and honest

wdym? this is the only move to make... if you tell sponsors that are paying ur prize money u have top teams, and then the top teams randomly back out... for the remaining teams u can either scam them of 100k or do this,

You, as a tournament organizer, promise a prize pool. Teams make their own schedules based on that. What if some team had skipped another 100k event to attend this one? Also, going through qualifiers towards that "150k event" you're gonna feel robbed already.

teams skipped their event to attend other ones. you, as a tournament organizer make promises to sponsors. when teams back out unexpectedly, and you cant fill your end of the deal with sponsors they wont pay u ur prize money so looking at it from the participating teams view, you can either have 35k cause the other teams are dickheads or play for 150k and actually only get 35k

I see where you're coming from, but it really is just tough titties for the organizer, and bad business. When a business doesn't make the profit it expected to make, it can't just say "sry no money even tho we promised" and pass the blame.

They tried to keep this events around. If they paid out that huge prize pool for just 4 tier 2 teams with little to no viewers, well they do fulfill their promise but they will hardly make events anymore due to that huge debt.

I'd sue the teams...you can't sign contracts and then say no.

Wouldn't think it's so hard to get 4 top 30 teams to an event

how can teams do this? no penalty for withdrawing from tournament only few weeks before attending? I accept visa issues, but this is betrayal imo

Disgusting behaviour from some teams, this had a great prize pool and a high level event coming into Bosnia is great for their scene. I truly hope that after this and when they put their next big event on that they ensure the teams who dropped last minute do not get a second chance. I am working the event as desk host and the treatment so far has been great, looking forward to seeing what the teams who are attending can do, especially with Neo standing in for ARCY.
