IEM Katowice first match-ups revealed

ESL have revealed the first match-ups that will be played at this year's IEM Katowice.

IEM Katowice is slated to get underway in two weeks, running from February 24 to March 1, when 16 teams will descend upon the eponymous Polish city to fight for the lion's share of a $500,000 prize pool and to earn the title of first-ever ESL Pro Tour Masters Championship winners.

Astralis will play one of the first two opening matches

The 16 teams have been divided into two eight-team groups that will play a best-of-three double-elimination bracket that will see the winners go to the semi-finals and the second and third-placed teams from each group go to the quarter-finals as the high and low seeds, respectively.

Group A

Group B

Group A will be headlined by the best team in the world, Astralis, who will want to bounce back after back-to-back best-of-three losses to Complexity and Natus Vincere during group play at BLAST Premier Spring Series. The group will feature the aforementioned CIS team as well as a FaZe, who kicked off 2020 with three clean 2-0 victories over Ninjas in Pyjamas and Liquid, the later losing twice, in their group stage at the RFRSH event in London.

Group B, on the other hand, will have three top 5 teams in Liquid, MOUZ and Evil Geniuses, backed by a strong pack comprised of 100 Thieves, G2, MAD Lions and a struggling Virtus.pro that will be trying to sneak their way into the playoffs.

I’d say you’d be hard pressed to call vitality, OG, complexity, and godsent better than liquid. The only better team they beat was Astralis, which got rekt by Complexity. And when you have two top 5 players, having little prep doesn’t matter as much, plus it’s not like they changed three players.

I think that the change they did with awp is gonna work. Olof is great lurking or giving an extra for the team while broky is amazing with the awp, specially on ct side with a device playstyle. Faze and navi are looking great this year, so let'see if they can be a real contender for astralis.

Broky didn’t join faze until the end of the year with coldzera, they swapped niko back to igl and moved Olof to awp with rain taking a more supportive role. Everything about faze changed and is continuing to change. 2019 was basically a bust for faze, never had a solid roster or motivated players. No one is taking away from S1mple or electronic, but for this guy to call rain and Broky bots is ignorant.

Some reasons why you should be excited as much as I am: -Looking purely at current form they are the 2 best teams in the world (Astralis and Liquid shit the bed, Fnatic haven't played in a while and a question mark, same goes for EG, Mousesports only true contender) -Both teams have elite squads, insanely skilled players and most importantly rely both on firepower, which always makes for great cs.

Don't think so, Natus Vincere was in bad form in the BO5 against Mouz. If Perfecto get's the kill with the MP9 on B Site Dust 2 NaVi would have won the map, so it goes to Mirage and at that point everything is possible. If it was that close last time I don't think mouz have good chances to beat NaVi in current form.
