Four teams through to Americas Minor

FURIA, Bad News Bears, Cloud9, and Gen.G are the first four teams to qualify for the Americas Minor through the North American closed qualifier after prevailing in the upper bracket semi-finals.

FURIA were the first of the quartet to secure their spot at the offline stage in Rio de Janeiro, fighting back from a 4-11 deficit on Overpass in their opening match against Triumph to edge out a victory in thirty rounds. Andrei "arT" Piovezan's troops faced little contention from there as they won Inferno 16-11 to sweep their first series, and left little room for Envy to fight back in the upper bracket semi-finals as they took a two-map victory over Dallas-based squad to remain undefeated.

Peter "ptr" Gurney's Bad News Bears also found themselves fighting back from an early deficit as they dropped their opening map against Rugratz, but the roster was quick to stabilize as they reverse-swept the series with a win on Inferno and a 15-0 defensive half on Nuke. Ze Pug Godz, who had upset eUnited with comeback in their initial three-map affair, found themselves unable to repeat the effort in their second match, with Bad News Bears taking a 2-0 victory to earn a spot at the Americas Minor.

FURIA are the third Brazilian team to qualify for the Americas Minor

Cloud9 were not far behind as they swept past LiViD in their opening match, pitting them against a Mythic roster who had cast a Joshua "steel" Nissan-less Chaos down to the lower bracket. Although the stream team remained neck-and-neck with Cloud9 on their pick of Vertigo, Johnny "JT" Theodosiou's squad prevailed 16-14 before coming out on top on Inferno to take the series.

In the final match of the first day, the recently-crowned DreamHack Open Anaheim champions of Gen.G were a cut above their opponents as they had no difficulty in dispatching of Divine, and swiftly secured their spot in Rio de Janeiro with a pair of 16-7 wins against their upcoming FLASHPOINT 1 competitors from Orgless.

The team list for the ESL One Rio Americas Minor now looks as follows:

No teams have been eliminated from the closed qualifier yet, with matches in the lower bracket set to play out on Sunday and Monday as the twelve remaining rosters look to secure the final two spots at the Americas Minor.

It's crazy to see how they've grown as a team from playing in the Leipzig qualifiers until now and how effectively they've integrated S0m and BnTeT into the core. I have no doubt in my mind they could take on any team in the top 20 right now, but the top 10 I think is still a bit away. Maybe when BnTeT's English is up to par and communication is optimal they could be dark horses for big titles.

Its funny, I'd think that way if the core guys were inexperienced and were just relying on raw skills. BnTeT has a lot of recent experience playing against top 10 talent. Remember, he carried Tyloo to win bo3's against Faze, Renegades (when they were good), Mouz and G2. Ex-major winner Auti is also someone with good experience against top 10. If BnTeT could beat those teams with Tyloo, he definitely has a better chance with Gen.G.

It's not their experience that really makes me doubt that they could beat the top 10, it's their teamplay and cohesion as a unit. Teams like Mouz FaZe(to an extent) Astralis Liquid etc are all going to be using utility and be able to play off eachother thrice as well as any team they've played so far. They definitely have the experience to play these teams, I'm just not sure if their utility usage and ability to coordinate is on the top 10 level yet.

True, but team cohesion is just a matter of playing with each other often. Experience in this case means level of game sense that these players already have. It's why they won their first lan tournament together without much difficulty. Utility usage will only get better as well. The moment Gen.G signed BnTeT back in December, I instantly knew these guys would be contenders.
