Five men face corruption charges over alleged match-fixing

Five people have been charged related to a 2019 investigation into suspicious betting activity in a CS:GO league, the Victoria Police has announced.

The investigation was launched in March 2019 following a complaint from a betting agency and led to six arrests being made by the Australian police in August after raids were conducted in the states of Victoria and West Australia.

A 27-year-old man from Sale has been charged with five counts of using corrupt conduct information for betting purposes. Three 20-year-old men, two from Mill Park and one from South Morang, have been charged with three counts of using corrupt conduct information for betting purposes.

A 20-year-old man from Mill Park faces two charges of engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of an event or event contingency, and two charges of using corrupt conduct information for betting purposes.

The five men, who face up to 10 years in jail, will appear in court on September 15.

According to ABC, Australian police believe that the bets in fixed matches in ESEA MDL led to winnings of up to AUD30,000 ($19,260).

10 years might seem harsh but in cases of fraud the only real way to combat it is to make the criminals have to weigh the possible earnings against the punishment. There isnt really any rehabiliation or proactive things the society can do against people that want to make money. Im also sure that 10 year is the worst punishment they can get and they are likely looking at much less jail time.
