ESL announce IEM Global Challenge qualification process
Half of the slots for the eight-team LAN tournament planned for December are reserved for the winners of upcoming events hosted by ESL and DreamHack.
The slot allocation for IEM Global Challenge, the $500,000 tournament ESL hope to return to LAN action with on December 15-20, has been announced by the tournament organizer.
The initial four spots will be booked by teams that win the upcoming online events: IEM New York (NA winner), DreamHack Open Fall (EU winner), and IEM Beijing (both EU & NA winners). The remaining spots will be filled via the ESL World Ranking, with the best from North America, CIS, and the two best from Europe being invited to the tournament on November 23.

The ranking invites won't be handed out to teams that won qualifying tournaments, instead, they will be passed on to the next team in line according to the ranking. If one team wins two qualifying events, the additional spot will be distributed according to the regional ranking as well.
IEM Global Challenge qualification process:
October 6-25: IEM New York (NA)
October 15-25: DreamHack Open Fall (EU)
November 6-22: IEM Beijing (EU & NA)
November 23: ESL World Ranking invites
With the announced allocation, a total of four European, three North American, and one CIS team will be competing at IEM Global Challenge, which will play out using a four-team BO3 GSL group stage followed by a single-elimination playoff bracket and a BO5 grand final.
The prize money distribution has also been announced:
1. $200,000
2. $100,000
3-4. $50,000
5-6. $30,000
7-8. $20,000
That is all subject to change, though, "pending on end-of-year COVID-19 developments", as is noted on the tournament website. If the event does in fact take place, it could be the first international LAN since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and IEM Katowice, which culminated in front of an empty arena on March 1.
