FaZe breeze past Liquid in defacto debut with Twistzz at BLAST Premier

The European squad gave Liquid a 16-1 thrashing on the North American team's pick, Nuke.

FaZe have triumphed in their opening match in BLAST Premier Spring Group C against Liquid, winning a close Dust2 affair before taking down the North American side 16-1 on Nuke in their first serious outing with the newest member, Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken.

Håvard "⁠rain⁠" Nygaard & co. will next face Natus Vincere in the group's upper bracket final for one of the two spots at the Spring Final on offer on Saturday at 16:30 , while Liquid are set to fight for survival against MIBR on the same day at 19:30 .

olofmeister's key plays helped FaZe win the close Dust2 opener

FaZe picked up the opening map, Dust2, after a tug of war that saw the two teams go back and forth in both halves. Expected to be out of the roster in the near future, Olof "⁠olofmeister⁠" Kajbjer played a big role in his team's victory on their pick, as the Swede put up several key triples over the course of the opener and ended up as the highest fragger on the server.

Everyone on the European squad had their moments, however, while on the other side Gabriel "⁠FalleN⁠" Toledo struggled to find impact on the map as Liquid went down 11-16 before heading over to their own map pick, Nuke.

Liquid looked to get off to a better start than on Dust2 on the second map after they won the opening pistol round with an attack towards an empty A bombsite, but what followed was a thrashing, courtesy of a near-flawless defense from FaZe. The European side strung together 14 rounds unanswered as they dominated all areas of the map, winning even some disadvantageous scenarios thanks to well-timed stacks and individual plays, and it was all over just two rounds into the second half at 16-1 on the back of a 1v2 clutch from Marcelo "⁠coldzera⁠" David.

While I don't have actual proof, the way the played felt a lot like Karrigan's playstyle. I have no doubt he basically coached the team for this tournament. He also know Liquid and Fallen quite well and has a good feel for setting up a team really quickly. I sometimes wonder whether he would be better as a coach though.

well a lot of things happened today: 1. Liquid got tilted a bit after D2 (only Grim played that map well, rest was subpar) 2. Fallen being inexperienced on Nuke when they conceived 6-7 rounds in a row, He lost his position and seems lost on strats when Liquid is down in score & mentality. 3. Naf & Elige is not on form today. They did hit some shots here and there but still much worst perfomance compare to blast finals. 4. Stewie went full bot in 2 maps. I really think there's something wrong with his mentality since hes still doing IGL. Liquid needs to put Fallen on full IGL & free Stewie from that role. Only until then maybe he will start hitting shots again. 5. Liquid underestimated Faze today for sure. None of them expected twistzz can revamp the team that much compare to their last performance vs. MIBR. Overall just a bad day for Liquid, expect them to do better tomorrow vs. MIBR

Yea I think you are pretty spot on. Liquid gotta change the igl to Fallen asap just to see if Stew can hold up his own performance. I think we are all tired of him playing bad but using the excuse that hes the igl so its not super serious. Lets see what hes made out of individually. I honestly hope he succeeds but I dont think it will happen unfortunately. I also hated the pick of Nuke. Just cause you played real well against Navi twice on that map with Fallen, you suddenly cant expect a guy that has very little experience to be consistent...and hes not even the igl so you're putting more pressure on him playing well. He looked real poor but tbh I don't even know what maps Liquid are actually good. Nonetheless, wp Faze, future looks exciting and I want to see how Navi handles them. Also think Mibr have a real good chance of beating Liquid tomorrow

I don't feel like Stewie went full bot on D2. The stats show this, and if my memory serves me correctly, he was a big reason they got some of those early rounds. Him and Grim played solidly on that map and did their part. If either Elige, Naf or Fallen would've done their job on that map (Fallen had 0 impact with the awp, part of the reason why he even was on the team was to have a primary awp'er), they would've had a good shot at winning that map, but now it was just meh. I'm also not convinced about their one tournament showing at Blast Finals. It was great and nice to see, but to me, Fallen doesn't help with their mentality problem, which showed on Nuke.

Yea I'll actually take back what I said...stew was one of their better performers today just Naf and Elige were off, especially Elige, he's been looking very average lately. I know its easy to say this now after a bad loss, but if Fallen isn't the igl, then I don't know why they just didn't grab another awper who can have more of an impact like Junior. I think Liquid really need to force the igl on Fallen and put pressure on the guys to perform. Give them some time of course, it won't happen instantly, but they need to find out if this stew and fallen combo can work cause I don't think it can. But honestly the most disappointing part about the result today was the fact that they got so triggered after losing dust 2 (don't know if they thought they would easily win) that it clearly effected them on Nuke. I don't understand how a top team can be so fragile and I really don't know where the motivation is supposed to come from.

Three notes: 1. liquid played poorly today, not only fallen. It’s not fair to blame only him, this was a team failure. 2. That's a huge surprise from FaZe, I still don't think they are going to go out of groups, but that's actually a big surprise. Liquid still has some problems that they need to fix with FalleN, it's not looking as good as it should, they should win this game, they were big favourites.
