Cloud9 to put CS:GO division on hold

The players have been moved to the bench and made available for transfer after a series of disappointing results.

Cloud9 will bench their Counter-Strike squad after six months of middling results and will take a break from competing in Valve’s flagship shooter, Jack Etienne, the organisation's CEO, told Rush B Media and The Esports Observer.

Mr. Etienne cited performance struggles and the financial impact of the team's long-term stay in Europe due to the coronavirus pandemic as the reasons to put the project on hold, placing the entire roster on the transfer list and parting ways with head coach Chris "⁠Elmapuddy⁠" Tebbit. According to Mr. Etienne, Cloud9 intend to return to Counter-Strike in the future, possibly with a North American team.

Cloud9 will no longer field their current CS:GO roster

"COVID has prevented us from assembling the team in North America as we had originally planned," Cloud9 said in a statement. "Though everyone has worked hard to rise to the challenge, the reality is that remote training isn't conducive for building an organisation in the way Cloud9 usually does."

Cloud9 invested heavily in their CS:GO squad in September, dubbed ‘The Colossus’ by General Manager Henry "⁠HenryG⁠" Greer. The roster was initially built around in-game leader Alex "⁠ALEX⁠" McMeekin and coach Aleksandar "⁠kassad⁠" Trifunović, although the Serbian skipper left the project in late 2020, not long after its creation.

After the turn of the year, Özgür "⁠woxic⁠" Eker was moved to the bench and replaced by up-and-comer Erick "⁠Xeppaa⁠" Bach, with ALEX and then Patrick "⁠es3tag⁠" Hansen taking up AWPing duties.

Cloud9's European-majority team, currently 25th in the world, peaked at No.19 in the team ranking, and had been plateauing around that position since their initial climb in October/November, unable to break past quarter-final finishes at events like cs_summit 7 and DreamHack Masters Winter 2020 Europe, with weaker showings at Flashpoint 2, the IEM Katowice Play-In, where they missed out on a spot at the main event, and ESL Pro League Season 13, which they just finished in 17-20th place.

I don't really feel too bad for him. He invested way too heavily and payed inflated salaries to mediocre players. He could've bought CHAOS which already had a proven core, or even made minor changes to the current Extra Salt for a fraction of the price. Instead he chose to hype up a project of unproven players with no chemistry or roles and called it the collosus.

Why you feel bad? You could see it was a failure project since the start. HernyG just played with others money and C9 just know opened their eyes. You can't just live and think he did a small mistake but Cloud9 as company & investors lost A LOT of money cause of him. it definitely was a very costly gamble and the org clearly paid a price but I give props for them trying. The worst org is the one that does okay here and there but never *goes* for it because they're content to just make a bit of money while being mediocre. C9 showed that they were passionate about winning and that's an org I can get behind, even it all falls apart.

Not even surprised, was bound to happen. Everyone with half a brain knew what a fucking awful roster this was since its inception. I can understand and neglect why HenryG hyped the lineup but it wasnt a Tier 1 competitive roster to begin with. ALEX got exposed for being a rider of Zywoo`s brilliance , Esetag without Astralis` system wasnt that impressive and they never had a good awp player. Only silver lining being Floppy and Xeppa got a stint in EU and were able to showcase their skills in some games. Wasn't even Alex riding ZywOo, but just taking systems/chemistry already in place and prepetuating them. Vitality, until recently, maintained about the same level without him, which is a pretty clear sign he wasn't that important. Also this blew up in Henry's face, given his whole contract transparency bullshit. I understood his reasoning, but it made him look silly, which is why you should never try to put yourself in positions to look bad.

I think it's one of those things that you hold onto. Instead of announcing it at the outset, maybe after their success had started. This team was designed to fail since first few signups to be honest. We can say it was huge gamble which didn't work out, but honestly it was more of a madness. I am more interested what will happen now. Will at least xepaaa and alex stay? Where will other players go? Meziii to Endpoint or Gamerlegion or similar team? Floppy can join some NA org easily and do fine there? Es3tag, i don't know man. Maybe keep him? But he is not T1 star and never will be. Decent spot3 at best. Lesson learned: Don't overpay players who are half a year on bench or have two good tournaments for no.1 team in the world while not achieving much else in T1 CSGO. //edit ok i read whole thing, they release everyone, that is sad. It is quite easy to build BETTER team for half amount of money they spend on this roster.

A sad day for the health of the CS scene for sure In comparison to two other recently formed T1 contenders CoL and OG, this team did not secure the calibre of player next to CoL while paying top dollar and weren't as careful as OG, who I'm convinced is a value-savvy org Players get out of this looking great for the most part, Xeppa and floppy especially were proven upcomers, and some blame lies with ALEX's leadership. Operations value is understandable and I can't blame Jack, who decided to invest in CS in the first place but in the end the team wasn't delivering HenryG does look a bit foolish though, forming the roster on the back of such high promises

This was a botched project to begin with and everyone was in over their heads. Instead of talking big on social media and spending money left and right, they could have had a better roster by piecing together a real team instead of rushing and hyping it all up for nothing. Cloud9 actually were playing some sick games recently but couldn't do it consistently. They would smash people one minute and then lose an easy game the next. Shame as the teamplay looked on point recently after settling after woxic. But just not enough results to show for it, and not enough time when the pressure is on to prove All the players had some sick moments, if you've watched their games you wouldn't fault any individual, even Alex. I guess Thorin was wrong on this one. He often claims that teams are run by incompetent people who are just "lucky" to keep their noses above the water and wanted to see casters, analysts become coaches, managers, GMs. Well, here is a prime example of person with deep connections in the scene and understanding (or is it "understanding"?) how the game is played. Yet he wasn't able to secure good talent and had the first (and probably most important) member in coach to leave just after a month or so. Perhaps GM position requires more than just being a CS:GO persona? It didn't end well for YNK and it's probably not ending well for moses too. After all, maybe the talent should keep doing what they know how to do?

where do i start.. CS is a game of personalities, you dont create a team by paying some1 2 million and the rest 500k. This isnt champions league and it just doesnt work well in CS. 1) Peer pressure due to high expectations with a shitty team, 2) HenryG is a caster and has never played CSGO at a high level, their coach has never played CSGO at a high level either..... You cant throw money at something and make it work, 9 times out of 10 it WONT work. If you have been a part of a team you'd know how hard its to find players that understand the playstyle, share the same mentality and that arent complicated to play with? thats incredibly hard to do. It takes YEARS thats why the best teams "GET THERE" with work and time, they dont get "brought there", "there" being top rankings and first places.

Why'd they be back? Game is dying in NA and they were only perma made fun off losing money as you do in this game if you do not succeed, it is better to focus in other games that are actually profitable for them and that's what they will do. CS:GO is only going down from this point, imagine how much they used for this project only to stop it so quickly, its clear as day this org won't be back any time soon if ever. They had to pull the plug tbh. This project was a trainwreck since day 1 and most likely the worst roster ever financiallywise... Paying superstar money for bums and subpar tier 1 players. Henry G should be renamed Henry Joke, how could you believe this bum lineup would do anything ?

in this age of on-line CS, i don't see why anyone needs to spend a lot of $$ on a team. just get a house ($2k mo) on a 200 Mbps + fiber ($2k+ mo.) and let the players (who should be thrilled to be paid to play period) carve out their place. IMO cloud 9 got caught up in the hype - which is easy when there is too much $$$ sloshing about (that never lasts btw).

Cloud9 american trash organisation. Trying to regain upper positions first with overpriced B-Tier players climbing the ladder, then buying in good players, never played together but they have to be successfully against stabilized A-Tier teams. That will never be the way how it works. It is no Soccer-team where u just buy good players. In CS you need a Team and that needs time.

mezii, floppy and xeppaa are not good enough for reaching the top level. Didn't understand why they bench woxic. Even if the team cannot win a Major or an S-tier tournament like DH Master, they can still perform if they focus on bringing better players for ALEX and Es3tag. Their only mistake was to bring "rookies" in this line-up.
