Akuma's Sergiz on beating NAVI: "The emotions are unreal"

Find out more about the surprise package of the CIS RMR tournament.

Serghij "Sergiz" Atamanchuk is still trying to wrap his head around what happened on Monday. His team, Akuma, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of this leg of the Regional Major Ranking (RMR) circuit thus far as they sent current world No. 2 Natus Vincere to the lower bracket of EPIC League CIS after a one-sided affair.

Akuma will face Virtus.pro later today after stunning NAVI

The young Ukrainian side, ranked just eighth in the region, made light work of their opponents on Mirage, where they limited Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev to his worst performance since joining NAVI in 2016. The DreamHack Masters Spring champions gathered themselves and provided strong resistance in the second map, Dust2, but Akuma still managed to prevail thanks to a resolute defensive performance.

"The emotions are unreal," Sergiz told HLTV.org. "You watch a team play at every event and here you are, beating them. You cannot describe it.

"We didn't expect to be able to win Mirage by such a scoreline. For some reason, NAVI weren't fully focused or something, and they were losing important duels. Perhaps they underestimated us.

"As for us, we wanted to prove to ourselves that we could stand up to such a serious opponent because we were playing well in practice against tier-one teams and we wanted to see if we could do the same in official matches."

The name Akuma may not resonate loudly outside of the CIS region, but the core of the team has been together for over a year now, joining CR4ZY in early 2020 alongside veteran coach Ivan "Johnta" Shevtsov.

With star player Dmytro "SENSEi" Shvorak putting up consistent numbers, CR4ZY quickly broke into the top 50 in the world rankings. But their progress would be halted after the summer break, and in November, the players found themselves without any financial support after the CR4ZY organisation parted ways with its esports teams due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We continued working with the same roster alongside Johnta, but after a little while, ANGE1 offered him the opportunity to try himself out in Valorant with one of the best teams in the world," Sergiz said.

"He helped us find financial help in the form of Ukrainian investors, but things ended up not working out with them."

The team spent the next months playing as Project X, which had been their name prior to joining CR4ZY. This time around, however, they faced roadblocks at every turn and results remained inconsistent, leading to a division in the squad in March. Sergiz, SENSEi and Alexandr "Psycho" Zlobin stuck together and eventually brought back a former teammate in Sergiy "DemQQ" Demchenko. The roster was rounded out by Yevhen "j3kie" Serhachov, who had been playing alongside DemQQ since the start of the year.

"The Project X lineup met its expiry date because there were lots of issues, both inside and outside of the game," Sergiz said. "I think this team has managed to reach this level because we assembled great individual players who complement one another."

SENSEi is leading the EPIC League's rating charts (1.44)

Playing as WaitForTag, the team made it through the open qualifiers for EPIC League CIS in their first attempt and then topped their closed qualifier group in convincing fashion. Ahead of the RMR tournament, the roster rebranded to Akuma — a name that seemed more appropriate for an event of this stature, featuring the best teams in the region.

After surviving the Swiss stage with a 3-1 record — only losing against Gambit — and moving past NAVI in the opening round of the playoffs, Akuma face another tough task later today against world No.7 Virtus.pro. The bar is now set high for the Ukrainian team, but the players don't seem too worried about the recent attention that they're receiving. "We just want to play our game and see what happens," Sergiz said.

Interest in Akuma has been piqued by the recent upset of NAVI, according to Sergiz, who says, however, that the team is still open to offers (the squad's manager, Kirill Slyunin, can be reached on Twitter). After months of struggle and frustration, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel for this promising team, who seem destined to follow in EPG Family's footsteps. "Every day, someone new is expressing an interest or asking about us," Sergiz said. "Before long, we will announce our new home to the world."

Huge step forward for Akuma. I'm sure they gonna beat VP, but then I don't see them winning either Spirit or Gambit honestly, just simply too early for them to be that good. 4-6 months and they will be on the same level with Gambit, NAVI and Spirit but still if they beat VP then it's top 3, which is really good result for them.

They have enough gas to beat VP but after I see them losing. Also they have enough talent to be on the same level with Gambit Spirit, they just need to keep grinding. I mean why they can't reach the same success that other CIS teams did recently? Are those cis teams special or what? The ones who work hard - gets rewarded, so why can't akuma replicate this success?

It was hard for other cis teams to replicate navi success, but look at them now Gambit, Spirit, VP, Entropiq, they have made a huge step forward, they were grinding a lot and here they are. And nothing stops other CIS teams making this "step forward" too. Sure , I can be wrong and Akuma will disband in few months, but at this point I see them evolving into something bigger.

That is the most likely scenario, yes. I've been following this roster since they got signed by Cr4zy, and while there are some glimpses of greatness here and there, aside from Sensei, they're inconsistent AF. So I wouldn't read too much into their defeat of navi. VP is still #7 in the world, with a history of top placements in big events, and Akuma is still very much an underdog here. They might win, but I'd say it's 70/30 for VP.

Not quite, I still remember the Na Vi guys coming in out of nowhere and beating the Koreans, MYM, then beating the cyx-mousesports (major winners), and after clapping NA-pride EG and finishing it off with trashing SK (arguably the best team in the world). Now these a**holes got lucky they avoided mTw and the Polish guys but still way off from this. Is Akuma go on to clap teams like G2, Gambit, Heroic, BIG, and Team Liquid then we can talk~

Well 1. No such thing as a 2009 "na vi" They first played with each other (zeus, Edward, starix, markeloff, and ceh9), and the first event had no good teams (they had the Koreans and ForZe, and in the event they didn't play WeMade fox and ForZe was pretty average), and that event took place early in 2010.

I've seen this cheat before. Not surprising. How is it related to cheating and matchfixing on pro-scene? I know saying everyone is legit is naive, but wouldn't people, who have been doing this for years, know better. Coach Bug already proved you can get caught

Who is delusional now that 16 teams accused Akuma of cheating? You should try to be more open minded in your day to day life.

15* I probably should, but i've know these players and I thought they were legit. Also the guy I called delusional said they had some sort of wh, aim or all other hacks. They didn't, so he was still delusional

Im not gonna say anything as its not me pointing that out, but Someone posted that somewhere showing that the 2nd guy he kills jumps while onside the smoke and the shooter traced him up as he jumps while hidden in smoke as if he could somehow see him, i guess it could be the smoke bug or he felt the jump up somehow, i mean it can sometimes happen, but i just shared it just to share it :)

I've checked this moment on the demo. Psycho was able to see model of electronic when elec stepped back to the smoke. It seems like it's kind of the smoke bug. Actually you can see this bug even in this clip: if you pause right before electronic died then you see visible shape of the player's model. In the demo, Psycho saw that shape while electronic was stepping back and jumping.

It has to be insane feeling for boys such as them to beat a team of NaVi caliber, that they were probably a fan of, and now they beat them, it has to be insane. They are a TOP 20 team in my eyes with how they've been playing here.

We continued working with the same roster alongside Johnta, but after a little while, ANGE1 offered him the opportunity to try himself out in Valorant with one of the best teams in the world
