NIP advance to PGL Major playoffs after ending Copenhagen Flames' dream run

The Swedish team will have the opportunity to play in front of a home crowd after surviving a thrilling three-map affair.

Ninjas in Pyjamas are the final team through to the playoffs of PGL Major Stockholm after beating Copenhagen Flames 2-1 in the final match of the Legends Stage, securing a spot among the top eight and ensuring they will have the opportunity to play in front of a 16,000-strong home crowd in the arena, where they will face G2 in the quarter-finals.

The Cinderella story for Copenhagen Flames comes to an end just short of a playoff berth, a campaign which kicked off in shocking fashion during the Challengers Stage, where they became one of the first two teams to advance to the top sixteen with a flawless 3-0 record. A loss to G2 at the start of the Legends Stage gave way to wins over Evil Geniuses and FaZe, but 1-2 series losses to HEROIC and Ninjas in Pyjamas now bring an end to the team's hopes of making it to the Avicii Arena.

NIP are through to the playoffs of PGL Major Stockholm

Copenhagen Flames kicked off the series on their pick of Nuke, racing to a 3-0 start off the back of multi-kill rounds from Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard and Fredrik "roeJ" Jørgensen. Triple kills from Nicolai "device" Reedtz and Hampus "hampus" Poser in response allowed Ninjas in Pyjamas to answer back, and a cleanup of two ensuing rounds allowed the Swedish team to pull ahead, 4-3. However, that lead did not last long, and it was Copenhagen Flames who emerged on top at the end of the half, narrowly edging ahead by one round heading into the side swap.

A string of three rounds at the start of the second half once again allowed Ninjas in Pyjamas to gain the lead, but for the second time, the Danish team were quick to answer. A star performance from jabbi led a clean CT effort from Copenhagen Flames, who won eight rounds straight to shut Ninjas in Pyjamas out of the remainder of the map.

Copenhagen Flames continued to surpass expectations on Inferno, racing to a 7-1 start on the defense as Ninjas in Pyjamas once again fell flat. It was only toward the end of the half that the Swedes added to their tally, device and hampus being key in keeping their side in the running on the map as they put together four rounds for a 10-5 scoreline at the break.

Ninjas in Pyjamas's fate took a turn for the worse as Copenhagen Flames secured a pistol round victory to further extend their lead, but three Scout kills from hampus turned the tides for the Swedish side. Key kills from Linus "LNZ" Holtäng in banana kicked off a comeback effort for Ninjas in Pyjamas, combining with a strong showing from hampus as they looked like an entirely revitalized team, conceding just two more rounds as they rallied back to tie up the series score with a 16-13 map win.

Ancient began with more of a back-and-forth between the two teams, an early set of rounds from Ninjas in Pyjamas faltering to an aggressive stance in middle from jabbi. Two key eco rounds were what turned the tides for Ninjas in Pyjamas, with LNZ grabbing multi-kills in both and winning a 1vs2 clutch to swing momentum in his team's favor, which they converted into a 9-6 lead.

Ninjas in Pyjamas remained in the driver's seat following the break, grabbing three rounds off the bat and moving up to a 14-8 scoreline not long after. However, a swift victory was not to be, and Copenhagen Flames valiantly fought back, sustaining despite Ninjas in Pyjamas attaining match point thanks to stellar retakes from the duo of jabbi and Rasmus "Zyphon" Nordfoss, managing to make it to overtime. There, the Danish team took an early lead, but crucial multi-kill rounds from LNZ and hampus were what helped Ninjas in Pyjamas take things over the line, edging out a 19-17 victory.

f0rest left a few months after gtr was removed, which was understandable because he had become a father or was about to be one and the team had become youth dominant apart from lekr0, but if he had stayed something great could have happened for nip. Very smart player and always calm.

They've played shit the entire week lol. They're lucky it's a triple elimination. Even then CPF lack of experience cost them on inferno with that big lead and then on ancient they lost 3 anti-ecos. Feels like the better team actually lost in this case.

Amazingly intense match! Gg wp to both teams. So much pressure, and some fumbles at key moments and incredible clutches in others. Jabbi, LNZ, hampus, device with that has wallbang on ancient.. just wow Really happy NiP came through as it's their home crowd and they deserve it, even if this specific match wasn't convincing. CPH Flames are already heroes for their dream run, and should leave the tournament proud, it could easily have gone their way. Amazing fighting spirit and maturity for such a new team. The next gambit maybe?

Felt like a major final with how hooked I was on this game. Very sad to see cph flames come so close yet so far, but I think the fact that they even made it that far in the first place is a real statement, considering they didn't even make top 16 at the iem fall open qualifier 1, which was part of their route to even get to this point.

Nip made to the arena at least. I think getting punched in the face by NaVi (especially by bit) so hard plus the Gambit comeback on Dust2 kind of messed up their mentality, that's probably the reason why they played so shaky afterwards, good to see that they manage to pull through. Hope they use the one day break to adjust well, G2 is a though opponent to deal with.

Proud of NiP and people saying they didn't play well. LOL! NiP played awesome this tournament and was ranked #1 in EU RMR. Best EU team IMO! As for the major they won their 2 first games convincingly vs EU opponents as expected and were handed draws vs the 2 strongest teams in the entire year in NaVi & Gambit. With their major playoff on the line and from 2 defeats like this it's really easy to just break down and crash out of the major when you're clear favourite going up vs a dark horse this major. Just looked at what happened to the old NiP team back in 2016 that crashed out of the major qualifier vs Vega Squadron in a complete collapse. NiP played great and CPH is a really strong team as they have shown this major

NiP have played over their level for months and with incredible luck. Even when they are in deep ****, someone either gets lucky or makes a hero play to bait them out of it. That can't go on for forever, and when their luck drops, they will drop out of top 10 instantly. In reality they are a trash team and it's a shame that they made it to the arena, because they didn't deserve it at all. Massive respect to CPH Flames. What an incredible performance. They got so close. With a bit more experience, they can do very well. In some situations the lack of experience just showed, but that's understandable. Sad that they didn't make it to the arena, but mad props to them!
