device looking to return to Astralis - Report

The AWPer is reconsidering his move to the Swedish team less than a year after the blockbuster transfer.

Nicolai "⁠device⁠" Reedtz is looking to leave Ninjas in Pyjamas and go back to Astralis according to a joint report by 1pv.fr and Dexerto. The outlets have stated that multiple sources have told them that the Dane is looking to find a way out of his three-year deal after moving back from Stockholm to Copenhagen in the second half of 2021.

While the return of the 26-year-old star with 19 MVP awards to his name would work perfectly for Astralis — who have been struggling to figure out a solution for the AWPing situation since device's departure in April —, the long contract presents a significant barrier for a potential transfer back to the organization he won four Majors with.

The Swedish experiment hasn't been working out for device

device's transfer to Ninjas in Pyjamas, when he was on the last year of his contract, was speculated to have cost the Swedish organization between $700,000 and $1,000,000. How much Ninjas in Pyjamas would ask to return him back home, when he has over two years left on his contract, isn't clear at this moment.

Distress in the relationship between Ninjas in Pyjamas and device was noticeable at the final tournaments of 2021, as the Dane looked crushed after elimination by Liquid at the BLAST Premier Fall Finals, an underwhelming result that followed a 5-8th placing at the PGL Stockholm Major on home soil.

The final European RMR tournament of the year, IEM Fall, was device's standout event as he recorded a 1.35 rating and secured the MVP medal, but that result turned out to be just a flash in the pan. The Swedish team struggled to challenge for titles in 2021 and have fielded two different academy players since device's arrival: Erik "⁠ztr⁠" Gustafsson and Linus "⁠LNZ⁠" Holtäng.

The arrival of Patrick "⁠es3tag⁠" Hansen, who introduced communication issues to the mix, and the departure of head coach Björn "⁠THREAT⁠" Pers surely didn't help Ninjas in Pyjamas's case. In the end device missed out on Ninjas in Pyjamas's final games of the year after reportedly being sidelined due to medical issues.

I dont think that. We went the most he could. He finished in 5-8 place. NIP is not one of the 4 best teams in the world. I root for them agaist G2, but they were not better than G2. He was carry and top fraggeand very very rarely underperformed hence nickname mr consistent.but they (astralis) managed to give alot of space for device to be pro active around map while on nip he had mote pressyre to be playmaker and be much more hyper agressive. On astralis he used to get all space like rn gambit makes fot sh1ro to frag.

If they are giving him all the space he wants etc. it means they are picking up the slack elsewhere i.e. he may be top fragger but he isn't carrying them. Obviously the start AWPer is a big part of their success but it's not a hard carry scenario like old Na'Vi or something. So when he goes to NiP and the team is much weaker around him, he's not able to solo carry the team to success every game.

I doubt that very much. NiP doesn't have strong cards on their hand in this negotiation. NiP wanted Dev1ce, now he wants out. Astralis wanted to sell him, now he will surely be a good pick. But there's other awpers they must have been negotiating with. Acor, Farlig? Maybe even Stavn? And he didn't get younger since they sold him. So I find it incredibly hard to imagine NiP getting the same amount back as they paid for him. Maybe Dev1ce will pay some of the buyout, but I can't imagine Astralis paying that much.

It was a risk that didn't seem to pay off for Device, which is the problem with risks. I don't think it's Device's fault at all but now the issue is will Astralis even take Device back? Sure enough, he would probably just replace Lucky but with Dupreeh or Magisk, it's hard to imagine what the team would be like.

It's devices fault for signing a 3 year contract. If you have the leverage to not sign one you should never do it (and he had that leverage, its device). If they do take him back i'm sure the astralis lineup will be better than this nip lineup. A team with gla1ve device and blamef can never be really bad

The original Astralis line-up was not the era-defining Astralis we know today, there were cracks and that started to show... So at the time, I don't Device made the wrong call, it was just the most unexpected call. I highly doubt he will play for 3 three for NiP and if Astralis do want Device back, most likely Lucky will be the one to go.

This year's been pretty bad for a lot of newcomers. Lucky, kyojin, lnz, and ztr all got moved from t3 to t1 and didn't play well. I think b1t and maybe drop are the exceptions. But then again for all those teams I couldn't see them having much better results if they had signed experienced players instead. If xyp9x hadn't signed a contract until 2025 I would have kicked him and kept lucky into a better player - he's not an all aim no brainer like kyojin

I agree, it's been all over the place for roster changes and only a select few actually worked and paid dividends. B1T's success was essentially prodigal, it was ZywOo/Gambit Youngsters level of insaneness when it came to adapting to tier 1 so quickly. The only one we didn't see play tier 1 this year was m0NESY, so we shall see how that pans out. If Lucky can play support like Xyp9x, then by all means keep Lucky who is always going to have a better potential skill ceiling than Xyp9x but if Device is to go back to Astralis, I don't know if they will keep Lucky.

He speaks Danish and is learning Swedish. Learning swedish is gonna be much quicker for him than the average person because danish and swedish, like norwegian is similar in vocubulary/grammar. The biggest learning curve is adapting to the pronounciaton, we pronounce a lot of words quite different in Denmark compared to Sweden.

What I was saying is that dev1ce left Astralis because it was a sinking ship, and chose NIP because they could afford him and because bootcamping in Sweden was more convenient for him. They also probably offered him more. Where's the challenge in that? A bigger challenge would have been staying in Astralis and figuring out how to fix their problems. And now when NIP are in the same position they were in when he joined, why does he want to leave? Because bootcamping in Sweden is no longer convenient for him. So basically he was only there for the convenience, not the challenge.

Stacked teams don't always means success either. Sometimes in-game experience is worth more than you know. X9p and glave aren't going to be great for 3 years but I'd bet they have another year or two if dev1ce replaces Lucky. Sometimes it's have faith and confidence in those on your team that you don't have to worry about them as much and can focus on your game.

as i see it other teams are in better spot right now, and are also getting an upgrade, its not like they are just stacking firepower, roles make sense as well for g2/vita/faze navi is good, gambit is improving, so id expect new astralis to battle for 6-9 with heroic,nip and vp Single player change very rarely improves a team from top15 to top5, but it could be that astralis is just chilling now and waited knowing that device will join to go hard again, because lucky is not that terrible and results should be better on paper, they just felt teethless last tournaments right after device became sick

Yea, but also have BlameF and Konfig with them, they are an upgrade in my opinion over dup and mag... Bringing dev1ce back and the confidence that comes with that.. They move to where they belong at the 5 mark. I don't think they are top 3 potential but you'll hang out in 5th for most of the year. Also keeping in mind that BlameF and Konfig are still new to the team and they need a few more months of solid practice together.

LNZ was super promising honestly, and he was apparently good to have around with him hyping the team up etc, good for morale. And Phzy has shown he has huge potential as well. REZ, Hampus, Plopski, LNZ, Phzy could be a good team when they've settled in. Look at Gambit, they came out of nowhere as well, with only Sh1ro being the real superstar in the making at first.

Big blow for NiP, he really took them to a new level and with some stability they could be a top 3 team. Could mean a huge payday tho if they can get him back to Astralis for a bigger sum then they bought him for, a 75-100% increase of the transfer fee would make sense since theres 2 years left on the contract. Not sure who they could buy to replace him with tho and still be on the same level skisswise, probably noone available. They should of gone for dupreeh and Magisk instead of adding e3stag and replaced Plopski (amazing but to unstable and not sure he can reach the potential we thought he had) for: device (still best danish player imo) REZ (prolly best swedish player the coming years) Magisk hampus dupreeh

Bringing in another academy player instead of just picking a strong name like Lekr0, f0rest or HEAP. Also keeping Plopksi who's terrible... Vitality roster is one of the most powerful roster one can make on paper but in reality it will never work out. Communication will be a huge huge problem for the first 6-8 months and by the time they will improve in communication, i don't think they will have the motivation left to perform and win championships.

As i wrote here few weeks ago... I don't know the background, but this is obvious choice for both sides (Lucky is one another not terrible, not good enough youngster in top tier team). If gla1ve can set up roster properly (which should be piece of cake for him), they can be title contenders for sure. I think dev1ce can still do a lot IF he wants to, question is, IF he has motivation. NiP is simply not good enough team for him to stick around. Arguably most interesting prospect is hampus and that is kinda sad. I hope they make this happen AND they play sick games afterwards. Also rivalry with Astrality might be nice cherry on top ;)
