Sources: Complexity in talks to sign Extra Salt trio; add Grim, junior

Should the deal for Copenhagen Flames fall through, the Dallas-based organization have already lined up another roster they could acquire heading into 2022.

Complexity are in talks to acquire the core of Extra Salt, sources familiar with the situation tell HLTV.org. Additionally, the team are looking to add Liquid rifler Michael "⁠Grim⁠" Wince in place of Edgar "⁠MarKE⁠" Maldonado, a move which would reunite the 21-year-old with Paytyn "⁠junior⁠" Johnson, who was reported to be joining the roster by Dust2.us.

Complexity initially emerged as a frontrunner to buy the roster of Copenhagen Flames after the Danish team impressed at PGL Major Stockholm, but talks between the two organizations stalled for a period, leaving the possibility of them reaching a deal in jeopardy — as first reported by Dexerto. The same outlet indicated Complexity have since begun to analyze their other options, including the possibility of building a North American roster.

Grim will look to return to superstar form with a new set of teammates

According to our sources, one of the prime candidates to be acquired by Complexity is the core of Extra Salt, who have been the most promising team to emerge from North America’s tier two scene in the past two years, making a case against international opposition throughout 2021 and recently securing a spot in ESL Pro League Season 15.

Despite the reported impending departure of their star AWPer Josh "⁠oSee⁠" Ohm to Liquid, the team still has a strong foundation, featuring in-game leader Johnny "⁠JT⁠" Theodosiou and two talented riflers in Ricky "⁠floppy⁠" Kemery and Justin "⁠FaNg⁠" Coakley.

Sources familiar with the situation tell HLTV.org that the lineup are also aiming to bolster their firepower with the addition of Grim, who would link up with former Triumph teammate junior as he joins the roster in oSee's place.

While nothing has been finalized, discussions between Complexity and Extra Salt are well underway, with buyouts for the players already agreed upon. The move, should it come to fruition, could offer the North American prospects the chance to consistently compete against tier one opposition, with Complexity being a partner team in both the BLAST and ESL Pro Tour circuits.

I think it's important for a roster to be tightly-bound, like a family, for it to work well in the long run. This is what Navi do, for example. Complexity has been shuffling players around a lot. I think this is not the best strategy to aim for great results.

BnB have a way better track record but yeah PA as a squad is prob at better level now (seeing as Junior is for sure out) You could argue for a mix of both teams to get a better team (I think Ben is trash for example) but at this point it remains to be seen what will happen. i would say Shake is pretty trash too like Ben when it comes to fragging and just like BnB are gonna be without an awper, PA`s main awper is a 30 year old guy who no one really knows how long is gonna be there. Just implying that you cant really get a mix of both teams that would be better than the other. Both squads are good but i think its time PA deserves a long stay in EU , they can actually be quite good if they play against some competition there with consistency . But yea, its all about orgs and whether they are interested or not. roej is a better player than every single one of them, not sure about the rest tho and tbh floppy, junior and grim never really got the chance to show their worth against good opposition, all of them got screwed over massively. Junior got stuck in a team with massive communication issues and never really got integrated into the furia system, the C9 project didn't get enough time to grow as a team and grim went from being the star player to being the guy who had to play all the shit roles in TL.

Promising CPH Flames that's been constantly struggling agaisnt tier 3 teams after the major. Jabbi is really not good, and HooXi is going to turn into a bottom-fragging paycheck stealer very soon, they're not worth the risk. Signing ES trio + junior, Grim is safer, probably cheaper and is an act of supporting the local scene, plus this roster actually looks good and competitive at tier 2 with potential of upseting in tier 1. A brilliant move by Complexity if they sign them imo.

Es is already 22. You're a bit harsh. They will probably be a t2 na team, which the region is lacking. If na has 3 okay team and sa has 2, we almost have an ecosystem. I prefer that than chp who will probably lose one of their players soon (like nicodoz ). Cloud9 was too greedy. The old roster was less costly than the collosus. The hype come more from the better ecosystem, a intra region competition more than team by itself.

Yeah, this is true. He played anchor on Liquid but wasn’t really comfortable. They might switch around roles to give Grim a more star rifler role, which means FaNg likely gets moved to anchor

ES is T2 team (being pretty generous). With the money Complexity has behind, they should aim towards having a T1 capable of being top 5, not to "Maybe do some damage".

Be real, there is not many great free agents rn, the least you can do is to support your own nation and get a roster that can upset and be relevant in the near future. I have no doubts that given the right conditions, this roster could be a top 5 or 10-ish.

Actually looks like a great development team for NA, probably won’t really compete in tier 1, but they could easily be the 3rd best NA team pretty quickly. Hopefully Extra Salt picks up a new team to keep developing T2 NA talent. FaNg and Grim are excellent pickups rn imo.

Not terrible, but problem is firepower. If floppy, Fang and junior fire on all cylinders, they have chance to beat T2 EU teams. If not, they are str8 up fucked barely T3. Role wise it can work quite well tho. I don't believe in Fang, he's supposed to be star (or N.3) guy in this roster and i am not sure about that. Or grim can try to do that, but he should probably stick to what he's used to do. how about: jsk, AZR, jkaem, junior, floppy?

I think the idea behind this is to get back to coL's roots in NA CS. They have an opportunity here, no matter what you or anything else thinks, to make a significant impact on the scene. NA has new talent on the way and coL is in a nice spot to invest in that for the future.

JT is a really strong IGL. People don’t give him enough credit but he brings a ton of structure and was a big reason for this teams success when they were ATK, C9 and obviously ES. Honestly he’s picked it up a bit in the fragging department as well (not a good dragged still but improvement is something).

Grim is a natural star player, but he couldn't fill that role on Liquid, because you have NAF and Elige filling that space. I don't think his tenure on Liquid is a true test of his potential, but imo he did end up becoming a pretty solid anchor near the end. Now that Grim would be the best player on the new coL, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a return to form to when he was on Triumph. Remember Ethan on CLG vs NRG/EG?
