IEM Katowice 2022 Play-inMOUZ, CPH Flames and NIP tally victories in IEM Katowice Play-In openers
IEM Katowice is officially under way with the first three matches of the play-in in the books.
The first three best-of-one openers at the IEM Katowice Play-In are under wraps with Ninjas in Pyjamas, Copenhagen Flames and MOUZ advancing through the upper bracket, now just one best-of-three away from securing a spot at the main event.
Out of the opening victors, Ninjas in Pyjamas and Copenhagen Flames will face each other for one of the coveted spots at IEM Katowice proper, while MOUZ will wait for a rival after the next round of play, which will be the winner of FaZe vs. Sprout. The three first round losers, Wisla Krakow, fnatic and GODSENT are now one match away from elimination, with the former two teams set to face each other.
MOUZ was powered by their two academy stars in the early stages of the match against GODSENT, with the recently promoted Ádám "torzsi" Torzsás and stand-in Jon "JDC" de Castro — playing in lieu of Aurimas "Bymas" Pipiras — taking point on Nuke’s CT side, while on the attack only Bruno "latto" Rebelatto and Eduardo "dumau" Wolkmer offered some resistance to no avail. A 12-3 half and a second pistol round won put the European combine in the driver’s seat, bringing a short GODSENT revival to an end, 16-8.
The other high-caliber match in the opening trio pitted fnatic with the hot and cold Copenhagen Flames on Ancient, with the Danes taking full advantage of starting on the CT side as Nico "nicoodoz" Tamjidi and Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard put up numbers early on to get their team in the lead, but a strong finish in the half by the British-Swedish side got them within one at the switch. The Danes extended their lead early on the attack and took charge as fnatic failed to put a single round on the board in the second half.
Wisla Krakow, the hometown representatives, had the task of facing off against Ninjas in Pyjamas in their opener showing early signs of weakness on Ancient as Ninjas in Pyjamas took an early 5-2 lead on the attack, although the Poles turned things around to remain competitive and even took the lead at the half, 8-7, before extending it in the first three rounds of the second half. Despite being up 11-7, Grzegorz "SZPERO" Dziamałek and company weren’t able to find cracks in the defense as the Swedish squad went on to tally their first victory at the Play-In.
