PGL Major Europe RMR groups confirmed

The 32 teams participating in the two European RMR tournaments now know their fate.

PGL have confirmed the distribution of the 32 teams who will take part in the Regional Major Ranking tournaments, which will award eight spots each at PGL Major Antwerp.

The distribution was finalized following the conclusion of the fourth open qualifier, which saw GamerLegion, fnatic, Eternal Fire, Sangal, and Anonymo squeeze their way in at the last minute, leaving the likes of Apeks and SKADE without a spot and without a chance to qualify for the upcoming Major.

fnatic have been placed in Europe A to fight against the likes of NAVI for a spot at the next Major

The 32 teams were seeded based on their performance at the last Major and in the qualifiers.

At first glance, the "A" tournament headlined by Stockholm champions Natus Vincere looks like the more stacked of the two. It features 10 of the top 20 teams in the world, compared to 7 in the "B" counterpart, where G2 sit at the top as the Major runners-up.

The two events will take place consecutively on LAN in Bucharest, Romania, on April 17-20 and April 21-24. They will run in a Swiss format, with "A" awarding four Legends, two Challengers, and two Contenders spots in Antwerp, while "B" will see the top-three teams secure Legends status, followed by four Challengers and one Contender.

Not to diminish their results, but invites so early on only mean that they have players that bring in viewers. They're a good team, but they actually got an easy way thanks to invites while others have to grind their asses off for years for such opportunity.

They are officially called "groups" by Valve. The word groups exists outside of tournament formats and doesn't exclusively refer to a specific type of tournament structure, so yes they are groups of teams. Just like any collection of teams is a group.

It makes sense that group A is more stacked than group B given the distribution of slots. While both groups award 8 spots at the major, group A awards 4 legend spots while group B "only" 3. But I think that it would have been fairer to have balanced groups and e.g. top3 teams of every group get legend spots and the 4th best teams of both groups fight each other for the last legend spot.
